I just saw the video the Professor posted with Princess talking about DS9 and when he mentioned watching the show in high school, I was surprised that he is around my age, as I was in high school at the time. I thought he was older than that. Now that I know his was father was 81, back in 2015, I'm surprised again, because he looks so much younger, lol.

Amazing video. It's true how brutal kids but mostly parents can be. My brother and I loved the fantasy stuff when we were kids, and still do. Back story: My father was a police officer, kind of a hard man. His father died shortly after return from world war 2, my father was 6 but I digress. He was raised by a strict mother and that's the way he raised us. He supported us with everything we chose to do and always said that if anyone told you to do it different, tell'em to go to hell. It was difficult for me in school because I did play sports. I collected comics, overpower, mtg and liked the spice girls... Yeah... Anyway, When I got to highschool, I drove an old muscle car and played football, the "cool kids" didn't know what to think of me because I loved talking about DBZ, final fantasy, Pokemon and such so they stayed pretty much clear. Best advice I could give to anyone is to not worry about what those other people think because there will always be plenty of others who share your interests. When the time comes when I have a son/daughter I will show them my hobbies and if they like it cool, if not, show me what you like because I want him/her to be happy. You do amazing work! Keep the vids coming!

Raaanch I guess I was kinda blessed with where I went to high school, as no-one was really judgemental. I had line backers from the football team playing Pokemon with me and some other kids including people from the math team and total druggies. I was on the rowing team and my gf was the president of the creative writing club and treasurer for the anime club. everyone was really accepting

Hey, I know how you felt in your childhood. I have a severe lung condition, and I used to have an oxygen tan, (which everyone was afraid of, so I was alone), and now I have been diagnosed with clinical depression. But I found out my old friends had started playing M:TG, and that is how I am now part of their group! Thank you so much for furthering my understanding of this game! You have already made my life much better than before!

We are going to sit down and play there soon, were gonna go to FNM and prereleases and have an amazing time, and I have to thank you for that, for helping me not only financialy but also giving me courage to go to a local game store. What an amazing story. I too had a similar situation growing up, and I'm only 19. I find it heartwarming that your dad would do these videos with you even when he doesn't know too much about the game. Today is my father's birthday, so hearing this story gave me a reminder of how lucky I am to have a supportive father who didn't mind that his son would rather mess around with card games and wrestling figures, but instead give full support to it. Thank you so much for this reminder, and I'm glad you're able to do what you love. Maybe when your son is a little older you can give him a deck for his birthday and let him decide if he enjoys it or not. Hopefully he comes to enjoy the thing that brings us all together :D

Yo... I fucking cried like a baby after watching this. I immediately went and hugged both of my parents. Then told them what I watched. The "feels" were real here. I was the same way coming up. Well, except replace My Little Pony with Legos. Ha ha. I need to shake your hand man. You are the coolest guy I'm subscribed to. Your videos never disappoint and you need to take all the time you need, to make them. Godspeed.
I have a few questions for you though.
Where is the Tiny Leaders video? Ha ha. I know a bajillion people are asking that one.
Where is a good place that I can buy MTG art that can be framed? I would kill for a Sunpetal Grove, Any Ravinca/Innistrad/Zendikar Land Art, Soulfire Grand Master, Geist Of Saint Traft, and/or Baneslayer Angel to hang up.
And I know you're gonna keep doing that podcast with Wedge but, do you plan on doing anymore collabs with other CZcamsrs?
Thanks again for the great videos and I'm happy others are seeing your work. I'm even happier that they like it enough to to sub and help your channel grow. You deserve it man. Cheers.

I know this video is old but it really brings a smile to my face because your father reminds me of my own parents. Growing up having nobody understand what you like when everyone around you is interested in Football and you have to feel different because you're one of the only people who don't show interest. My dad would try things out like fishing, football, baseball, etc. to see if I'd like it, yeah, but at the end my parents knew that things like card games were what I liked and would fully support me in my hobby. At the end of the day, support from your loved ones is one of the greatest things you can have in this world, no matter what it may be for.
    Thanks again, professor.

My mom recently passed and hearing you talk about your father reminded me of how she always supported me, even when I messed up. This was a real tearjerker. My mom bought me cards and brought me to friends houses to draft and she never learned how to play, but she always did her best to make sure I enjoyed life and learned to be my own person. This video was really amazing and made me want to cry a little bit as well. Your dad supporting you is an absolutely amazing thing to hear because my dad was the same way though he never drove me to the store to help me get cards and stuff. Even though I wasn't the kid who was big into sports and preferred to watch My Little Pony FiM and play Yu-Gi-Oh and recently Magic as well he supported me no matter what even though I knew he would never get into any of it. My father recently passed away about a month ago and its upset me immensely that the one friend i had in the world that knew me better than almost anyone else is gone now. The reason I'm commenting this on your video is because though I can no longer have plenty of years ahead of me to spend time with my dad and have fun I want you to enjoy as much time as possible with your father and I want to wish you luck with your channel and your life ahead of you. Thank you for all the hard work you do with your channel and I'll be here supporting you for as long as you decide to stay on youtube.

