Gil Perrault was the Buffalo Sabres. His beauty was h9s humbleness. Todays athletes could stand to learn that from him.

Many hockey fans think that Bobby Orr was the greatest player of his era or possibly of all time (including me). But if you ask Bobby Orr who he thinks was the best player he played against, he'll answer Gilbert Perreault.
Wayne Gretzky , Bobby Hull, Guy Lafleur, Mario Lemieux all said the same thing

Gil was electrifying. One of the few skaters that pulled me out of my seat. AMAZING in any decade!
I was lucky enough to see him at the end of his career several times at the Aud. When he took the puck from behind the net the crowd would just rise. He was so smooth and fast.
I was the born year he retired. Missed out. Well I seen him play at an alumni game lol. The goal at 2:05 looked exactly like a Mario goal. His fake shot to the backhand looked like Gretzky. Great skater. Small market tho. I am happy to have been old enough to see patty Lala and mogilny at the aud a bunch of times.

My all time favorite player, his name plays like music in my head. Thanks for posting this--so many memories and such an amazing player and great guy.

He was great! Those were the days of hockey in Buffalo. I never missed a game back then! Nowadays, the calibre of the players are so different! I loved "The French Connection"!
Get yourself a copy of the 1976 Canada Cup, and see Orr, Perreault, LaFleur, Sittler, etc. all skating on the same team - now THERE'S a treat :)
Someone needs to find highlights of him on a line with Lafleur and Gretzky at the 1981 Canada Cup. Until he broke his leg in the tourny, Canada looked unbeatable.
Man, Legends Like These guys make people like me love the game of hockey. This guys had incredible hands, man!
Gilbert Perreault is one of the top 4 or 5 most underrated players of all time in my opinion. Had he played for Montreal or Toronto, he would easily be remembered among the greats like Lafleur and Sittler. The year he was drafted (first overall of course), was the first time that Montreal did not have the reserved right to pick the highest touted French Canadian player, so had Perrault been eligible one year earlier, he would have played for Montreal!

Perreault truly was a franchise player in more ways than one, even though Buffalo never won a Stanley Cup. Awesome clips...miss those classic old uniforms!

The "Sabre Dance" (Armenian: Սուսերով պար Suserov par) is a movement in the final act of the ballet Gayane, written by Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian and completed in 1942.
The National Hockey League team Buffalo Sabres uses the piece as a theme song.
Look up Sabre Dance on wikipedia. Sheesh, the video is about Gil Perreault, his skills, and the only NHL team he played for.
I was in college at the University of Buffalo at the time of the French Connection's prime. Their games were always on TV. (Along with Montreal and Toronto which we got on Hockey Night in Canada!) What a joy it was to watch first-hand. Perrault was the closest thing to Bobby Orr for the way he could skate end to end with the puck. As soon as he touched the puck behind the Buffalo goal, the hair on the back of your neck went on end wondering what would happen next.
His slap shot was awesome..
Lucky indeeed!!!....Although a Habs fun I really liked the sabres and was bummed when they lost in the finals to Philly...wish they would return to theyre original unifroms they were classic...Ive been fortunate also to attend many NHL games in many different arenas...and saw the French Connection at their best.

He won the Calder Trophy in 1971 and Lady Bing Trophy in 1973. He played five All star-games.
Was Chosen in tho the Hall of fame in 1990.
I always loved the fact that he didn't act like he just won the Stanley Cup when he scored. In fact he didn't celebrate much at all. Humble...

OMG! Watching this was like being 17 again! Watching Gil move on the ice.... ugh, I'm in love all over again. My girlfriends and I were in LOVE with him - joined his fan club and wore everything Perreault in 1975. It's so good seeing him in some of the interviews. He's even better looking now. Living in Syracuse, NY now we recently had our open air pond hockey game. Danny Gare was there along with Rob Ray. Gil - come out of retirement already and show your face! You are missed.
Grew up watching the French Connection out of Quebec. Some tough guys, and awesome hockey in the 70's.
Still remember Ted Darling days on the radio..."...Now here comes Perreault...gets by one...sidesteps another...to the blue line...splits the defense...he shoots..he scores!!!!!"
I grew up a Ranger fan and hated watching him beat us every year. The semis in 79 were the only time the Rangers prevailed. But he was amazing...no question. And yes, it was his back - he was only 30 when he retired. He could very possibly be the all time goal leader if he had held on for another 7 or 8 years. 573 goals in 752 games...that's just brutal.

