      I was talking to a friend about sustainability and how we cannot have energy efficiency without fossil fuels. We said we must find a way to obtain the amount of energy a combustion reaction makes without producing carbon dioxide. Then we started to go into using cold fusion, explosions, natural disasters, and anything else that can create so much energy so quickly. After that, we started brainstorming ways we could store that energy and use it. Ultimately, without carbon dioxide emission, our planet would be saved 😂. There’s so much more but I’d be here forever typing.

    I would also add that one of the awesome things is that through engineering, physics and math majors you get incredible grit. The workload is usually insane and difficult, you will have to fight through witch blood seat and tears to cone out on top with good results, which means that difficult parts of life are easier to handle, like you said, we are all suffering together!
    Not only that, but I am getting better and better at digesting a ton of information in a short amount of time, handling very stressful situations and I learned to embrace seemingly impossible problems that I face.

    I’ve been a mechanical engineer for 12 years. And I can say that it is very rewarding when there’s work. You get to tackle a lot of really interesting problems. You develop a very keen logical sense outside of your job in every day life.
    The drawback I found in engineering is that it can be volatile depending on the industry your in and that could lead to a lot of job switches sometimes and which can be difficult when you are rooted down.
    All in all, I still love engineering. Gives me a rewarding feeling when I solve a complex problem.

    A good video. I am a retired civil engineer. I have known since age 12 that I would be an engineer. Engineering work was fun and interesting. From a year as an Army combat engineer to 10 years as a town engineer shared between 12 small towns I gained a wide breadth of experience. In the 1990s, I gave back to my old university by mentoring senior design projects in bridge design.
    As I've listened to you, I think that you were logical to begin with. Engineering just brought it out. Enjoy your career. Good Luck, Rick

      Flip a coin and see how you feel when the answer is shown. Are you disappointed or relieved? That always helped me clarify how I REALLY felt about something when deciding between two things. Definitely go with the option that excites you most / feels more right.

    Thank you for making this video! I can tell that you are *very* intelligent. Thanks to you, I feel encouraged to study engineering because it is nice to see other females studying it, I love Maths and my dad is a mechanical engineer and my granddad was a engineer during World War Two too. The reason why I want to study engineering is because you get to learn about other interesting things such as thermodynamics; I also used to love chemistry but never studied it at A Level.
    Please can you make a video about how to choose which field of engineering to go into if you haven't already? I thought you did but I can't find it haha. Love your videos! Might show some of them to my dad. My dad really likes Maths xx
    I am from the UK by the way :)

    Yo, the argument about passing notes between each other is some real bullshit sometimes. There are people that only want to get from you but don't give anything in return ever. If you refuse to give them notes, you are said to be "bad colleague" when in real life you just simply value your work too much to feed the parasite in your class for their pleasure of being lazy.

    • @RiverTechJess
      @RiverTechJess  Před 6 lety +20

      Honestly, there was this one guy in my class that skipped every lecture and asked me for notes. I gave them to him because I like to give people the benefit of the doubt. But then he continued to not attend school and asked me for my notes again and I said no. I agree with you in that sense, I value my work so much and I’m not just going to hand it over for free

      You are amazing, totally get everything you are about, WIE are the best 😇!!! Engineering brings us confidence, skepticism, and humility because like said, there is always someone smarter on the room you can learn from. I think everyone should just get an engineering degree and then if they want to do something else like business or psychology, get a graduate degree. I ABSOLUTELY believe it should be a requirement of our politicians, we need educated problem solvers to lead the world. I would love to see you as the next President!!!

      honestly, after you get past all the math classes (and maybe some engineering classes) there isn't THAT much math. Some parts of engineering have more math than others so you can definitely find a stream of engineering without math. "Usage: Education, properly a drawing forth, implies not so much the communication of knowledge as the discipline of the intellect, the establishment of the principles, and the regulation of the heart."
    You must discipline your thinking to work through the problem. You must use the principles to solve the problem. You must control your emotions to solve the problem. And you must develops "cognitive endurance" or the ability to work for significant periods on solving the problem.

Cool thing about engineering is that it offers many career trajectories once you start work ... technical, mngt, business, sales, marketing, finance, projects, manufacturing, operations, maintenance, reliability, education, medical, legal, etc.

    Hello! What kinds of paths can you take with mechanical engineering? I'm thinking about engineering and you mentioned a couple in your video, but what are some more examples? You also said there are types of engineering that are not as heavy in math, and I would love to know what those are! I think I'm pretty set on mechanical, but would love to hear your advice! Thank you so much for the AWESOME vid!!

    • @RiverTechJess
      @RiverTechJess  Před 6 lety

      Hey Sarah! Thanks so much for watching. Honestly, there are so many disciplines and they overlap with other branches of engineering also. I think the best thing to do would be to look up the univeristy you want to apply to and check what sort of research the professors in the mechanical department do. Their research area is a path you can take. But just to throw a few more out there: structures (aircraft of anything else), mechatronics, biomed, laminar or turbulent or subsonic or supersonic or hypersonic or any type of flow, combustion, heat transfer/HVAC, etc.
