The color scheme works BECAUSE.....Blah blah blah something art student-y that equals a tertiary color scheme~ I love this soap. Potentially my favorite one you've EVER made!.....and that's a pretty difficult choice to make, honestly~
I wish more folks had your mentality on the "copy cat" issue. I had my confidence destroyed many years ago by an artist bigger than me because of a witch hunt. I had no idea who this person was, yet thousands were rallying with her in a design I had made claiming it was a copy. I have never been able to design yet alone look at my work the same again. The thought I would be "copying" someone inadvertently has destroyed my love of art. It's nice to see you encouraging folks to use that energy to create, not destroy.
As a fellow artist, I understand. I've seen so many things, sometimes an idea pops in my head and I have no idea who to credit with the idea. But in a small community I belong to we play a game where we "copy" somebody else's work on purpose. It really helps when your creativity is lagging. It's Layout tag. One person is keeper, they select a page layout and message it to the first person. They use it for inspiration for their page. Some copy it almost exactly, some use an element or two. They send it to the keeper, who sends your work to the next person, and theirs to the third, and so on. After the last person sends theirs in, the keeper displays them all, in order. It's really cool to see the progression.

Hey Krys, I don’t know you or what art you do but you and your art IS 👏🏻 VALID 👏🏻 witch hunts are awful and there’s too much cancel culture out there which breaks my heart because it scares away sooo many beautiful people from doing amazing art and things they love. We as a society need to address this more and put a stop to it. Why does the orange work in this palette?
HERE’S WHY: This is approximately a Triadic color scheme with yellow-orange, red-violet, and blue-green. Nudging the cyan/blue-green a little more towards pure blue also gives you a complimentary color scheme with the orange. The addition of the lavender also sneaks in a split-complimentary as well. Basically every color in this palette is working equally hard to support and elevate each other. Without the orange you lose a key component making the colors not feel as vibrant an punchy. Moral of the story, Orange is good.

@@ariana1042 Simpler explanation: Blue and purple are next to (analogous) each other on the color wheel. They kind of "blend" together because they're in the same color family but don't grab much attention on their own. The use of orange fits because it is opposite (complementary) of blue on the color wheel, and the contrast from opposing color pairings is very eye-catching. Katie used two different color wheel techniques together with great success ✌

I dare say "It is yours"! It's a good statement for WAY more than soap making. So it might be best to make it pleasantly graphic without much relation to soap (except your logo of course!). You are pleasant and positive and inspirational, and yes I am one of those subscribers that loves to watch you make soap even though I don't. Although I would love to someday. I just have to say that Katie’s spirit of kindness and generosity was such a huge factor in encouraging me to start making soap. There is so much gate keeping in any form of crafting that it’s so delightful and refreshing to see someone being so welcoming and encouraging.

I followed 6 soap makers for at first. One of them said in a video “please don’t copy me, come up with your own design” and now I follow 5 soap makers.

There is nothing wrong in not wanting to be copied, but as Katie was saying, you can't remember everything you've seen, so if you're in the same creative community, not watching folks who expressly say 'don't copy me' can save you a lot of drama down the road if you independently have a similar idea. You can't have copied what you have not seen. As a hobbyist writer, I can't begin to count the number of stories I've started then read a book after I'd come up with my idea and started writing only to find out the stories were similar enough to make me uncomfortable continuing the story, even just for me. There are only so many ideas to come up with before they become variations on each other. So, while there's nothing wrong with not wanting to be copied, there's also nothing wrong with not wanting to take the chance that someone may claim you've copied them and having it look credible if the reality is that you use similar techniques and have a style that's independently similar. Art theft is a serious thing, but for every person who doesn't want to be copied, I have no doubt that at least one of their art pieces somewhere is appreciably similar to one that came before. They may very well not have seen that piece, but unless they have less than five to ten pieces, it's much more likely that it does exist than it doesn't.

Looks the colors of early dusk. Just after the sun sets and the sky is starting to darken. The yellow of the sunset is gone but the gradient is there. I looove it!

When I first started soap making (for craft only) I made a gingerbread soap to give as gifts. I had a person criticize the soap because she had seen your channel and accused me of copying. It was my first ever high top soap and I was so darn proud of it! And i was so crushed. Needless to say I never gave her a gift again.
Did she not realize that Katie basically gives the recipe for others to try and probably recreate or alter for personal use. I bet the soap you made was beautiful and wonderfully crafted.
That's just absurd, especially since you were giving your creations as gifts and not selling them. How else are people supposed to learn if not by watching others? You don't just create an original masterpiece overnight.
Has that person never seen Pinterest before? Copying designs is super common when someone is just doing it as a hobby.

