The fact he can pull off a making it look like his body is a separate entity from his head, especially in that first fight, is insanely impressive and speaks volumes about his ability as an actor. Also, in a separate note, using someone’s own gun implant against them by breaking their arm and then blowing their own head off has to be the single most badass kill in any movie I’ve ever seen.
I really liked that dodge he does in the first fight. He could have just learned his head back a bit, but because STEM didn't control that, he instead leaned his whole body to get it out of the way. You can also see that instead of simply turning his head to avoid another attack, STEM actually uses his hand to turn his face away to avoid it. Amazing acting & attention to detail there
I can't believe this movie was made on a budget of only $3 million. It seriously looks like something made for $60 million. Which really goes to show you that a high budget and big name actors isn't anywhere close to as important as good ideas, good writing and a genuinely innovative and talented director like Whannell. And I seriously often forget that Logan Marshall-Green isn't Tom Hardy while I'm watching this film lol.
They really squeezed the juice out of their sets. The amazing camera movement / angles really stood out and displayed professional cinematography. It reminds me of grand Budapest hotel and some instances of Star Trek into darkness.
I read that the director said that the 3 mill budget made it the film better and gritter. To much cgi can be lame, I love the noise when stem is controlling the body and dodging punches and moving like veerrooom. And the robotic way he moves when stem finally takes control of his body.
i wanna see this movie with stems voice edited out so we can witness how crazy Grey must sound while he talks to stem while fighting, like he must look crazy
It's quite interesting how this ruthless Ai also has that desire to live, a survival instinct that triggers the defense mechanism when it is threatened with being shut down.
There's probably some weird ass suicide bugs out there but it's not that strange, In fact, its pretty fucking common for sentient life to not want to jump off a bridge. Sentient things kind of like being sentient. This is why we have emotions, can see colour, have children, evolve. Everything comes from survival.
I watched everything of the Raid and what's like i and couldn't find much that was seriously on par, but this one is very close. The fights blew me away, the camera work enhances a fight scene by a thousandfold.
@@TommorowISNAP well lower budget means the director has to be a little more creative to stand a chance against those high budget Hollywood movies. That's why it's good
@@irjiiu1041 Very true, although I'm glad there are still directors aiming for unique fighting scenes when they have a low budget, I do think they reserve more recognition though.
This movie is soooo much underrated. The story arc is simple, yet cohesive. The fight scenes are perfect. Great camera work, great acting by the protagonist as you can see him learning to work with his new powers, ranging from total surprise and horror to being perfectly in sync. The movements are robotic, optimal and not wasting energy and time.
Awesome how STEM also gives Gray superhuman abilties too. He's strong enough to effortlessly dodge people and counter their attacks and throw fully grown men a few few away along with holding them above the ground by the neck with one arm which isn't humanly possible. One of STEM's abilties must be nerve enhancement along with chemical hormone distribution like adrenaline.
He just blocks the pain receptors and over work the muscles. I'd imagine a real life version of this would leave the user feeling very sore after every fight.
It wasn't image stabilization. According to a Corridor Crew "VFX Artists React" video released today, it was done all in camera. The camera communicated with an iphone gyroscope attached to the actor's body. czcams.com/video/JL2Lk8XqwTg/video.html

My brother in law suggested this movie and this movie is unique. I almost watched great movies of Hollywood, korean, Japanese, thai but nothing close to this movie. I loved it. Especially the fighting scenes and the climax.
I used to seriously hate quick-cutting, but with this movie, it’s actually good for fast-paced action if you can see what is going on. In Upgrade, you can see what Grey and Fisk are doing, and it doesn’t look like a jumbled mess like Taken.

This was like a better, more sci-fi version of Venom
I thought it was eddy but it's not
To be fair venom was PG13, so they can only do so much brutality with a pretty gruesome symbiote.
Good point. Some of the shit the symbiotic get away with in the comics definitely won’t earn a PG-13 rating lol
Jacoby this is why it needs to be R rated
