When I had a young family, little money and the 456 came out I loved it, dreaming of driving the family around in one. I bought a Burago model in the same colour as the one you just drove and still have it on show 30 years later. I’m fortunate to own a manual F430 and you just rekindled the flame to add a 456. Restrained effortless beauty and timeless.

This is one my all time favourite Ferraris. I grew up in Brisbane, Australia. In the mid 90s there weren't too many Ferraris around. When this was released I went to the local dealer to have a look and boy I wasn't disappointed. The dealership had always been super nice, even when they knew you couldn't buy one. I'd been in there as a teen a few times so had to go see this. They had a dark blue with tan interior auto one. Still to this day I think it's stunning.

The first Ferrari I drove. A first love, unforgettable. Also blue, the hand brake lever at the left of the seat, resting down, a hardly describable experience. I was sad when the owner exchanged it to a manual Maranello, which he kindly let me drive also, much sharper, but without the charm of my first driven love.
    In Portugal also, of course...
Thank you for reminding me those wonderful moments.

I was never a huge fan of the 456, but I think its design has come of age. It's exactly the car I could imagine Mr.Ferrari driving, had he been around, a gentleman's express with more than adequate power and the right engine for a Ferrari. Lovely to see it driven in the Portuguese sunshine.

I've always loved the 456 and in that spec for me its perfect (apart from not being right hand drive). I've always lusted after one but have never been able to afford one even when they reached the bottom of their depreciation curve. However even if I had millions of pounds to spend on cars it would still be the first Ferrari I buy! I think they are just so timeless elegant and understated! It's a car that Ferrari no longer makes, a 4 seat naturally aspirated V12 - manual. When I think of them I think old school class!

Well Damian, I offered you a drive in my 456 in a miserable, cold and wet Kent but you decided to naff off to Portugal instead....Silly boy! Seriously though, I think you 'got' that car. I sold my 'screaming V8' F355 for this 'gentleman's express' a couple of years ago because I wanted to experience a front-engined V12 Ferrari before I shuffled off my mortal coil. What a difference, chalk and cheese, if you will. Both amazing cars in their way. Something in your commentary did surprise me though: the '456' nomenclature used with this model. Ferrari had used the cylinder capacity formula a lot of times before, think 365 BB, 512 BB etc. They also used capacity/cylinder as well - 308/328GTB/S - indicating 3/3.2 litres and 8 cylinders, then they confused everyone with '355' which indicated 3.5 litres with 5 valves per cylinder. Still, enough of the geekery - enjoyed the hell out of the video, such lovely roads out there in Portugal, keep up the good work. Crying into my beer in a miserable, cold and damp Otford, Kent.

One of my favourite Ferarri’s. Ogled over a red 456 in Harrogate while searching out a wedding ring back in 99. Wife to be wasn’t chuffed😂

I always fancied a 456 when a client of mine had one in the 90s. Understated, practical, elegant, still a Ferrari of course, but not a shouty one. 30 years later, went in to a Ferrari dealer to buy a 456.....and came out with a 550!! That 90s to 2000s era of Ferrari were, for me, the ones that I most identify with.

I had three of these culminating in one of the last 456GT M’s
I took my young family all over Europe on long autobahn enabled vacations as well as doing the Ferrari Mille Miglia Tribute. All were manual and as a family everyone had a piece of the bespoke luggage. Just wonderful days.
The original version had a number of irritating issues that made me feel that Ferrari hadn’t yet got a grip of quality but the M version was a much much better car. Nice to see some love on-line for it.

Another great "Drive Every Ferrari" video from Damien. This time it's the under appreciated 456GT. A classic grand tourer that is as gorgeous to look at as it is to drive. Prices have been low for a long time but are now on the up. As are the 356/400/412s that Damien disparages. Personally I've always loved their look and the interiors are soo cool in them. Thank you Damien for this wonderful overview of the 2 + 2 Ferraris. As a child I was lucky to see (and listen to) 250 GTE and following models in the lineage, and in my forties I drove both the 456 manual which I loved except for the over subdued engine noise, and automatic which I did not like at all. I was then extremely lucky to own a second hand 550 Maranello for a few years, until I realized I was sold a lame duckling which started draining my budget.
At the age of 5 or 6, walking in town with my dad, he said : Look ! Look ! Look ! This is a Ferrari (a 250 GT, maybe a Coupe). What a sound ! You will always recognize a Ferrari because it is the only brand which has 4 tailpipes.
To come back tho the 456 : yes a great car, an elegant an discreet Ferrari. I entirely agree with your comments. And my ! this manual gearbox with its clinks and clonks when you change gears without haste (the same on the Maranello) is simply a delight and a sort of ritual !
Thanks for your wonderful work. Great job, isn’t it ! 🙏👏

Everyone from Quentin Wilson in the mid 2000s through to Classic Cars magazine when they have been talking about "sleepers" which are underrated and undervalued, the 456GT has been on all those lists....miraculously, they are STILL reasonable money. Anyone in a position to do so - and who can both afford to run it, keep it up properly and has the organisation, time and inclination to drive it reasonably regularly - should really consider doing do ASAP as eventually they will get really rare - which will happen at the same time more than the current handful of connoisseurs will properly appreciate their loveliness and want one. No need to extrapolate on where prices will go then......now in my fifties, I was never all that on the previous decade's 911Turbo, Countach and Testarossa - but since its launch - and my early mid twenties - that has been the car I would choose.....

I have always liked the 456 and nearly bought one a few years back, but ended up with a Maserati GranTurismo S coupé AND GranCabrio S which stack up nicely and fulfill the same need with even more space for the rear seat occupants! All 3 lovely cars, thanks for the video!

Mint. Sounds angrier then any other 456.

Properly set up LSD in the 456 (as can be seen on my channel).
The sticky bits are seriously sticky! I even ruined a pair of trousers on the steering column 😆
Lovely underrated car that works well with straight pipes.

My ultimate 3 car garage would be the 456GT, a 355GTS and a 550 Maranello. And all of them with a manual of course. 😍

IMO the 456 GT is gorgeous. The only thing I wish Ferrari had done was have hydraulic lifters instead of solids. I'd still love to have one though.

    I loved the 456GT
and I agree it was an overlooked Ferrari..!!
    Thank you for this review
but let’s not get too many likes, while I might still be able to knick one on the cheap..?
    I also love the 400/412 2+2
I find them incredibly beautiful; sue me

I’d love to find one in this exact spec, but I would not hate an automatic if it was clean and sorted.

A classy car, one that definitely benefits for being in dark blue, rather than Ferrari red. A thinking man's express indeed.

Have always liked the 456. The spec on this one is perfect with a manual gearbox and non-airbag steering wheel. Ferrari's early early air-bag equipped steering wheels are so ugly. Agree it would be nice to hear more of that glorious V12 under hard acceleration.

Like you I originally foud the 456 boring, it reminded me of a C5 Corvette, but it has grown on me.
You went through the history of the 4 seater Ferraris, but didn't mention the mid-engine v8 4 seaters. As the owner of a 308 GT4 Dino that is a car I would love to see you drive on this series.

Ive just bought one but the 456 mGTA. or a song 30000 on clock I had a 308 many years back promised myself another one I collect classics and this is one of 403 only made I think in red 43 only its a thinking mans Ferrari for sure - it'll be on my drive by Wednesday I don't get excited by much maybe a woman half my age.... And I have a Cobra but I just wanted one of these understated Ferraris the gamble is it will double in price over next 5 years so fun and escalating investment. Lucky me
