- The Reinkstone R1 is brand new 10.1 inch e-note and e-reader that is using a different type of color e-paper. This is the first product ever to use DES Slurry, which is a true alternative to E INK. In this review we look at the industrial design, UI, menus, note taking experience, reading ebooks, apps and give you our thoughts if it is a good investment or not.
It is not available for purchase yet, but you can get all other color e-Readers here:

Hey everyone... So they said they will push an update so we will do an updated video in a few days!
I'm particulary interested if the 'updated software' is also making sure the 'ghosting' is less.. that would be pretty awesome if they can make it faster and cleaner.
Yes, they say updates will be available every 14 days.
This comment is one week old they said they waited a week for an update originally which puts two weeks and I still haven't seen anything so I'm wondering when will be update actually happen, will it happen?
@@robertalatalo5904 I got this email from them. Next update on July 10 th.

I'm still so blown away by any sort of consumer focused colored e-ink/slurry. I've been using a Sony Digital Paper for the last few years and absolutely love it for how easy it is on the eyes after long hours. I can't wait until I can get a color E-ink display for my computer, it'd make work so much easier on my eyes.
Totally, they've been so popular, that since they came out last year, there's been one device released a month every month for the past 13 months LOL
Let's see if we can keep the trend going!
Thank you for these anticipated review. Guess my choice would be between remarkable 2 and supernote ax5. I can't bear the ghostings and lag of that device. Will put out of my pledge.
Boox note air is better btw.
Great review! I also like that you have so many great contacts
Hello friend! Thank you for the video. Im pretty much buying this for the ereading and you say the staining is a problem, is there a way to turn up the refresh to counter the staining?
I am one of the first kickstart supporters of this project. We just received an email showing videos with the latest update and it looks very promising. Much responsive than what is shown in this video.
Could you show how things might look like running OneNote? Please and thank you!
Based on the Kickstarter page, the device has a quad core processor and 4 GB RAM. Looking at the highly unresponsive UI and general choppiness, they still have a LOT to optimize.
Would be great to see more experienced companies, like Onyx or Boyue, to jump on the bandwagon and release DES versions of their already established products, even as a tech demo. Comparing only the displays pros- and cons would be much easier that way.
And as always, thanks for the review.
I agree! Onyx has a great UX and Boyue is kinda behind them, with Reinkstone being behind Boyue.
(Edit: UX, not just UI)
It's a pretty old processor. Not sure if optimization will solve it
How much of it is it just e-ink refresh screen? I mean one of those $100 dollar tablets run better screen refresh rates
SO can you use the eraser on the other pencils? Like the black remarkable pen? The ones without extra buttons
Very nice device! Really beauty screen!! Great review, thanks!
Also, which large ereader would you suggest just for readying ebooks?
Guess I'll wait for a large (10 inches) Boox one instead ...
Which color epaper is the best as a graphic tablet in your opinion?
Hi there, the screen is clearer than the boox nova 3 color? I had the chance to review the nova 3 color book and I remember that it had a terribly dark screen compared to a normal black and white e-ink tablet. Apologize my bad english.
Can you describe what the texture of the writing surface is like compared to the reMarkable 1 and reMarkable 2 for example?
@P S Thanks, yes I have a reMarkable, I am just trying to work out how this one compares on a scale of writing on a pane of glass to writing on paper.
REINKSTONE said that good-display are just traders and didn't develop the display screen. Any thoughts on that?
Can you recommend a color e-ink type device for color comic book reading?
can I write with the pencil on an ePub? or just PDF? Thank you
Why is there a Black&White mode? for a black n white text, is there any noticable difference between colour mode and b&w mode?
B&w mode has twice the resolution of color
Can we side load APK in Boox Nova 3 color?
Curious if you’ve heard anything from this company lately? They’ve got MIA on all their social media and the Kickstarter backers were supposed to be sent their Reinkstone this month.
As one of the only channels to receive one for review on CZcams (and 22k view just on this video) I would imagine y’all definitely helped get Reinkstone backers (I got mine because of your review, specifically), so maybe they’ll respond to you? I’m sure a lot of your subscribers would appreciate it if you tried 🙏✌️
The only thing lacking for e-ink is the colour vibrancy. E-ink has announced their new in-cell touch display which would improve in this area. I am looking forward to the next gen devices from Boox. That hopefully will finally deliver a good reading experience for colour or black and white.
Thanks for the review! I'm pretty on the fence about this one. The price is competitive, and i really want a no-eyestrain option for reading large page-size pdfs.
Also, weird question, where did you get the earring on the side of your left ear? I've wanted one like that for a while, but I don't know what to call them!
Does it have any handwriting recognition?
How bright is 'white' or background compared to kaleido 2 devices
But how long did they send you the product?
I have only one email from them stating that the order is confirmed, but no shipment.
Reinkstone store does not respond to emails or messages on facebook. Won't it be a scam?
My reinkstone came in a few days ago and it's a decent product. I'm not sure if the final version feels different then your but I'm enjoying mine.
Is it compatible with OneNote?
Does the black and white ghost?
Can you show us a browser? Thanks!
Thank you for this illuminating review. As it stands right now, the reinkstone package does not convince me. They have presented a review version that only works half way, there have been no software updates for several weeks, their marketing and website presentation is certainly incomplete.... I would look into it with the launch of an r2, not before. The idea may be good, but so far not convincing: I like your analogy of a bathtub, Peter, for the way the screen is refreshed; I assume you'd need more powerful hardware to prevent this heavy staining/ghosting. Nope, not for me.
If Zack Snyder chose the color palette for an e-ink reader. 😂😂😂
Nice review. I think you hit the main point which most color e-ink enthusiasts are still waiting for, which is clear, vibrant colors. And his just doesn’t have it.
Yes, the iPad gets washed out in direct daylight, but that’s rare for me, and the 95% of the time I’m using it out of direct sunlight, the colors are beyond amazing, plus it’s got real art apps, so I’ll be sticking with iPads for the foreseeable future.

