  • Mario Kart Tour recently got a major update adding a whole new Battle Mode to the game and removing the vast majority of gacha elements from the game. I'm not the biggest fan of Tour, but did the new changes & updates make Tour a better experience?

I am not really having fun with Tour anymore. I cancelled my gold pass and I just play a lot less with the new updates. I actually like the Spotlight shop more than the gotcha system but the prices are still too high and I've noticed that I'm basically required to spend all my rubies to keep up in the ranked cup. Every week at least one course will give me no top shelf d/k/g's. I'm just burnt out and they aren't adding enough new content to be interested.

I suspected removing the paid lootboxes was probably a marketing tactic to get people who refused to play Tour due to its gacha mechanics, but i played anyway, and i gotta say, i should have thought twice before even playing Tour. Essentially, removing the paid lootboxes from the game is basically equivalent to pouring spoiled milk through a drainer back into a cup to remove the curds; the easiest to point out nasty elements are gone, but it's still rotten to the core.
I've been playing for about 6 weeks now, while attempting to ignore the pay to win mechanics, but even when playing casually, the game actively works against you. One thing i really don't like about Tour is the fact that all of the pseudo-online players (CPUs) start moving at the exact same time (which never happens with either CPUs or most real players in just about every proper Mario Kart), and it's complete luck as to if you'll survive what i like to call the "moshpit". Once you reach the first line of item boxes, everyone gets their items at the exact same time, and since they're close together and automatically hold items behind their karts, complete chaos ensues, and not in a good way whatsoever. Arguably the most annoying item is the Bob-Omb, and if a racer gets one, the entire moshpit will be nuked. If you're the one who had the Bob-Omb, you'll gain a ridiculous amount of points, if you're unfortunate to be within the moshpit, you will basically lose the race, as the item RNG in this game is incredibly broken (likely on purpose). When you try to bag in 8th place, you won't get beneficial items like stars, lightning, or bullet bills which will help you get 1st place AND get a good combo, but instead, 95% of the time you'll get mushrooms or mega mushrooms (both of which are completely worthless in this game). The way the game is set up at its core, even if you were to take out the gacha mechanics, lootboxes, microtransactions, grinding, etc., you still have a fundamentally broken and RNG-based game. I actually really like the idea of a score attack mode as a separate playstyle that could be selected in a console Mario Kart, but i don't want it to be programmed like ass and be the primary focus of the game.
What pisses me off to no end about Tour is the fact that it has a genuinely awesome character, kart, glider, and track roster, and that aside from a good chunk of the tracks, none of it is likely to be coming to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe did add several great characters such as Bowser Jr., King Boo, and the Inklings on launch, but they didn't completely remedy the filler and shit-tier character roster of Mario Kart 8 Wii U. 8 Deluxe is still missing fan favorite characters like Diddy Kong, Birdo, Funky Kong, etc., and could REALLY benefit from Tour's new characters such as Pauline, Nabbit, Kamek, Dixie Kong, and the like. The unfortunate part is it doesn't look like Nintendo is going to be bringing over any characters from Tour to 8 Deluxe (despite the fact that, aside from the bike animations and a few texture/model touch-ups here and there, character porting would be piss-easy by Nintendo's standards), and that might be part of their goal, as it seems that both the removal of paid pipes and the exclusitivity of actually good characters to Tour is Nintendo's plan to pull in players of 8 Deluxe and other Mario Kart games to finally break and play Tour. I know that technically characters don't really matter, and that too many characters would result in a cluttered selection screen, but i truly want 8 Deluxe to visually be a great and fun game with lots of variety, not a game where almost a quarter of the roster is clones and babies, and where the online meta is japanese Waluigi Wigglers as far as the eye can see. It doesn't help that because of Tour, like you, i have been becoming noticeably worse at 8 Deluxe, mainly because of the slow, on-rails, grindy, and predatory nature of Tour.
Mario Kart Tour is, however, addictive. The game doesn't actively guilt trip you to keep playing, instead, with the way it's set up, you subconciously go back to it time and time again.
Mario Kart Tour is like a drug: Playing as characters like Pauline and Funky Kong while racking up points brings me joy, but then i play an actually good Mario Kart game and i suffer withdrawl in seeing the shrunken roster and the gameplay that requires actual skill. My only way to rehab will be either character DLC for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, or Mario Kart 9 (which would be Mario Kart 10 according to Nintendo), both of which are unfortunately, equally unlikely.
Edit: So i turned out to be wrong on the character dlc part. Birdo is now in the game! Pauline and Diddy Kong aren't in yet but they may be holding on to them for Wave 6.

