Just picked one up and am so far quite impressed by it. I’m an old-school home power nut, having installed my first solar panels at age 13 in 1995. Back then, solar had just broken the $5/watt barrier and it was a big deal. I’ve had 600 watts worth of solar on my roof for the past ten years, but no actual system - just “guerrilla solar” utility intertie with the individual panel-mount intertie inverters plugged into an outlet in my shop. So they just offset my usage, but never actually “sell” back to the grid. It’s enough to knock about $15-20 off my bill every month. These are the same panels I saved up for and bought back in 1995, and their outputs have only decreased by an average of 8%. Pretty darn good.
So I’ve been thinking about getting back into an actual solar home system, mainly for energy use offset and also for backup during outages in the winter (it gets very cold here). The electricals on my boiler pull a constant 166 watts when running, which is my only real concern other than phone and flashlight charging.
I’ve been looking at these “portable power stations” (of various brands) over the past few years, wondering if they’re actually any good. After seeing a few reviews, I decided to go for the one featured in this video, as it was on sale for $499. I pulled two of my older frameless 100 watt solar panels out of storage to dedicate to charging the unit, and terminated the wire run in my basement with a fuse and a disconnect since that’s where the River will live in the winter. Temps down there average 58f over the cold season so it should do fine. With the boiler averaging 20 minutes of runtime per hour at 0°f, I should be able to get a solid 10-12 hours out of the River…and that’s only if I don’t make any changes to our heating strategy (which we will in the case of an outage - lower set temp, which means the boiler won’t operate for the first 6 hours due to the thermal mass of our home).
In the end, this unit is perfect for dipping my toe back into the home power stuff - no batteries to lug around and maintain, no space taken up by inverters and cabling and disconnects, and easy enough for my kids to just turn it on, plug in the boiler, and it’s good to go. Perhaps someday I’ll step up to a multi-kilowatt version with the extra battery capacity and switch a few rooms of the house over to full-time solar power, then eventually the whole house. I really like the idea of these self-contained units, and the anxiety I felt over the Li-Ion chemistry’s relatively short life cycle rating has now been cured with the switch to LiFePo cells.
All in all, I’m extremely happy with the River 2 Pro…looking forward to expanding my system in the future!

You do a better job of explaining ex-boost than most of the reviewers. But I think all reviewers need to make it crystal clear that you cannot use x boost with a refrigerator or you will damage it. The low voltage can cause the compressor to seriously overheat.

Anyway, how do you think it would fare powering a power supply for a ham radio in the field, said radio putting out 100W max at around 21A for transmission. Thanks. (Edit: I DID leave said comment but on one of your Bluetti reviews. Doesn't matter too much now though because in large part thanks to you video here I just ordered a River 2 Pro, so here's hoping it can do what I want it to, as well as not crweate too much RFI. Hi, it was in a different video thread. I’m not sure if this one will support your HAM radio setup. Do you know the actual power draw of the transmitter? Is it 100W at 21A? If so, you’ll need something with a 30A 12v outlet unless you can run it off of AC power.

@Off Grid Adventure When it first arrived, my concerns were:
      - When it said it was 100% charged, it took an additional 30 minutes to stop charging.
      - After discharging to 97%, the unit said I had 14.7 hours left at a usage rate of 30 watts - That is a capacity of 441 hours, not even close to the advertised 614wh.
-When charging with the power brick, the bottom right corner always indicated 999 hours to finish charging.
      After about two weeks:
      - With DC and AC outlets both turned OFF - nothing using power at all - the fan suddenly started running and wouldn't stop. It wasn't receiving any solar input. Attempted to trouble shoot - unplugged everything even though the outlets were off, nothing changed. Turning DC out *ON* did turn the fan off. Still trying to trouble shoot, I turned DC out back OFF again and the fan went back on. Again, not using any power, not receiving any power, and it was 60ish degrees so the unit was definitely not hot. Disconnecting the solar input cord did stop the fan from running.
Last issue that made me return it - I was running a USB lightbulb and when I plugged in my tablet to charge, the lightbulb went off. Unplugged the bulb and plugged it back in - it worked for a split second, then stopped working again. I plugged the bulb into a different unit, and it worked fine. When I put it back into the Pecron, it again stopped working and also ... my tablet made a sound like it had JUST been plugged in despite not touching that plug - and it's USB C vs bulb type A. Same thing kept happening.

I haven’t tried it yet. But, I’ve had some success with other Pecron devices recently. So, I’m sure it works great.

Man I'm torn right now. I've been buying ecoflow since last year. I was about to pull the trigger on the pecron e600 lfp then I see this river pro 2 on my yt feed lol. I need guidance!

@@DoritosResidue I feel like the EcoFlow is a little more refined. I have not tested the Pecron 600, but recently tested their lager device with good results. So, it’s a tough call. There are some deals on this River 2 Pro that bring the price down to $539. So, that’s an excellent deal.

@@OffGridAdventure a lot of factors play in to these two brands like warranty and price. I've have had no major issues with ecoflow. I already have the river pro w/expansion, river 2, river max 2. Shall I buy the pro and complete the river collection or should be logical for a great deal and go for pecron lol. I'm still torn!

My new ecoflow River 2 Pro does not display AC watt input. ecoflow customer service ignores all my emails. Anyone know why this is happening?
