Strange Magic is from 1975! The story I heard was originally, Jeff Lynne wanted to pick up where The Beatles left off. If you keep that in mind, you can't help to hear it in these early ELO songs. Everything starts to sound like The Beatles "I Am A Walrus". As far as LIVE goes, ELO's "Wembley Or Bust" live is only a few years old & it's a breathtaking performance! Do check out clips from that show.

Outrageously talented bands like ELO, Rush, Styx , Queen, were all categorized as Progressive rock. There was never a More creative , and influential era than the 70's for influencing music at its best.And no one did it better than the previously mentioned

I think you should mix it up a bit and do a more peppy ELO track, and then come back later to react to a beautiful ballad like, "One Summer Dream". What makes it such an ethereal piece is: the two pianos (the other being electric), smooth bass, sweeping strings, solo guitars, and the acoustic rhythm guitar which is plugged into an audio phase shifter [phaser]. I'm a musician myself; I play many instruments.
Jeff Lynne writes, plays, and produces all of ELO original music. He has produced famous albums for Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, George Harrison, the Beatles Anthology, Joe Cocker, Paul McCartney, Bryan Adams, etc. Today, Jeff Lynne's ELO has a completely different lineup. The only original member who occasionally joins him is Richard Tandy, the keyboardist. Jeff's last two ELO albums has Jeff playing every instrument on the album. When he mixes a song, NOTHING gets lost or buried. Every instrument/lyric is heard distinctly. He truly is a musical genius.
Jeff Lynne is a genius and sounds just as good if not better live even at the age of 74. You should listen to 'All Over The World' flash mob as it is such a happy song.
I just have to chime in here. ELO, no matter how people try to compare their music to other groups, created a sound of their own. They have not been matched in their uniqueness to this day. They are my favorite band, bar none. Timeless and over time, classic. I think they will live on long after I'm gone. I just hope more and more of the younger generations listen and appreciate their style and skill.
this group was born out of the late 60s into the early70s, then founder member Roy wood left for creative reasons of his own and had his own group, ELO under Jeff and the other band members never looked back and rose to international super star status, and personally i cant name a bad number from ELO they have poured out great amazing music for 50 years or more,,geff has produced and performed with many superstar musicians even produced tracks for the Beatles the guy is super talented and is out there with other special artists, sadly many dead and gone from us now ,maybe performing for the gods

The video from the live Wembley show is excellent. As Tara notes, 'Telephone' is a good choice. Also, if you like a symphonic feel mixed with rock, Roger Waters (who wrote a ton of Pink Floyd's stuff as their bass player) writes rock operas, so his stuff has that epic feel that this, and a lot of ongoing Pink Floyd stuff, also has. It's different from this, but it's extremely artful, with super high production values. I'd recommend something off maybe Amused to Death, Like What God Wants, or maybe Gunner's Dream from The Final Cut.