Saw Gilbert in 68 at the old Forum as a Baby Hab (Montreal Jr. Canadiens). He was great. We knew he would be one of the best ever. And he was. Such a pleasure to watch. . .
This was the hockey l grew up with and loved and miss!!! End to end rushes deaks stick handling between guys...today it's all quick passes...maybe smarter team hockey now but l miss the end to end stuff with Orr and Perreault

My Hero Growing up was #16 Pat LaFontaine, but my parents always told me stories of "the greatest of all Sabres", the man, the myth, the legend, Mr. Gilbert Perreault. It's so great to see these highlights!!

nice upload. ever notice how gilbert hits the blueline then "gains the halfboards" just level or above the faceoff dot , then makes a play. Mario did this also.

In my head I can still hear Milt Ellis say Buffalo goal his 28th of the season scored by number 11 Gilbert Perreault assist by number 7 Rick Martin and number 14 Rene Robert... Perreault from Martin and Robert time 14:37...damn onions got to my eyes again...

Any goalie today also has pads that cover about 300% more of the net than back in the 70's. Give Bernie Parent, Eddie Giacomin or Ken Dryden a catching glove the size of a fishing net and see what would have happened. Ask Jose Theodore himself if he thinks he's a better goalie than Kenny Dryden was, and see what he says...
Same here! I am from Fort Erie and had the same experience as a kid watching the Sabres. Perreault was my guy. I just had the chance to meet Bert at an oldtimers game last year. Still my hero and a great guy. Please post more of his stuff if possible.
Ever notice that Perreault and Orr were both bow legged skaters? It makes a difference!

Bobby Orr wrote in his book that the defenseman should look at the chest of the forward - he can't move to the different direction. The only exception to this rule - says Bobby - is Gilbert Perrault.

One of my best childhood memories of hockey was going downtown to Chicago Stadium - man, was that place loud! - and watching the Hawks play the Sabres. Perrault belongs among the game's pantheon of elite scorers and playmakers; his moves were amazing. The late Rick Martin had a bomb of a slapshot, and was a reliable scorer in his prime. I won't ever forget the 1975 Stanley Cup Final, when guys with bedsheets had to come out on the ice and try to clear the fog!

Perreault would be awesome if he played today. Vastly underrated player. One of the elites of his generation. Give him some of these new skates and look out, he'd still be one of the best skaters in the league. Should add that ridiculous goal he scored at the Canada Cup in 76.

A slap shot from Bobby Hull was every bit as potent as one from Al Macinnis. The legal clutching and grabbing as well as the neutral zone trap throughout the 90's was the largest reason for the lack of scoring. What you're saying would be like saying today's goal scorers aren't as talented as the guys in the 70's. It's absurd. What the rules will allow is what's changed. They all know or knew how to shoot and stop pucks. Gretzky never would have scored 92 in this age...there's simply less net.
Gilbert was the best at the time.....he actually looks like a modern player of today.....always wore number 11 on the rink...
It is tough to compare players from different eras, but the greats from the past would have been dominant in today's game, had they grown up in it as modern players have done. The reverse is also true; today's best would have done well back in the old days. Goalies and position players from the old days look slow in comparison to today's players, but bear in mind that almost every aspect of the game has benefited from advances in tech - from pads to sticks to the ice itself.

It goes even further, though...the butterfly was definitely a style that evolved during an era when goalies finally felt "safe". Let's face it...with good reason, none of these goalies with skimpy pads and in many cases, no or little face protection probably wouldn't have been too comfortable with the butterfly style. It's just the way it was. Even the term "he's a stand-up goaltender" is extinct. But, hey...what do we know besides actually seeing past and present players play.