Your dad is a great story and I felt the same as you growing up with being "different", it wasn't until I was in my twenties when I realized I could like what I like and also be open minded to things other people liked and not feel any grudges or ill-will towards any of them. This is a great video and I really hope that your future brings you as much ease to allow difference as your father allowed you to be. It's pretty horrible how generations treat people who are different than the norm so poorly (especially back then), so I hope that one day, everyone can exist peacefully. Everyone should be what they are and ALL parents should support their children no matter what they're into.

I just recently found your channel and started watching from the first video. As I watched I was surprised to find out how much we both have in common. Same Age, started playing Magic around the same time, stopped playing Magic about the time, Returned to Magic about the same time. Same preferences in Magic, and I too hate to have to choose a favorite, the list goes on. Then I got to this video and granted the similarities or early ages are not so much alike, I never had the My Little Ponies, but I did intentionally go the other direction every time and never cared what anyone thought (Still Don't). Magic the Gathering did start many friendships, and brought some old friends back around. Never really had a dad, just a single mom doing the best she could. But I am getting off topic. I just wanted to let you know this Video is by far the best I have seen so far and has a strong message. Thanks for sharing this.

Like it did for a lot of people here this brought a tear to my eyes as well.
I grew up in a very traditional family and my parents rejected my hobbies. But me being unwilling to change I went through a rebellious phase in a pretty different way than most people probably experience it. Rather than skipping school and doing drugs I simply stopped listening to them when they told me to stop enjoying my nerdy hobbies like playing cards or watching certain TV shows.
Eventually they gave up on trying to change me, not because they realized they were wrong but because they realized that *I* could not be changed. No child should have to go through that and it amazes me that your father, who grew up in a far more traditional era, could be so supportive of you.

Professor - When I first came across your videos, a few months ago, I found them to be a bit dry and clinical. Not exactly to my tastes. But since then, I've not only come to subscribe to the channel, but appreciate more deeply what you're doing here. You've embraced the sheer and utter silliness that I have come to love about your channel. I watched your recent podcast with Wedge, and realized that you and I are more alike than I would have expected. But it was THIS video that makes me truly understand how similar our paths have been.
I just wanted to tell you that I thank you for giving of your time so freely to entertain us, and thanks also for opening up and being so honest in this video. I had a special relationship with one of my parents as well. In my case, it was my mother who supported everything I did, and spoiled me beyond her means. I recently lost her to cancer, so hearing your words in this video echoed my feelings towards my mom. Be sure to spend as much time as you are able to, spoiling your father in return for what he's done for you. Every moment is precious.

Another amazing story...this one brought a tear to my eye in fact. My father never understood me or my interests when I was a boy . He was all baseball, heavy machinery and construction. I was a scrawny lonely nerd who loved Star Wars and sat out under the stars at night with my telescope in the wee hours of the mornings. I was introduced to D&D in high school then Magic...both of those games brought me out of my shell. I made great friends who are still a part of my life to this day. My father still does not understand who I am but I will always love him because he just let me be...me :)

I like sports and i also like magic. I would also see kids in my school who would be bullied and picked on because they were perceived to be different, but i would make it a point to talk with them and be friendly to them. I found that it was a lot more pleasant being around them than a lot of the guys i played sports with bc they would always be interested in talking about what they loved, as well as having a lot of whitty humor to interject every now and then. When i would hang out with the sports guys, they did also talk about what they liked in sports, but they would also talk about things they didn't like (that person/those people over there) or how they would do this or that demoralizing thing to this or that girl. This is why i chose to start hanging out more with those thought of as "outcasts"

But when I got older I moved and I meet some wierd kids that were like me in the lunchroom playing magic they where nice to me and they got me into the game. So this video hit me hard I'll say it it made me cry and feel good to know that there are other people like me that have gone through similar things. So if you see this at all, thank you.

It is encouraging to here your personal story about this - thank you. Although MLP wasn't a part of my childhood as a child of the mid-late 90's, Pokemon and Brian Jacques' Redwall books were and I was most certainly not a "sports fanatic" like the rest.

I can relate to you so much. i was always the one with a different opinion on things... the socially awkward guy. my father always supported me on everything i was going through and still does, while my mother (back then) tried to change me. my father isn't as old as your father, but he was also 100% with me on every decision i made. And if i ever have kids i will do the same.
This video really touched me. Good job.

