      I love it too lol I’m from Alabama so if you slowed it down to almost slow motion then you’d have the way my family accent sounds, I have lost mine to Florida but you most definitely sound like my in laws who live in Lores SC 😁🍻 and thanks for your video. Wish I had seen it when you put it out but hey my fault for not being subscribed right? (I am now btw) but yeah those red pellets..... I gave my dragon some to try and saw it said you could add water to soften them up, being she was younger I did so and put them in her tank and left for work. I come home to what looked like she exploded from the inside out so naturally I had a small stroke but the closer I got I could see she had crawled through her bowl and went glass surfing etc and had it all day on her so the bits on her back and tail had dried in the light etc. so I’m sure you have a nice visual by now of how miss priss was looking so for the best part..... she’s a zero pigment....lol I can’t begin to explain how many times I gave her a bath the first few days, then she stayed faded pink till her next shed. More importantly though it made me think about what that food was doing internally and what not. Thanks again for this video 😁

    I have a two things to add.
    1, use coloured bins to provide more darkness for the insects. this will help keep stress levels down.
    2, don't use dog food, rabbit pellets are a better option. Dog food contains too much protein which can cause problems for both insect and reptile.
    Otherwise, this is a great setup video and should be followed as Elle says.

    I've not seen you in a while...congrats on that commercial you did for...Hero Wars or whatever it was with your beardie on your shoulder.
    I always put slick packing tape at the top perimeter of my bin and in the past 7 years I've had 3 escape, even when I leave the lid off most of the summer. Once I started using a little taller bin about 4 years ago, nothing has escaped. I always use flat egg crates because the folding ones always seem to be such a hassle. You could have used a black bin versus clear. Dubia really like pitch black, and a black bin would block out so much more light than clear. I picked up a HUGE bin from Lowe's for $9 each...someone mismarked them, but I'll take a deal. It is harder to heat for breeding though. I use a Cozy Foot Warmer which was made for people standing on cold cement all day, so with a thermostat, it does a great job.
    Not sure if you knew this, but when crickets die, they give off a gas that is toxic to other crickets, and more start to die, and it's a quick cycle before a ton of your crickets have died. That's what a guy told me that used to work at one of those large cricket mills.
    My favorite part about crickets was when we ordered, we ordered 500 at a time. Seal them in a bin and with that many chirping at the same time in an enclosed bin, it was quiet peaceful background noise.
    So happy your channel is doing so well!

    Is this a breeding setup or is this just how you store your deliveries? I don’t want to breed, I just want to know how to keep them alive long enough for my future beardie. Also, I plan on getting a juvenile, how many would you order weekly and how long do they stay alive?

    • @ellesreptiles
      @ellesreptiles  Před 5 lety +17

      I don't breed either. This is just how I store my deliveries, as they have to be gut loaded to stay healthy for your beardie.😊Dubia roaches live for quite a while. I've had very few die, ever. I order about 150-200 to last my adult beardie for a month. Juveniles might eat a bit more than that, as they're transitioning from mostly bugs and a small salad daily, to lots of salad and a small amount of bugs daily.

    Friendly tip, you don't want to just feed your roaches anything. Dog food & cat food is best to stay away from because it has too much protein which will increase the amount of uric acid the roaches will then pass onto your reptile, increasing their risk of getting gout. Other than that, nice set-up. :)

    Ugh, dealing with roaches & other insects is the O N L Y reason I don't have a bearded dragon. They creep me out. I think I could get over handling them maybe (for the love of my own beardie), but definitely don't want them to escape and/or multiply in my house. Advice?? How do I get over it? Do you know anyone who has? Also, tips on thoroughly preventing escape? Thanks in advance if you reply!