I really just love how positive and encouraging you are towards other soapers new and old. I too have had moments where I've thought of a cool design that I was super excited about, only to see it's already been done by someone else and therefore, afraid to make it and sell.
I think this color pallet would be perfectly completed with a happy and bright but still earthy green! There's always beautiful grass and greenery and leaves in a field of flowers! :)

The orange absolutely works, it's opposite blue on the colour wheel so they are complementary colours. I'm loving this soap!!!
I’m a florist and this design stealing thing is huge in floristry but like you said, we all make similar things all the time. There’s a huge difference between somebody making something similar or even copying your work, to somebody that will steal your pictures etc and outright claiming your work as their own.
I have the attitude to other florists as you have to other soap makers. There’s room for us all!

I love your out look on “copying”. I wish everyone had this outlook!
I love hearing your opinion about the whole "copycat" thing. When I made soap back in the day and then for awhile was involved in a different artisan product industry, I noticed a lot of "this person copied me" behavior and it frustrated me. There are only so many colorants available, and so many combinations of those colorants, and sometimes, the scents we use inspire certain color palettes and that's okay for artists to have the same idea from that. And the idea that artisan makers should be competing with each other is sort of toxic. One soap maker cannot possibly make enough soap to wash the world. And artists as a whole should always be here to lift each other up. I knew you would agree, I've been watching you as long as you've been on YT, so when I had no doubts this video would be so open and welcoming. You've always be such a soap community activist and I'm so here for it.
I did a festival last year there was 2 soap makers me and a crazy chick. Came over and started telling at me. I gave her a sample soap and told her I have no idea who are...therefore I did not copy you. We both had in the pot swirls and I had bath salts and flower soaps. Both different colors. Even a customer said that lady needs medication. I reached out to her after the event bought her a soda and told her instead of screaming at ppl you should compliment them. The way I handled her brought me more business than her. I totally identified with what Katie said.
Honestly with artistic hand crafted things like this, even if someone purposely tries to copy someone else, it won't look exactly the same. Heck, every bar in THE SAME BATCH looks different. By the way, this soap is absolutely gorgeous.
My attitude is imitation is the best form of flattery.

The color palette gives me major Cheshire Cat/Alice in Wonderland vibes. Kind of whimsical, kind of trippy, but it works very well.
It also works for Tangled. It really is a very "Disney" combo, all around.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Preach. There is already so much negativity in the world without making people scared to create art or have an idea that *might* be similar to someone else's.
Also, the orange works because it's opposite blue on the color wheel. Mixed together, it'll turn a muddy brown. Next to each other, it complements it. Same as purple and yellow or green and red.

So I'm an amateur soap maker and I stress all the time about offending someone so I hesitate on a lot of ideas I have. So I just wanted to thank you for that lovely uplifting speech 🥰 It makes me feel better that there are soap makers out there who won't get angry if I do end up accidentally creating a soap similar to theirs. The color palette is perfect!! It's what you would find in a wild nature garden or any garden. I don't think I've ever heard of a flower saying you don't match the color scheme here.lol. Would we all just mimic nature. Love all your stuff btw. Your so very inspirational. Thank you.

Orange and blue always work well because they are complementary colours ! That's a bold choice but always very rewarding
The color palette made total sense to me right away.
You could pair any of those colors up with another one of the colors in your design and it looks good. Makes sense that all together they're fabulous!

Orange is a contrast color to those complimentary colors, love! It looks amazing! If you ever have trouble with colors, which it doesn't seem like you do, but it might be useful to print out a color chart! It has definitely helped having my cheat sheet, every now and then, lol.
I love how positive, supportive, and kind hearted you are. It really helps to lift my fog of depression and doubt and inspires me to create; even though my craft doesn't (currently) include soap! So thank you! And keep shining beautifully, inside and out! 💖💜💙🧡💐
Exactly. But, the more I watch the more I think I'd like making soap. Lol Then I have to remind myself that I have an expensive hobby already. And remind myself how much I have invested in it.
This soap turned out so beautiful! There was a tiny bit of orange in the flowers she sprinkled, and it pulled it all together!

Thank you for that speech, Katie. I point this out all the time about CZcams and small shop creators. Frequently, the people who are screaming "they copied me!" are just being prideful and looking for a witch hunt. The artistic community (which I'm including you in) is *HUGE!* To have a tantrum that somebody copied you, when (as you pointed out) they probably have never even heard of or seen your work, is simply childish and absolutely unnecessary. We live in a society that thrives off drama, and some of us just don't have time for it.

Honestly as an artist I always vocalize the fact no idea is 100% original. Inevitably even the most creative person will take inspiration from things around them to develop their art.
Also with how many artists there are in the world you’re bound to have similar designs to someone! Your subconscious isn’t helpful either because you could see a cute frog drawing and then several months later you forgot about that drawing but now you have doodles of cute frogs because it makes you happy

The color pallet looks like an Arizona sunset right after a monsoon. Sunset colors are always my favorite combo.