This video was more than just a bit good - and that's putting it extremely mildly. I guess what I should say is your video is important. It's honest. It's spoken from the heart. It's real - people have different interests and society wont always agree or support, society will be cruel). It's lived through and lived in. This video is crucial truth.
    Love and love unconditionally.
Thank you professor for sharing this. It takes real guts, and a true sense of wisdom to post a story like this.

Thank you for making and posting this video. I'm fairly new to MTG and I've found your channel to be a great source of information. It has helped me find my place in a community that has been established long before I even know what MTG was. I also really enjoyed your stories and the messages behind them. If only more people (including parents) were as accepting of people no matter what their interests, personalities, choices, etc as your dad and you are. Thanks for all the great videos and I look forward to seeing more of them!

Professor, I know that you will probably never see this due to the fact that this is a three year old video, but I just need to comment on how much you are an inspiration to me. In a day where it is hard sometimes to take pride in calling myself a magic player due to the toxicity from the fanbase that has come up as a result of wizards' increased attempts at inclusivity, you are a constant shining example of the good that can exist in this community. As I study to become an English teacher myself like you once were (only high school level unfortunately not a member of the college like you haha) I can only hope I am as encouraging and welcoming of an educational figure as you have been. Even though I picked my major before i started playing magic or found out about your channel, you have still had a huge influence on me. I work at an elementary afterschool program and one of the things I do there is run a magic club, teaching kids from 3rd to 5th grade to play. After watching your video on parents reacting to magic, its honestly something I wish I could play to all of those kids parents. It's a fantastic video, and what I thought to be my favorite of yours, until I saw this. This video hit me particularly close to home, since I grew up in a household that has been less that supportive of me or my atypical interests my entire life, as well as in a school where I was bullied and blamed for it by the teachers like you. As you described, growing up in a world where you feel like no one understands or cares about you was tough as I grew up. But it was through things like magic that I got as close as I have been to my now best friend. Magic can save a life in the right situation at the right time.
Long story short, across your whole channel but especially in these two videos, you inspire me to be a great teacher as well as a better parent than I got growing up. Professor, you are the best!

Really enjoyed this video, as someone who somewhat suppressed who I was for quite some time this video hits close to home as it does to many others. Ended up getting into drugs and alcohol as an escape. Took me many years to find myself and to this day I'm still sorta searching. To any young ones out there be yourself and most Importantly LOVE yourself. If you don't love you it's hard for anyone else to.

  • @ty_sylicus
    @ty_sylicus Před 9 lety

Professor, sir, you are amazing. This video is almost like a coming out. I admire your outpouring of support.
I can very much relate to you as a boy. I was an only child, mostly raised by my somewhat distant grandparents. I too felt the desire to be different, for the sake of being different. I decided that if I was to have no friends and be alone, then I would learn to love myself. I would embrace every flaw, even the ones I couldn't fix. I've always been so stubborn -- a trait of many in my family.
In middle school my refusal to fit in led to many issues. I found myself fighting a lot with other kids and even running my mouth to instigate fights. Soon I was being counseled for my anger issues. I grew aggressive in my frustration that no one seemed to understand or even try to understand WHO I was. While I was trying to be different, I was wrong for lashing out against my peers for not "getting me".
It's been a tough life for me. I still have trouble being too loud, too weird, or just to aggressive. The biggest difference is that I've learned to never lay a hand on another person. This doesn't make my harsh words any easier though.
Magic has been such a help to me. Allowing me to bond with a variety of different guys, and various ages and walks of life. The game has variation, much like those who become a part of it. And although my wife will likely never get it, she supports my crayz obsession. Ha.

Well ... this is why I always love going to the card shop - seeing and interacting with other people who share the love for MTG with me I feel like I'm not alone. It might be weird but right now I don't think I have any friend left because of the fact that we driffted away from each other - we started going to colleges in diferent cities and never had a chance to meet in last two years ... Right now only when I go to the card shop I feel like I belong somewhere and this is why I love MTG. This is also why I think about making some youtube videos that will be tutorials for MTG but in my native language.

This is one of your best videos! Thank you for this, professor. It's ok to like sports, but people need to understand it is ok to not like them too. In fact, it's boring to see how most people are compelled to be exactly like each other, liking the same things and rejecting everyone who isn't part of that "standard" group (no pun with the standard format intended).

What a wonderful story to hear!
I did teared up when i watching it due to the fact that i lost my father recently, and almost having the same experience that you had. Near his final month we would be up all night as he watch me speed play my magic deck and later on asking about what it was about and how to play it. Those were my best moments times i ever had with my father. Now in going to cry some more in the other room.
My question for you is will you ever have some sort of google hangout or raidcall with fans to discuss magic related topic, or to get to know your fans even more. I enjoy your podcast with mana source.
P.S good luck on the booster box!!!
