    Nice! I love how you thought about wanting to use a specific custom shader all the time and created a workflow to import to each scene.

    Your pack is a must for any serious Maya user! And yes, I tell everyone I know this too. Please keep up the great work.

    I'd like a way to add multiple custom materials and a quick way to apply those. I usually model with multiple colors since they help me differentiate key parts like base, trim, doors, windows, etc. Having a quick way to apply those really nice.

      How about this workflow, create a plane and subdivide it so it has 6+ faces. Create your 6+ default materials and apply each material to one face of the plane so now you have a palette of materials in the 3d scene. Now use my copy paste scripts to copy any of the materials from the palette to the clipboard and then paste that to your selection whenever you want so you never have to open the hypershade or leave the 3d view. When you want a new material just copy that one into the clipboard and paste it. The nice part is once you've got some materials on your object you can just copy paste those directly from the object to other parts or new objects without even using the palette object. Here's a really old video of the tool in action, (I need to make a new video) the tool has been cleaned up a lot and also comes with a replace whole material id button czcams.com/video/BvSg2T2L5Do/video.html

    Hi malcolm , i know that this video from '21 but i didn't saw any *updates* if this will support maya 2024

    • @malcolm341
      @malcolm341  Před 3 měsíci

      @Inferno535 Yes works in 2024 and any new version of Maya that comes out after, it's written in Mel so it's forward compatible unlike Python scripts which need to be updated with each new release of Maya. One thing to note though is it doesn't work with the use default material view port mode, there doesn't appear to be a way to override that which is annoying.

    Hi malcolm, I've followed the instructions but the button that shows the default material on everything (the button next to wireframe on shaded) still just uses the lambert, is there any way to make this work because i'm at a loss. I use it very often and its the reason I bought the script, thought it would work.

    • @malcolm341
      @malcolm341  Před 2 lety

      Hi Alex, that was never a feature of this tool, this tool remaps the default material in Maya. What you're talking about is a tool that replaces all materials on all objects with another material. My tool replaces the default material on objects that have the default material applied, but if you've already applied something other than the default material it won't change. I'm happy to give you a refund if you like.

    This is an interesting script, would it work with VRay materials?

    • @malcolm341
      @malcolm341  Před 2 lety

      If you're talking about the set default material to selected I would need to update the tool to support VRay, if you want me to do that can you point me to where I can install Vray from so I can see the Vray materials in my version of Maya.

    • @stephenhibberd4309
      @stephenhibberd4309 Před 2 lety

      If you would prefer me to supply the installer for your particular version of Maya, just let me know what version of Maya you use, I can share the free trial installer via google drive or similar file sharing service.

      @@stephenhibberd4309 Okay the tool has been updated, the set selected as default and export/import default material now work with VRay materials. The only one that doesn't work is the mesh material which crashes Maya if you set it as default so they tool ignores that material.

    i remember seeing a tool for 3ds max that have a bar indicating the triangles budget for the scene, so let's say you specified 50k tris as the budget, the tool shows a green bar and as yoy progress with your work and the tris count increases the bar turns to red, is it possible to code something similar in Maya?

    • @malcolm341
      @malcolm341  Před 2 lety

      From what I've seen so far there aren't any colours for Maya HUD elements so it might not be possible to make it green or red, it would always just be white. You could probably do something similar as a tool you ran periodically that told you if you were over budget or not. I'm not sure how useful this would be though because you can just look at the selected vert count of your object to tell how close you are to the budget as you work and that updates in real time.

    no redshift version? 🥲

    • @malcolm341
      @malcolm341  Před 8 měsíci

      @sunwookim3896 I don't have access to Redshift, I could probably get it working if it's something you will use. In the past someone wanted Vray materials to work with this tool and I was able to figure it out. I just need to know the Maya names for all the Redshift nodes so the export button will work correctly. The selected material button should already work by default with Redshift, give it a try.
