  • I ran the 2022 Chicago Marathon, so many of these tips are based off of mistakes I made. Traveling from out of state, having never been to Chicago, some of these tips are things I found helpful when running the Chicago Marathon. #run

    The Chicago Marathon was my second ever marathon. I have run a total 4 marathons and it is easily my favorite. I am excited to watch my fellow runners go for a PR or PB and I hope this video is helpful.

    Being from Chicago and having run the race twice (number 3 next month!) I can wholeheartedly agree with these. The Kofuzi video us helpful as well. It's a really well-run and special event, but with so many people it requires a lot of planning and forethought. Good luck to anyone running it this year!

    Ive done Chicago twice and will be there again next week my top tips are study the map , Chicago has over 20 turns and if your on the wrong side of the wide streets during them your gonna run a half mile longer over time.. Also the roads are not flat if your running on the side of a street which is often slanted for water run off your gonna have a hip issue, try to run in the middle of them except when cutting a corner..

    Thanks Andrew. I don't use a Garmin, but for me the best tip you mentioned was being aware of the fact the finish line is actually further than it seems near the end. I once heard someone on the running stage at the expo say that people get the idea that because it is mostly a straight up run to the finish starting from the turn onto michigan avenue near the end, people unconciously are tricked into thinking they are almost finished, even with all the signs. Fact is, there is still a long way to go.
    One other thing: Chicago has fickle weather, from years when, I am told, the Gatorade froze, to the 2007 scorcher, and 2021 was pretty hot. If you end up in really hot weather, lower your expectations accordingly. People in 2021 were dropping out in fairly significant numbers because, I believe, they did not change their expectations.
    Thanks again, and best in your running.

      @MidLifeRunner that was exactly my thoughts,coming from the UK I'd already spent loads so what's another 150,plus I probably drunk close to that in Goose Island after the race 🤣

      Luckily I qualified for the Abbott Wanda Age Group business there which has its own tent and lots of amenities. Still had to add a fee for it but I didn’t hesitate!

    I’m not even sure my simple, years-old but faithful Garmin 35 has manual lap. But I should remember to turn off auto pause because I never remember that and it always prevents me from knowing how much time I’ve lost if I come to a stop at any aid stations or for whatever reason,

    Tip #9:
    Not an original, and not specific to CHI, but valuable for every marathon…and one I failed to follow and paid the price (7 minutes unscheduled pit stop at mile 10).
    Do NOT eat novel food the night before…and avoid fats/grease. Stick to your usual food you would have eaten at home the day before your long runs.

    • @MidLifeRunner
      @MidLifeRunner  Před 11 měsíci

      Thanks for sharing! With so much novelty food in Chicago, I think it does apply

    Any suggestions for us Apple Watch wearers?? Should I just use a stopwatch? The gps thing is making me panic slightly haha

    • @MidLifeRunner
      @MidLifeRunner  Před 11 měsíci

      That’s a great question. My wife and kofuzi are the only two people I know who use the Apple Watch. And he uses it for music . Maybe you could break it up to 5ks if that’s not long of a stretch. I would get notifications to my watch and it would give me the chip time. Some people write their goal splits on their arms for 5k, 10k, 15k etc 🤷🏻‍♂️

      @Adensity75 Před 10 měsíci +1

      I ran the Chicago Marathon in 2022 with an Apple Watch Series 6, and to my amazement, I didn't encounter any GPS issues at the start. The distance markers on the course were pretty much in line with what my watch was showing. Good luck!

  • @G_Liwag
    @G_Liwag Před 10 měsíci

    Stupid question, but whats the difference between auto lap and manual lap?

    • @MidLifeRunner
      @MidLifeRunner  Před 10 měsíci +2

      No stupid questions. Auto lap, usually set to 1 mile, will tell you the mile time automatically as you run a mile. In Chicago, the gps thinks you run a mile when you have run .92 or so, so the mile split is off . Manual lap means nothing will go off (no beep) at any point, but you can push the bottom button on right side (for garmin) and it will lap it at that point. So, I’m Chicago, you can wait until you cross Mile Marker 1 and then press manual lap to get your real mile time
