Mk4 golf gearbox upgrade conversion

- Sdi to tdi gearbox. You will need everything thats shown in video. Its not mutch more difficult than changing a clutch, the gear lever kit is straight forward to change, only 4 bolts holds gear lever housing to floor of car, 2 bolts are accessible from inside car an 2 bolts from underside of car, you will need a 8mm sline bit or sline key for driveshafts an if you don't a clutch centre tool, you may try long 3/8 sockets as the centre of clucth is equal to center of guide in flywheel an easy to align. Oh nearly forgot, revering light switch connect ok but the speed sensor cable was too short for this gearbox an had to be extended, i used heat shrink butt joints as they seal better from damp. any questions please ask.

Lovely ambitious project, I always stick to rear wheel drive, but nice to see the complications of a front wheel box. Good luck

Hi, I have a mk4 1.9 axr 5 Speeds
I want to change with one in 6 speeds, does the one on the ARL fit?
WHAT PARTS DO I TOTALLY NEED TO COMPLETE THE PROCEDURE? THANKS

Hi, nice job! Can you please share 02j gearbox code ? Did all the screws connecting the gearbox to the engine fit without problems ? I can see that 02k gearbox has more holes in flange that is facing the engine. I am planning to do the same to 1.6 16v AZD petrol...
Can't remember code on gearbox, yes it did align up ok.
Can you advise for the transmission code please? I will try do the swap for a TDI box on my 14.16v car but i dont know which transmission is suitable for my car.
@@marioschouriettis1111 No good news, sorry! I tried to check it with local VW gurus and it seems that 02j gearbox from the movie will not fit 1.4/1.6 16V engines. It is because those are "small" block engines and have different holes/bolts comparing to 1.9 SDI and 1.6 8V (those are "big" block). They say that 02k gearbox is so "special" that it has holes for both big and small block engines. 02j gearbox does not have it. So I stared to look for 1.6FSI gearbox (FYK and GSD) but in my area cost of all parts required for FSI setup is similar to rebult 02k gearbox :/ Please correct me if I am wrong!
Ah think the 02m box is a bit stronger though.

No it's different an clutch cylinder set up is different.

hiya fella! quick one... have you ever done a rod to cable conversion? i have a 1.6 MK4 Golf and the rod system drives me up the friggin wall!!! lol Cable is far smoother in my view, but how simple would that be to do, would you suggest? :-)
Steve Griz Adams hi havn't a rod to cable conversion on the orginal gear box, have bought an complete orginal likage kit about 8 years ago for the gear box your talking about, was around £50 then but im sure its a lot more now,

Is it a 6 speed or 5 speed, any ideas on which engine the tdi box came off ?

Hello,i did the same thing on my '98 octavia 1.6 74kw petrol and now my speedo reads about 20 km/h slower than before according to gps...did you had the same problem?
Yes have the same issue with speedo, approximately 10 or 12 km slower. Did some research an would need access to a full vag.com computer to re calibrate speedo.
What I did to try to compensate the speed difference was to remove speedo from dash an pull it from outer skin. I removed the speed dial from clock an slipped it back on about 10 km forward, it's only a push fit an a plastic fork can help as a lever to remove the dial needle. Just be careful not to push the dial on too tight, as it will stick against the rear of clocks an will not function properly.
@@TheProjectGuy194 i have vag-com and i try to recode instrument cluster but didn't succed cause i only could find coding for '00> and my car is '98...and when you reposition speedometer needle,does it come back to 0 vhen you're not moving?and that doesn't solve false reading on odometer...
@@otacdjeteta6126 yes your right, needle doesn't go to zero when stopped, my idea if putting the clock forward is only a compromise to re calibrating the speedo.. if you find a solution to this, please let me know as I'm interested.

@@Vuleta_1.8t those 16v engines are mounted leaning to the front of the car ,1.6 8v 100hp,1.8 20v,2.0 8v and diesel engines are mounted leaning to the back of the car so you can't use gearboxes from them,if your gear lever has some free play then change bushings on gear selector mechanism on gearbox,there's nothing else you can do about it.

Heyy!! 😁😁 I drive a vw bora 1.9 tdi 90 ps 2000 years ... at 3000 rpm 140 kmh goes in 5 speeds ... the question is which gear is the longest and to fit in my car does not matter 5 or 6 speeds ... I drive a lot on the highway at 3000 km per month
5 speed from a later 130 pd bora should lower your rpm by 5 to 10 percent, if you get a drive in one of these first before upgrading to see the ram difference..
Does a 1.6 petrol engine work on a golf 4 1.4
It could be a lot of work.
Ecu would be different an you would need the gearbox to suit the 1.6. The ecu would be the biggest challenge.