So what do you want? Do you want us to do a 37 minute video?
We are the only third party reviewer of this in the entire world so I would follow the whole beggars can't be choosers mentality when watching our content
Just relax, and for the 27th time, we are doing an updated video once this gets updated
@@goodereader I know. It was intended to be humorous, not to upset you. I enjoyed the video and learned quite a bit from it.
no SD card slot :'(
Doesn't seem very reader friendly. The background is pretty dark while the set around the device is well luminated.
TECHNICALLY Cintiq EMR doesn't work on Bamboo EMR devices. They operate on different frequencies.
Hi,
Is this avilable now or it is just a scam?
Being as involved as we are in the e-reader world, we've only heard a handful of people actually receive their units, it is still hard to say
Any word from the company? Last they said was it will be shipped in January. But, now their not even replying to emails.
It should be clear by now that there won’t be any further updates or emails. Sorry to break it to all of us. But dems da breaks.
8:02 I wanted to start singing "Take on Me" or something. :)
I would be keen to see Google Translate and Google Maps on this...
In other news, they have said it's against their policy to release the kernel source code and drivers as per the GPLv2... So this device isn't even released yet and it's based on theft of intellectual property.
I think I'll be sticking to my amazing Remarkable 2
Why not Onyx Boox Note Air or Note 3?
Too bad it's not A4 size screen or at least close to it. For e-readers nowadays, the most overlooked use is the ability to read textbooks, which require a screen size of 12-13.3" (look at Max Lumi). As the refresh rate is too low for users to comfortably reposition within a single page, its screen size must be large enough to display the whole page at once.
I lost trust in their technical abilities when it comes to the much needed refinement. This is why I backed out of the kickstarter campaign. A somewhat petty example: look at their crappy "Meet the Team" video.. Also, they avoid answering virtually any questions regarding hardware or software developement (but not like "we know, we just don't want to tell you" but rather "we have no idea what you are talking about"); almost every technical suggestion from their backers gets ignored. They also made no campaign goals public (i.e. improvements on the backlight, casing color choices, different processors, different storage), which let's me think that they wouldn't be able to implement those improvements anyway. My uneducated guess: they heavily rely on r&d from other companies, just recycled what they had left from their E-PAD disaster, took some new (standard) components like the new DES screen and somewhat try to make it work...
Your reviews are excellent, however the background music is too loud in comparison to your voice, so playing the video louder does not help as that also increases that distracting background music which is becoming the worst part of the video.
I agree with your comment that people do not like to see parts edited out. That is true.
Sorry, got out of 2,500 plus videos, the vast majority of people request and approve of the BG music
But thank you
The vast majority likes our videos
If you don't like our videos you don't have to watch them. Thank you
Can you explain this a bit better than calling it a bathtub?
Hi, handsome. A hello from Brazil!
Gay
So we have to wait for the real thing.
This is correct, they have pushed an OTA update, so we will update our unit, test it, and then do an updated video very soon for everybody :-)
@@goodereader good, what does 100 hrs stand by really mean.
The panel is legit how ever the guy they associated whit is not trust wordy .
care to elaborate?
@@DaKussh the other company he was in it called Epaperer read the comment on kicstarter. it was a scam never arrived product. not existing support and they gone after they got the money. not in mine life i gonna trust this guys
we’re a few months away from the release. It’s inappropriate to call this a review for unfinished product.
the ghosting is so terrible....
what kind of psychopath thinks that e-ink is appropriate in any way for watching video or animation? LMAO
The screen didn't look that great anyway
Can we stop using Apple's terminology 'sideloading' to describe the ages old computer activity we all enjoy and call 'installing software we want'? :)
Just give me this, I'll read the whole library of books in human history, in all languages. I promise!

BTW, why so many ebook reviews bring up "video" on these devices? Who cares for video? If that's the case, get an iPad!
its interesting to see how far these devices are from tablets; because many ppl want to use them as eye-friendly replacement for incumbent displays
I sort of agree, but I guess its important to show the average person who don't know epaper well. Look at how many people in the Reinkstone Community page ask how video and video games will play on this, these people need to be informed.
Also look at how well the latest Onyx Mira computer monitors can play video, it's pretty amazing. Based on what I can see from the Mira monitor it looks like eink is on the verge of being able to play videos decently, so we may see more of this in reviews
