- Take a good close look at the new 4k Scan Release from James Cameron, True Lies. The 1994 Action / Comedy Thriller that has gotten quite a bit of hate for supposedly being over-processed and heavily altered from its original grain struction.
James Cameron used some new A.I. techniques to bring this classic back to life in a new way, and we take a closer look in a full review with side by side shots and video so you can be the judge.

Awesome review my friend! Very refreshing! It's nice to see this kind of perspective out there. We need more of it! I rewatched True Lies again last night, and I did notice more of the "smoothing" effect. But it's still better than anything we've had before with his film.
Thanks for the love and support as always brother! I definitely see “some” of it but overall…I think the damn thing looks good. WAY BETTER than anything else out there…
Maybe people are just a little afraid of “Skynet taking over….”
I mean I kinda am too lol 😂 but I’m not gonna hate on Cameron for it…I know “T2 irony at its finest.”
I saw True Lies in a theater in '94, and lemme tell ya, Tom Arnold's makeup looked pasty, caked on, even then in the 35mm print.
lol - hysterical! I guess even in “lower resolution” it couldn’t be hidden…no wonder he looks “waxy” in 4k 😉
I got all 3 movies and I'm glad I didn't listen to the haters. Picture quality is great, especially The Abyss and Aliens. It's true True Lies is the "worst" of the 3 but still the best the movie ever looked. 3 great movies and must have!
I really enjoyed true lies and just finished my review of Aliens. The Abyss is up next! Glad you’re enjoying them. I most certainly am as well. Thanks again for the comment and checking out the vid
Of course it does look pretty good, there are indeed some little waxy areas but it is not a catastrophy like T2 and there is grain, I really enjoyed this new transfer, even if it is not as beautiful as The Abyss or Aliens (yes, I loved the 4K transfer on this one as well), but the final result is quite enjoyable.
Thanks for the comment - I do know we all have “preferences” and “perspectives.” But I really did enjoy how this looked on my equipment. No matter how it got to this point or how it was done, I feel the end project what pretty damn good. Just a lot of “differing opinions” out there and that is fine.
We all like what we like 👍🏼
I cant wait to buy True Lies, Aliens and The Abyss in 4K. This picture does look sooo much better. There is no way Cameron could screw these movies up as much as Studio Canal screwed up T2
I think it looks great but as I learn about the process that was used I can understand why some are pissed. It was “shot on film” and they want it to retain that “film” look and not look like it was shot on digital. But hey…I’m just for make it look the best possible. And this definitely is the best this film has looked…
I agree! The only poor 4k transfer for a JC movie was T2. The rest look great in 4k!
That’s where I’m living at this point as well 😉
Considering the condition of the original camera negative from what I have heard, this release looks damn good. I love this film.
I had only seen a handful of times and I must say watching it this way was like watching a whole new film. I know that pisses some people off, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Thanks for checking out the vid 👍🏼
Gotta say, the differences here are vast. The 4k looks fine to me compared to the DVD. That white corridor scene is incredible!
It really is a great looking transfer, despite how they did it that is getting all the attention and controversy.
After watching Aliens I can see a little bit of what people are talking about with the “smoothing effect,” but to my eyes and on my equipment…it looks FANTASTIC!
Easily the best it’s ever looked!
Just watched True Lies in 4K and 95% of the time it looked fine. I actually thought the worst bits were Tom Arnold's face in the darker scenes. Wouldn't say it's waxy, just more noticeable he is wearing make-up.
@@MuckMan_Movies - you nailed it mate. That guys make up artist needed to take a chill lol….😅
That picture without the tear is crazy bro. Turn off the hdr lol
That’s one shot for sure that the DVD shows the “true essence.” Can’t deny that one…
Paul on the Twin Flicks channel has a conversation in his recent video with one of the guys who worked on the transfer. The print apparently was in bad shape.
Yeah - I hearing and reading that. I did see Paul’s vids, even his new one today comparing the Spanish bootleg Blu-ray. He does nice work there. I don’t know all the details but I have heard about the issues with the original camera negative. Thanks for stopping by to comment…👍🏼
That's fella. Paul is getting a lot of sh1t for his videos, including someone telling him to kill himself. Imagine being that screwed up as to say that to someone, who's running A YT channel as a hobby, putting out enthusiast content and it brings someone to stoop that low over an opinion on a film transfer. Some people just need to get a grip and maybe get some more fresh air and exercise.
@@benpascall4297- amen to that. I do this for fun and as a hobby as well. To think some people go to such negative places over a “4k transfer….” Do they not see all that’s going on in the world today?!? Jeez….😏
There is a Spanish bluray also that looks nice
I almost ordered that bluray just to check out the different views from it. Thought maybe it was bootleg though and didn’t think this got an “official bluray release.” But I would be interested to see it.
It's some Spanish loophole bootleg or something lol. It has grain etc. I might check it again. The 4K with HDR off looks pretty amazing though to me anyway
@@ps5andstuffhere- agree. I’m actually rather surprised in how much it looks like it could have been released this year.
Thanks for checking out the vid and sharing some thoughts…appreciate your input
Watched some of the Spanish Bluray. That looks pretty damn good and no DNR. Not much grain. You should check it to compare
The True Lies DVD is also non anamorphic so that's another strike against it.
That is rather annoying when you have to watch a disc that looks like it’s “a picture within a picture” on your screen.
@@ungraduatedmedia You can zoom in on it and make it look anamorphic but that's BS that somebody has to do that every time they want to watch it.
@@austinwillcut4919 yeah no worries…that DVD of True Lies will become my beer coaster now 😉
It looks good if turn off HDR. For me anyway. The HDR is not good on this
That’s an interesting point - I may give it a watch without the HDR on
It looks like I remember it back in the day when the HDR is off and the wax look is less noticeable to me anyway. I saw a video comparing the bluray with the 4k bluray.
@@ps5andstuffhere- I can’t compare to the bluray as I don’t know if it ever got an official release, but I would be interested in seeing that Spanish bluray.
But against the DVD - this 4k scan smashes it. There are some issues yes, but on the whole so much better in my opinion.
But I can see why some wouldn’t like it.