For your Labor Day podcast, a couple of ELO live suggestions : - Evil Woman live at Wembley Stadium. A similar vibe to Strange Magic, and you really see how they pull the orchestral/rock sound together. - Roll Over Beethoven live from the Zoom concert. A classic rock and roll song covered by everyone, but elevated to a rock orchestra extravaganza.
"Fire On High" is a trip unlike any other. Also, pretty much anything off A New World Record is excellent, with special props to "Tightrope," "Rockaria," "Telephone Line," and "So Fine" and "Livin' Thing" as a set.
Jeff Lynne was a very good friend on the Beatles. But the original ELO was a collaboration between Jeff and Roy Wood from Wizzard. Roy left because he didn't like Jeff trying to rock it up (despite Roy's See My Baby Jive being so rocky.. I defy anyone to stop their feet from tapping), so it became Jeff's baby.
For what it’s worth, this is the radio, or edited version of the song. There is a full version of the song which adds about 20 seconds of strings in the beginning that in my opinion is the only way to hear this song.
You need to get the live songs from the Wembley or bust show (2017) on DVD. Great performance and they have a spaceship above the stage with stacks of lasers.
For live ELO - try something from the mid 1970s - raw sound with 1x violin, 2x cellos (e.g. Portsmouth Guildhall 1976) or something from recent years with full orchestra (Hyde Park or Wembley shows) - you'll get totally different (but equally classy) vibes.
The much underrated 2001 album Zoom is one of my favourites and was my awakening to music, made me want to make music, I recommend from zoom, Ordinary Dream, Moment in Paradise, and State of Mind. Almost 100% of the album is played by Jeff Lynne himself and had one of the last ever George Harrison guitar parts on the album. Also for live videos, check out Telephone Line Live at Wembley, he's nearly 70 but his voice is soooo fuckin good still, like honey!
I wouldn't listen to others' ratings of the songs. You might be able to get a general consensus into the better songs, but individually they vary so much as to subjective analysis. I like more of their lesser-known songs than their hits, actually. Like Last Train to London, Believe me now/Stepping Out, Night in the City, Standing in the rain, Twilight, Secret Messages, Tightrope. I keep discovering new ones I like.
People will go with 'Telephone Line' as their best 'slow' song, although 'Shangri La' is beautiful, as is 'Need Her Love' and 'Wishing'. However, ELO really come alive with their amazing song called 'Tightrope'. You won't be disapointed with all those instruments. If you want rock from ELO then try 'Do Ya'. I would say at the time they came out, (and Yes I have seen them live since the early 70's) they were not hard Rock, now that leaves "Prog Rock" ( prog..restive Rock that came out of the UK, along with Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Yes, Blind Faith, Steve Winwood, Moody Blues,Genesis, Peter Gabriel, Alan Parsons Project, Procul Harem, Supertramp, and more. Absolutely find live versions of all the above. There are a few with part or full symphony with bands like Moody Blues, ELO, Procul Harem, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, as well occasionally touring with small symphonies some of the above bands. I have seen all these bands with and without symphony, indoors and outdoors. All were Brilliant, and saw most of them several times, everything they toured N. America, I am in Vancouver, Canada. I can listen to any song now, and am taken back to that very concert, very song played live, loud, with lasers, light shows etc. They are fond memories, being part of music, I saw many of the best bands, some are still going, and some retired or gone solo. I f you get a chance to see one of your favorite bands, you will remember it forever. Choose one you like and it transcends music into an experience, and you will leave with a great smile, lasting a few days, and humming or singing for days. Go with special friend or group that share musical likes. Enjoy your experience of music from the 70's, 80's, 90s.

Jeff Lynne was a very good friend on the Beatles. But the original ELO was a collaboration between Jeff and Roy Wood from Wizzard. Roy left because he didn't like Jeff trying to rock it up (despite Roy's See My Baby Jive being so rocky.. I defy anyone to stop their feet from tapping), so it became Jeff's baby.

For what it’s worth, this is the radio, or edited version of the song. There is a full version of the song which adds about 20 seconds of strings in the beginning that in my opinion is the only way to hear this song.

For live ELO - try something from the mid 1970s - raw sound with 1x violin, 2x cellos (e.g. Portsmouth Guildhall 1976) or something from recent years with full orchestra (Hyde Park or Wembley shows) - you'll get totally different (but equally classy) vibes.
The much underrated 2001 album Zoom is one of my favourites and was my awakening to music, made me want to make music, I recommend from zoom, Ordinary Dream, Moment in Paradise, and State of Mind. Almost 100% of the album is played by Jeff Lynne himself and had one of the last ever George Harrison guitar parts on the album. Also for live videos, check out Telephone Line Live at Wembley, he's nearly 70 but his voice is soooo fuckin good still, like honey!

I wouldn't listen to others' ratings of the songs. You might be able to get a general consensus into the better songs, but individually they vary so much as to subjective analysis. I like more of their lesser-known songs than their hits, actually. Like Last Train to London, Believe me now/Stepping Out, Night in the City, Standing in the rain, Twilight, Secret Messages, Tightrope. I keep discovering new ones I like.

People will go with 'Telephone Line' as their best 'slow' song, although 'Shangri La' is beautiful, as is 'Need Her Love' and 'Wishing'. However, ELO really come alive with their amazing song called 'Tightrope'. You won't be disapointed with all those instruments. If you want rock from ELO then try 'Do Ya'. You arn't even at the entrance of the rabbit hole yet 😁

Absolutely find live versions of all the above. There are a few with part or full symphony with bands like Moody Blues, ELO, Procul Harem, Emerson, Lake and Palmer,
as well occasionally touring with small symphonies some of the above bands. I have seen all these bands with and without symphony, indoors and outdoors. All were Brilliant, and saw most of them several times, everything they toured N. America, I am in Vancouver, Canada. I can listen to any song now, and am taken back to
that very concert, very song played live, loud, with lasers, light shows etc. They are fond memories, being part of music, I
saw many of the best bands, some are still going, and some retired or gone solo. I f you get a chance to see one of your favorite bands, you will remember it forever. Choose one you like and it transcends music into an experience, and you will leave with a great smile, lasting a few days, and humming or singing for days.
