I feel sorry for those who missed ‘Border’ (2018). I caught it on the leaving soon queue in March, and boy…I was blown away. Do yourself a favor, don’t read the reviews, and watch it (somehow). 👍
HBO Max soon to be Max, as it will start to include Discovery + content. (Allegedly 😅).

Frailty is a great old school movie
Dude, "The Menu" is so good, excellent cast, truly strange but not grotesquely so, it's da BOMB! And "After Hours" is truly fun, in that 80's club/dating scene kind of way. Less horror as the "comedy of smart errors" kind of thing. I've not seen "Barbariamn" or several of the first 8 and REALLY appreciate how you deliver the hidden gems in many categories. Kudos!
Excellent FLICK CONNECTION, Darren. Love your high ranking of the original Papillon. Far superior than the re-make. Many thanks for sharing with us 👍👍👍
I was literally just searching this very topic. Thanks for the upload.!
Always coming in clutch with the recommendations man I appreciate it. I'm gonna have to check out Dead Ringers.
I saw Natural Born Killers in the theatre in 94 and I had to sit silent in my car for like 20 minutes afterward. I honestly did not feel safe to drive for a while. And the soundtrack is one of my favorite soundtracks of all time.
When i first saw it, it was a vhs rental from blockbuster... It was the first and only time that as soon as the movie ended, i immediately rewinded it and watched it over again. 🤯
I didn't know the great Bill Paxton directed Frailty.
He listed all the movies. That earned a sub. I don't know why other channels don't do that but I appreciate it.
“Frailty” is an excellent movie.
Loved "Red" so glad that you mentioned it and yes "The Menu" could have went a little farther but I thought it was entertaining . Everyone needs to see "Frailty" , I thought it was very good, just wished Bill hadn't passed so soon he had so much to give .
Papillon was a phenomenal movie that never should have been remade. The remake isn’t horrible by itself but it’s pointless if you’ve seen the original.
I agree. The remake is fine but completely unnecessary.
I don't agree - Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) is one of my favorite actors and did a tremendous job. Nothing wrong with enjoying both renditions to a fantastic film.
Agreed
@@US_Joe I apologize for taking so long to reply here. Charlie Hunnam and Rami Malek were indeed great. They did their best and deserve commendation. It’s just that the narrative feels repetitive, especially to some of us who have seen the first Papillon. But if you like it, that’s great.
@@waverlyking6045 Thanx - This incredible story can never go wrong. Seeing it portrayed by a great actor such as Hunnam was a delight. Regards my friend
Up to this point I never realized that my favorite genre was "f****d up movies". Thanks for the clarity. Ps: So glad you mentioned "Citizen X". . The years of agony that poor man went through! By the end it just tore me up. I cried right along with him. It is a "must watch". Another twisted movie was Tom Tryon's "The Other". Gave me nightmares.
👍👍🤣funnie
The Other was a masterpiece. Love the book also. A very underrated film.
I'm not super into weird movies, but Citizen X is a really really stellar movie and vastly underrated. The Shining is an inspired choice too, especially if you've read the book too.
👍
Saved this to check out for a rainy day-literally. Thanks Darren!
Thank you for this video!
Papillon is in my top 5 movies of all time - the book is fantastic too
One of my dad’s favorite as well and he loved the book!
Please keep doing these videos.
Amazing
Watched "The Menu" in theater, we loved it! Great recommendations as always, a few more for our list.
If you like deep dives maybe watch the interviews with cast and director and then watch it again. This cast had such an amazing time making this movie that feels like a play to me.
Another great list. And Frailty was seriously messed up, but Bill Paxton was awesome in it, just like everything else he did.
Saw 'Man Bites Dog' in 1993 and holy shit...
Oh yes. Good to see it's getting some love
Citizen X is one of the best movies that has ever been made for TV. Seriously the acting in it is brilliant.
Thanx for picking this topic. Great hidden gems I never was aware of! Can't wait to start watching! 👍👍👍👍👍💫💫💫💫💫💥
Wow! Thanks for a fantastic, long list of great movies!
Loved The Card Counter.
Great list. Just added a bunch to my queue
Your list is amazing. Man bites dog and funny games really messed me up. Frailty is an absolute favourite because I rented it on VHS and didn't expect it to be that good.
I subbed your channel as soon as I discovered it. Outstanding. I've watched many of the movies you have mentioned on Amazon and you have been dead on. Great stuff. No longer signed up with HBO but I'm sure it's dead on as well.
I might like F'ed up flicks. Blue Velvet is one of my faves but I tend to watch Lost Highway a bit more, slight edge but I agree in Velvet being a bit more accessible while still being a WTF type of flick.
Great picks! Had almost all these movies
I Escaped Devil's Island with Jim Brown is similar to Papillon and Citizen X reminds me of Child 44 with Tom Hardy
Great recommendations! I can watch The Menu multiple times. The humor is subtle unlike current films that have cringy, goofy humor.
In regards to the Menu, I see Anya Taylor Joy is in this.
I really want to like her, but she's like Taylor Swift......one day, there wasn't Talor Swift or Any Joy, and then the next day they were everywhere. And neither of them feel like real human beings. It seems like they were created in a lab or something.
