    It feels like my brain was taken out of my head, without my knowledge, and it’s been spinning around on your desk like a crystal ball as you talked to us gentleness, time, feeling like you're nerfed when you start something new again after reeling from the high of a more polished project, and just about everything in-between. Which is to say, I relate with this. A lot.
    Pardon my language, but shit changes after university, huh? 🤣 Energy is not the same. Writing is not the same. Having to relearn and remind yourself that you've got to be nice with yourself. Then trying to squirrel away your energy and creativity between other routines and priorities that make you think...shit. And that's the daily struggle, that really makes you got to take things once day at a time and learn to celebrate the small stuff in life. Because it's small, but it's not unimportant when you're living life.
    Writing has been well. June marked a new strive where I just dropped a lot of things I used to worry about with my writing, and I feel a substantial in my stories now. Not just in quality and experimentation, but the reading experience too and the kind of stories I'm letting myself tell. Of course, I experience the usual nerf of thinking I'm back to level one as a writer when I start a new project after finishing the last one. But that's just part of it as you're pulling teeth to draft something you'll have fun revising. And life is going okay. It could be better, but it's okay.
    Things are still hard, and can still be as hard as I let them be, but I'm still doing what I can and finding fun along the way. And it sounds like you're getting there, too. At your own pace. And that's good, that's real good I think.

    a few years ago, i went through the exact same thing with my chronic pain, and it’s an incredibly difficult thing to adjust to. i’m not sure how helpful this may be, but you aren’t alone in your experiences. i hope life eases up soon and you’re able to see less doctors (i see more doctors than i see friends 🥴).

    Congratulations again on 8K subs! I could only hang out in your livestream for about 15 minutes last week, but it was fun! Chronic pain and fatigue are so hard to deal with. I went through a really bad year of it a few years ago. Please be gentle with yourself. I so appreciate your honesty when talking about disability stuff as I am disabled myself and a full-time wheelchair user (might be autistic, definitely ADHD). I’m so impressed by how much you’ve written in the last 10 years and it’s so interesting to hear you talk about your journey, struggles and all. I definitely hadn’t found my voice as a screenwriter and fiction writer in my 20s, only now in my 30s, so I’m really amazed by your span of so many different projects and genres. I’m excited for the sequel to SEVENTH VIRTUE if you decide to write that. And for the rest of HALLOWED BODIES!
    I have book recs for you if you want them! 🥰
    ONE FOR ALL by Lillie Lainoff (my friend/critique partner’s book, YA, disability/POTS rep)
    THE SUMMER OF BITTER AND SWEET/THESE PINK MOUNTAIN NIGHTS by Jen Ferguson (YA contemporary, another friend of mine, she’s a Canadian Métis author)
    A PRAYER FOR VENGEANCE by Leanne Schwartz (YA fantasy with autistic rep, forthcoming in September)
    UNSEELIE by Ivelisse Housman (YA fantasy with autistic rep)
    BEING ACE: AN ANTHOLOGY OF QUEER, TRANS, FEMME, AND DISABLED STORIES OF ASEXUAL LOVE AND CONNECTION edited by Madeline Dyer (forthcoming on October 10th, I have a story in here!)

    I can relate to having to accept reality with chronic pain & fatigue. It's hard, and you're doing great to be adjusting your expectations whilst still finding a way to do what you love. I'm 48 and still figuring this out! My writing has been on hold while I focus on art, but I hope my brain lets me write again soon.

    2 weeks!! Ive gone years without. Yeah, i definitely wrote more and faster when i was younger. I stopped completely for a while. Started back pre-pqndemic, slowly but surely.

    These real talks are so cathartic to listen to, congrats on the 8k btw!! And I'm so so sorry about your dog, since I've got one recently I can finally relate to how soul-healing they are, on another note I'm so glad you've been able to take a step back and push through your difficulties with HB, I'm a bit biased 'cause I've fallen in love (metaphorically ofc lol) with Lonan in FH and I can't get enough of his boring wandering, though BB Harrison is sooo fun too eheh I've been having a struggle recently with how to balance editing (one project) and drafting another, since when I'm in drafting mode I want to be like "go, go, go" but on the other side I don't really feel like ending up next year w/ two 100k books to edit ahhhh so I've been wondering how you tend to proceed when you're both editing and writing? (pls don't tell me you don't manage anything tho I relate lmao)

    This was such a great video. It's amazing to hear about a writer who's autistic and has chronic pain and who talks about the reality of what that means for their life and writing. Thank you so much for sharing this video! I absolutely loved it

      @rachelwritesbooks  Před rokem +2

      ahh I'm happy you enjoyed!! I'll continue to talk about both (I talk about the autism end more than the chronic pain) but I think it's really nice to know there are other writers going through similar things, which is why I want to share more!

    Hell yeah to the self-compassion! I had an unfortunately bad reaction to the latest antidepressant I tried so I'm really working on that being gentle with myself-ness-- I really want to get back to writing even though my creative juices still feel all dried up!! But I can't rush it, I can just hang tight and try to take care of myself so that I can get back to that space eventually. Sending lots of love!