    • @ellesreptiles
      @ellesreptiles  Před 4 lety

      I'm not sure how you can get over that fear other than just working with the bugs 🤔
      Luckily they won't multiply in your house, but I don't think there's any way to completely prevent escapes. Feeding in a separate bin can help, though, because then you can just dump some bugs into the bin, pour in some calcium or vitamins, shake them around, and put the beardie in. When he/she is done, you can just pour the bugs back into their container. You can also use feeding tongs and wear gloves to prevent ever having to touch them 😊

      Elle's Reptiles Trying out getting some expose to them first is a REALLY great idea...! I have to brainstorm on that (Like maybe volunteering at a pet store, or finding someone who has a beardie...). & I think I'd definitely use the separate feeding container idea, so they wouldn't just randomly be crawling around in the beardie's cage. - Thank you!!

    I am planning on getting a Bearded dragon soon and i have never owned a reptile before. I am doing research first and I was wondering what happens if you don't gut load their insects? Is this mandatory or can I just go buy a dozen of crickets from the store and give them to him..? Also, can I only feed one type of insect every day/ for its whole life or does it have to be a variety? Thanks!

    • @ellesreptiles
      @ellesreptiles  Před 5 lety +2

      Gutloading is how you make sure that the insects contain the appropriate amount of nutrients for your animal. This is important when buying insects in large quantities (because it’s a lot cheaper to buy in large quantities as opposed to daily from a pet store).
      If you want to buy crickets from the store and give them directly to the reptile that day, that’s fine! Pet stores gut load theirs with cricket calcium and water.
      And it’s great to feed them a variety! It’s good for them to have a “staple” food like crickets or dubia roaches, as they are going to be the most nutritious. Then you can feed them “treat foods” like wax worms, horn worms, Phoenix worms, etc to add variety. 😊

      He breeds his own dubia roaches & uses coolers to house them. Long as you ventilate it properly to be fine.

    Would this be necessary for one gecko? I want one so bad but insects/mice freak me out. Its the ONLY reason I haven't gotten a leo or ball python. 😭 if a colony isn't required, how often would you need to buy roaches, crickets and worms?

    • @ellesreptiles
      @ellesreptiles  Před 9 měsíci

      For one gecko, you'd only need a small container for them, so that you can gutload them first. You can always look into getting a crested gecko - they don't require insects at all (even though some like them occasionally)
      For ball pythons, it's best to feed them frozen/thawed rodents if that helps any (my mom is terrified of rats, and dead or alive doesn't make a difference, so if them not being alive doesn't matter - I totally understand)

    This is going to sound really dumb. My dubia roaches are breeding very well. The only problem I have is I'm not quite sure how to feed them to my geckos. so far I've been just kind of dumping them in there enclosure so they can hunt and go for them since they are newly acquired geckos that are rather skittish. Unfortunately I'm afraid they are hiding before they can get them all. Is there a better way to feed them? IV seen the worm bowls but I'm afraid that the large roaches my white lined geckos need will still be able to escape

    • @ellesreptiles

      It’s pretty normal for them to lose their appetite for a little while after being treated for parasites, as it can make them feel a bit off. Giving probiotics after medication can help them feel better quicker. (I get mine from beardeddragon.co)

    I just wanted to let you know that for hydration the best thing for dubias is to get water crystals because spounges and paper towels harbor bacteria and for feeding don't feed them dog/cat food or fish food as they're full of protein,the reason I say DONT feed them these foods is because dubias are already 36% protein. If you feed dubias protein packed food and give the dubias to your animal you risk giving your animal gout

    I just want to ask, will they breed there? I’m thinking about getting a bearded dragon and i’m trying to get information about them. I’ve never had any exotic pet so i don’t know how to take care of insects. I don’t want to breed them by the way. Sorry if this is a stupid question, I’m new to this.

      Adult male dubia have wings, but they can’t fly. They use them to glide down from high areas and they’ll flail them around, but they can’t just take off flying, if that helps haha.
      Definitely don’t do dead insects, they’re not good for them. You can do black soldier fly larvae, silkworms, Phoenix worms, and superworms as adults. These are all more pricey, though.