The only movie Anya seemed even remotely human in was the Witch.
Thank you!
Thank you!!! I love frailty.
Man bites dog is wild. A really good mockumentary that is very underrated.
I love the f*#*!@ up videos. There is not a lot of videos in your channel about movies in the streaming platform Shudder, which is a shame. Would love to see more videos with movies in Shudder.
God bless shudder!! Easily my favorite streamer
Darren, your black t-shirt looks dope.
If you had any kind of abuse in your life, I personally recommend you not watch The Accused. It still occasionally haunts me to this day! I watched it once when it first came to television. I was approximately 30 years old. I am 57 now. I still get chills and PTSD-like thoughts when the topic of Jodie Foster comes up or that movie comes up or anything surrounding that type of topic comes up et cetera. I was a victim of child abuse so it probably stems from that.
The Accused goes so much deeper than just the event. So many twists and turns. Amazing commentary on what women go through just to be believed.
Christopher Guest’s cameo in After Hours is worth the whole movie, which terrific.
Thank You *SO* Much for mentioning White God. Honestly One of the BEST Under the Radar Films (that [Unfortunately, Seemingly] "Nobody" has ever heard of; I've Ever Scene. 👏👏
. ... ..
I'd also like to give a shout out to Paul Thomas Anderson and his Transcendental TheMaster, streaming on this platform at present. Along with one, How I Live Now.. . In addition to White Bird In A Blizzard,.
All Three of which.. . Absolutely Incredible, Exquisite.. If Not Transcendental. Each, in their own Unique Beautifully Poignant Nuanced and Autonomous Way. 🎨🎨🎨
Saw "Red" some years ago and loved it. Hated the death of the dog, but Darren is right, it's a small movie but gripping
I loved the Menu. So so good!
These are my favorite kind of movies!!! Now I have 10 new movies to watch ❤ Thanks Darren!!! 😊
Darren, you’re the goat
BTW you ROCK!! love your soul dude!
OOPS! sorry just saw the list!
I loved “After Hours” when it came out. Glad it’s on this list!
"You'll eat less than you desire and more than you deserve". The Menue
I loved Papallion & one movie I put on the watch list with Papallion is King Rat. Love Misery as most stepen King movies. Natural born killers is one of my favorites.
Love your picks.
Thanks you for doing the lord's work!
Loved Citizen X! Watched it based off a recommendation from another Flick Connection video
If dubstep was a movie- it’d be spring breakers.
Frailty is one of my favorite films. Totally underrated
You shocked us, Flick!!!
Dude- so unlike your editing prowess: You put up the “White God” superscript during Misery (#2)
I love After Hours. I went to see it in the theater when it came out. Gonna go watch it.
Spring Breakers and Man Bites Dog are amazing.
thanks
Darren where do you buy your black shirts?
Man bite dogs is great! Hilarious 😂
and I'm thoroughly surprised you showed Citizen X... what a superb movie...I cant believe this flick hasnt gotten a mainstream audience....best serial killer movie!
I saw citizen x that 90s year and it was amazing. I still believe it is one the best serial killer movie ever.
Ralph Fines was incredible, as he always is. Yes she did a great job too, and they both made this movie absolutely amazing.
You actually labeled Misery as White God but thank you so much for your videos !! This list is awesome, can’t wait to watch the ones I’m not familiar with
Yeah, I noticed that too.
Frailty is such a great flick
If 'Dead Ringers' isn't one of your favorite Cronenberg films, it should be. Seriously--it's incredible.
22:07 Mixed up yer graphics there, Flick Connection. You have Misery labeled as White God.
...whoopsie!
The no.1 pick also a good watch while waiting for the next Yellowjackets episode to drop.
I know we talking about HBOMAX , BUT PRIME JUST brought Terrifier 2 Unrated version , saw it in Theater & thats the master of F*****KED movie to the teeth & F*N LOVED IT👌✌👍
I actually likes the first one more
@@RemingtonSteel
loved both & CANT wait for 3rd one is coming
No matter how hard the will try, I just can't accept or take seriously Art the clown.
He'll never be Michael Myers or Jason.
The Menu is an anticiv movie with Ralph Finnes being the product of civ and each customer at the restaurant representing the issues civ creates.
I believe Requiem for a Dream is on Max is it not? Thought that would’ve made this list
I love this list 😁
HBO Max knows when you use a vpn and doesn't play the content
I would give almost anything to see the Tim Burton version of After Hours. It just lends itself to his style so well. It actually kinda passes me off that Scorsese got it after T.B. was already attached.
I prefer the original funny games, mostly because I don’t recognize any of the actors in it. So, I think it makes it feel even more realistic and horrifying, almost like you’re watching a documentary. Also, frailty…. I only rewatch a very select few movies, and this is one of them. It’s great.