Your point about the rubie prices being mad expensive is how I feel about games with item shops nowadays. Games such as Fortnite, Apex Legends have item shops where you can spend real life money on their currency to get cosmetics directly, and while they do give you that option, the flip side is that they are unbelievably stingy when it comes to giving players who don't spend any money on those games that currency..making it feel almost forceful for people to cough up that bling regardless if there's lootboxs or not. I wish games would stop flocking to either extremes and start finding a balance between the two. Have a shop where people use premium currency to buy things directly so that they ALWAYS know what they're purchasing with their money, but at the same time don't neglect the part of your playerbase that can't or simply just doesn't want to spend money on your game either..it won't hurt Nintendo to be generous with handing out Rupies considering the amount of cosmetics in the game aswell as how much money they make in general. XD

I was sceptical when the September Update came in with the gacha pipe removal, the Spotlight Shop prices were expensive and the game felt kind of empty at first glance.
But as time went on, I seemed to like the changes, well not exactly but close enough. The MKT team can give us new retro tracks constantly, but not actually make new character alts (that isn’t Luigi).

I've literally not spent a single dime in MKT and got over 100 characters, tons of carts and gliders and literally have over 1million coins and over 2000 rubies. Yeah of course that takes time and depends on how much you play but for where i'm at right now in the game, I'm happy as can be and enjoy playing.
I honestly forget when I started I think in december 2019, and I was just excited to play a new Mario Kart game since playing MKDS. So seeing people calling it a scam or a ripoff even though it's a free game is kinda funny to see when you don't have to pay at all.

I’ve been playing Octopath Traveler Champions of the Continent as of late. It’s a gatcha at its core. They do reward every little thing, but you’ll run out of first time rewards eventually and if you want a chance to get all travelers and their specific side quests, you may have to spend some money, especially when it comes to limited release characters. For those rare limited release characters, you’ll need to spend $100 on rubies for a 50% at the character. What’s annoying is there’s this special line of upgrades for each character (which is how you obtain more skill slots) in which you could use an in game currency to obtain along with character specific stones, BUT when it comes to 5 star characters, the most rare rolls, you can only use character specific awakening stones which are only obtained by getting the character again in a reroll. That all said, it’s a decent game. You still get a story and it plays and looks just like the original. The class of character neither breaks the game or makes it feel play to win so strategy is still essential. My one complaint aside being a mobile gatcha (it could tie in with the amount of characters), is it kinda loses the original Bravely Default appeal. There’s no dual wielding classes (possibly part of the reason they introduced an 8 character at once system), character building, or the feeling you’re working toward something. Just making said character stronger.

At least they finally removed the gacha, but it was too late, the game’s reputation is still bad. At the time of writing this, a few weeks ago, Nintendo finally stopped adding new content to the game, and we could see the end of MKT in less than a year. Quite a disappointing game with its annoying grinding and it’s garbage bots that just combo and snipe you in impossible ways, or just drag their garbage item to hit you as they pass you. The only good thing about tour is some of the soundtracks/presentation in some courses like Vancouver Velocity, Sydney Sprint, Airship Fortress, etc. There are many cool reskins of characters like Rosalina Swimwear or Peach Vacation, Mario Sunshine, knight Luigi, Gold Egg Yoshi, and Gold King Boo; these are my favorites. I am definitely going to get into the booster course pass at some point and I can’t wait for MKT to shut down eventually. Nintendo straight up greedy it’s crazy with those character packs they have sold for real money when you could literally buy something of better value outside of MKT. This is a good point. Even after the contentious gacha has been removed, I still can't bear the evil and predatory mechanics it had until September 2022. This is arguably my worst game of all time and I can't bear the thought of how infuriating it is, hence the title. Never have I hated microtransactions more than ever. Glad the gacha was removed for good and can't wait for the whole game to go away forever for good. I simply can't take another minute with this notorious game. I'm sticking to the older games, sure they don't have a lot of content but they are properly playable and ownable, plus they don't have stupid gacha luck, also the content changes every two weeks, the tracks are different so playing one track is only in specific tours, which removes the fun of playing them. Why do that when MK8DX has fixed tracks you can revisit all you want? Tour is a disappointment in the series, its gacha is gone and the servers will go offline for good one day.

I agree 100% bud. Never in my life have I hated a game as much as Tour. The controls hurts my hands to no end, the timed tracks which is just stupid, and everything else is terrible and awful about it. Glad I don't have to worry about that with the other Mario Kart games, even 7.

@@ToadBradley24 Absolutely bud, Mario Kart Tour is my absolute worst game of all time and I simply cannot BEAR the thoughts of this game at all. I used to hate Mario Party on the 3DS, even Mario Party Advance and even Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels, but in 2019, nothing became worse than Tour and it has been so notorious since then. I hate everything about it to no end and it's so janky and awful. I'll happily revisit Super Mario Kart even if it's got only 8 drivers and 20 tracks, far better than a stupid gacha game with hundreds of paywalled items and gambling. Tour will inevitably go away for good one day.
