  • There's another new station on the network, this time in Scotland where station number 2,581 opened up at East Linton on the line between Edinburgh and Dunbar on Wednesday 13th December 2023. #EastLinton
I popped down for the for the first train, and took a special guest with me to try and imagine what it must have been like to be a commuter at the original East Linton station ...

A tale of two Lintons - East Lnton has an excellent new station for 2000 residents. Down in Cambs/Suffolk, Linton and Haverhill have no stations, despite a population of well above 30k. The line from Cambridge to Sudbury was also axed by Dr B but is desperately needed now. Most of the trackbed is still available. What is lacking is the will to do it. Come on Cambs, look at East Linton for inspiration!

Same here in Oxfordshire.... Wantage Road station between Didcot and Swindon closed in 1964 the same year as East Linton. Despite massive new housing in the area leading to heavily congested roads and a 48yr campaign to reopen the station nothing ever gets done, it's not even on the radar☹ Like East Linton we are also on a main line [London-Bristol] and have the extra advantage of 4 tracks [2 main/2 relief] which could accommodate stopping services + also on a main road/bus route. A new station here would be a no brainer....sadly all that happens is the can gets kicked further down the road. People in Scotland are so lucky to have these new stations....to us it's but a pipedream.

Most of what I did was wiring up the signalling and points for that section for the East Coast electrification out through Drem and East Linton. I don't think I've caused any accidents!

Great video Geoff. Always nice to see new stations opening. Also as a side note; being a big fan of 1940s and 1950s Hollywood films and clothing styles I really liked the way you and Christine dressed up for the occasion. Christine reminded me of Katharine Hepburn or Gene Tierney. The fedora mishap and the trainers were a bit of a let down for you Geoff but other than that it was still a good outfit sort of reminding me of James Stewart or Fred MacMurray. Christine is also a great companion. Would be great to see more of her as you two have a great dynamic and chemistry.

I wondered why Geoff looked suspiciously smart. The suit suits.
A lot of railways were chopped from East Lothian to the Borders. A few were branch lines- I'm thinking of Gullane and Haddington (were Tranent and Macmerry on branch lines?) and whole connecting routes were erased. This was definitely shortsighted. Hopefully Reston and East Linton help redress this.
Friends in the area have invited me to cycle out to East Linton on a bike made around the time the station was originally closed.

Was great to briefly meet Geoff on Wednesday afternoon. I came to East Linton again on Saturday as I wanted to leave on a train. My plans were slightly scuppered as TPE had crew issues with the Berwick trains so I had to get the bus here. There were only around seven cars in the car park but there were still plenty of people boarding/alighting the Scotrail and TPE services in both directions after 5PM. Hopefully it will perform OK despite the irregular service.

Well done on getting to East Linton, Geoff. My visit on Saturday, 16th December was frustrated by a TPE cancellation - just as happened when trying to make a first visit to Reston. The design looks okay, functional and probably easy to maintain. Conversely, the new Brent Cross West has broken the mould with bespoke design features although the area it serves is rather different. Waiting shelters at East Linton look a bit sparse. Has the ‘newest station in Scotland’ banner been taken down at Inverness Airport? Will have to make another attempt to check out this new station - at least there won’t be a piper there…….

A lovely lady to grace the new station opening. Have just learned Amtrak may bring back passenger serive to Delmarva here in the states. If they do will welcome you both.

Hooray! I don't know if this would have made it work, but at 6:33 when you're trying to buy a ticket from Waverley you type "EASTL" not "EAST L", i.e. no space.