Darren, for the last few days when I launch one of your videos from a notification, I am forced to watch an ad (which is a normal occurrence), but when I press the "Skip Ads" option, an annoying white "Ad Preference" section covers up half of my screen, and I cannot close it by simply pressing the X in the top right corner of the screen. This does not seem to happen when I select other notification links for other subscribed CZcams channels. Is this happening to all of your CZcams channel subscribers that do not pay CZcams to be "ad free"? If I exit CZcams then locate and launch the same video, the "half screen block" is gone. How come I don't get this annoying "half screen block" when I watch other CZcams channels? If this is something that I will constantly have to deal with on your channel, I'm afraid I will just have to unsubscribe. Please advise.
After Hours is one of my all time favourites movies.
Love this !!!!
Dead ringers was very good! It puts me in the thought of the movie Boxing Helena & cant find Boxing Helena. The Menu was VERY intertaining..
Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer is severely effed up, terrifying with no letup or reason it takes you out on a limb and leaves you there.
Citizen X is heartbreaking knowing it's a true story.
24:32 Nice work. Some of these movies I will never watch. Odd. Thank you for your blood sweat and tears. Goodnight.
After Hours at the top of my list (since that’s my fav year ever)! And luvs my Cyberghost
Funny story about Natural Born Killers. QT wrote True Romance and NBK. He sold True Romance to Tony Scott and QT took the writing credit. He sold NBK to Oliver Stone who changed the script so much QT only took a story by credit and not a writing credit.
Glad to know this.
I really enjoyed True Romance and I despise Natural Born Killers, yet I like all of QT's work.
I guess it stands to reason why I wouldn't like NKB since Oliver Stone messed it up.
I just watched Natural Born Killers on HBO! I forgot how good it was. Great list!
The Experimenter is based on a true story. That is a true experiment that occurred. It tells you a lot about the human species. The Accused is an excellent movie. The Menu is very different than what I've seen before, and I thought it was excellent. Frailty was well acted with Bill Paxton, but quite a bit disturbing. Misery was Kathy Bate's debut, and her Oscar was well deserved. The Shining is always awesome, although it strays far away from the novel. The remake gives the novel more justice, but the original was scarier.
Are any of these on Amazon Prime?
RED has mickey from Shameless and Hassel from The Outsiders. Very cool. Imma check it out.
Citizen X ,movie about Chikatilo, serial killer from Rostov, is amazing.....
Regarding Dead Ringers ~ Rachel Weisz is not in this movie, that's actually Genevieve Bujold. Excellent list though dude, thanks! 😊
He was referring to the Dead Ringers the series that’s getting released later this month. That has Rachel Weisz in it.
I actually just came across Barbarian and really enjoyed it!
Based on an actual event, The Experimenter. A real experiment actually took place there. It provides many interesting insights about the human race. A great movie, The Accused. I found the Menu to be wonderful despite being completely different from what I've seen before. Bill Paxton did a great job acting in the unsettling movie Frailty. Kathy Bate made her film debut with Misery, and she thoroughly deserved her Oscar. Despite departing greatly from the book, The Shining is always fantastic. Though the original was more frightful, the remake does the book's justice.
Does anyone know the name of the song that's playing in the background at the start of the video?
John Landis directed After Hours
Cheers. Thanks for your research and reviews, Synecdoche, New York 2008 (Dir: Charlie Kaufman) is a weird one too.
Watched "Red" yesterday. Really good movie. Thanks for the recommendation.
Red was the only one on this list that I care to check out.
I've either seen the others or don't care too, but Red looks interesting.
Ahhh.. The Thst Circus, this movie is AMAZING!! It's surreal and realistic at the same time, really damn good. I used to play movies like this at work, and this one drew a crowd.
I need more movies like Barbarian!
Yo! I found Funny Games absolutely terrifying!!! I still can’t watch Michael Pitt in anything without getting creeped out! For real! Disturbing af! I LOVED the Menu! The Accused is one of my all time favorite Jody Foster movies. Surprised to see Dead Ringers still around after all these years. But it does make sense if they’re making a series out of it. Jeremy Irons owned those roles. Frailty was really good. It surprised me.
I finally saw Donnie Darko. I was waiting to see this show up on this list but, alas..... Spring Breakers.
Not even Boogie Nights, although maybe not weird enough.
Really enjoyed The Menu tho crazy.
Bro, your hair looks like Cameron Diaz’s did in Something About Mary. Normally it’s on point.
I’m so glad you said that James Franco was playing a role “second to most interesting” and mentioned Tommy Wiseau! I had so much new found respect for Franco after the Disaster Artist. To the point where I had to keep reminding myself that it wasn’t a like ‘Making Of’ documentary The Room itself. Sometimes I think stereotypically handsome actors tend to surprise viewers more than an actor who isn’t because even I seem to typecast them as ‘just a pretty face’. The best example I can think of is Tom Hardy. I think he played Bronson and the Krays exceptionally and I was ignorantly surprised both times!
I’m also thrilled that Blue Velvet was on here but I xx said some very colorful words when I saw your number one 😂 Look, I’m a Tarantino loyalist, so I have to hate it! I do love both Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis though. Thanks for the awesome video!
Ps. Btw I only just discovered your channel and I’m about to do some serious binging! You’re really easy to listen to and I love how you clearly know what you’re talking about without sounding like a movie snob, ya know? Anyway! Stay gold, Pony Boy! 🤘