Gilbert Perreault...He had many end-to-end rushes. He was so good. One of the all-time greats.
Buffalo got Perreault, Vancouver got Dale Tallon.
His 250th goal was arguably the best goal of all time.
Being drug down from behind, he deeked the goalie with one hand on stick and scored.
I think another player in that "under-rated" category was Mike Bossy. He played on Long Island during that dynasty, but his name doesn't come up a lot with hockey fans. And I think you're right - when Cesar Maniago, Ron Low and Les Binkley have jobs playing goal in the NHL, then there was probably some dilution of the talent pool due to expansion. I wonder when they're finally going to put pads on some 500 lb. guy and lay him in front of the net, and call him the greatest of all time.
Perreault was probably the greatest individual skater and stickhandler off all time in the NHL for forwards. He was quick, he could move laterally and had a deceptively hard and accurate shot. Gretzky was not the skater Gilbert was nor had the speed. Perreault was much more shity a forward-he deserves a lot more credit than he already obviously got but he was one of hockey's all time greats!!!
because Dryden's the goalie Perreault scored against in the goal you're talking about. Look him up, and see if he was a bad goalie...6 cups in 8 years and a career 2.24 gaa with a record of 258-57-74 says otherwise.

Dudes, Gilbert Perreault was one of those guys who didn't care about statistics, Yeah 500 goals and 1,300 Points is amazing, no question, but he had the ability to score 1,500 Goals and 3,900 points, but he didn't want to look too flashy, and so he used 1/3 of his abilities, and that is a perfect example of a team player, he wanted the best for his team, and his did whatever he could to make it happen, and if you ask me, he did a great job of that

As much as I've been a hockey/Habs fan since I was 6 y.o., I will admit to not having been cool enough to know that this particular tune was called "Sabre Dance", nor that it was the team's official song....! Thanks for the info, TotallyProductions...! Going to sleep a little smarter tonite!! =)

In addition to better, lighter equipment - the average player today has the benefit of state-of-the-art coaching and player development, such as computerized analysis, video, statistical work, and so on. Conditioning and diet are much improved, almost no one in the game today smokes or drinks to excess as the guys did back then. Medical care is fifty years better. Bobby Orr's knees could have been saved - or replaced - in today's game. But make no mistake - the greats of yesteryear were titans.

There was no player on other teams that Sam Pollock wanted more than Gilbert Perreault. Imlach of Buffalo wouldn't even consider it for a second!
Gilbert did not have the skills of Bobby Orr,but nobody,nobody had his skating hability.Ask to players like Bobby Clark,Gretzky,they all will tell you that Perreault was the best skater in the game,easily...In the summit series of 72,the soviets were impressed by this young french canadian with absolutly insane skills.

I was at the game (I was 8) but I can't remember if it was the same game he scored #500, or if it was a later game. If I remember correctly, they drove a car out on the ice with the license plate "GIL 500".
Gilbert Perrault was a better hockey player than Bobby Clarke, yet Bobby hated to lose more and as a result was a better leader and won more. This is a perfect example of understanding pro hockey more than the average Joe. Sometimes being more gritty and a little less great can get you two championships in a row. I was 12 at the time, now I'm 50, so yeah it grates on me the Sabres still don't seem to have gotten the message. You have to be tough to win, some things never change!

Goalies these days are more athletic. No question about it. They have better equipment, but also flexible, acrobatic and smart. Hockey is a lot faster now (better skaters) with bigger and strong players and a lot more physical contact. It actually turned me off of hockey... especially the fighting. Don "The Hammer" Schultz was a bad boy back then, but he wouldn't stand a chance today. I preferred the cleaner play. I grew up a Blackhawk fan in the Mikita-Esposito-Bobby Hull era.
Players nowadays are trained and play a different way. To compare Max and Gil would require thinking how one of the two players would play if trained and playing in the other era, which is an effort you may never make.
A commenter on my blog said the game was a couple weeks after vs. the LA Kings, if that helps to track it down.

Perrault was amazing...unfortunately growing up I only remember the later years in the early and mid 80s...it's hilarious how bad the goalies were back then watching them versus how they are today.
