2020 and still I'm getting useful info from this video. Thanks!
so am I and I thank U as well
I love coming back to your videos to learn something new. I always do. I've been enjoying the MX-1. I've made several songs with it. Keep up the great work. Take care, Sam.
I saw your terrific TR-8 video, which motivated me to follow it with my long-neglected TR-8 that I recently pulled out for my studio desk. I knew about the pieces here and there, but you did a great job with demonstrating the use of it and following it on my device had things made more sense and made the process so much less intimidating. Great to see something similar with the MX-1, though I'll save the video to rewatch once I decide to put it on my studio desk. One thing to get through the documents, another to have a good show-and-tell session to make things feel usable. Much appreciated!
Great tutorial thanks... shed a lot of light on the different options... reading the "manual" was blowing my mind!
loving the fridge shelving ;)
thanks mate your videos are really helping me along
Hi. I watched this video about a month ago and it made me decide to buy the MX-1. I bought the MX-1 and now I've been using it for a while, I just watched the video again and picked out a few details of stuff I can try out. The different mastering modes, for example. Cheers!
It's a lot of fun huh? I couldn't imagine my setup without it now
Today I had a good beat coming out of the TR8 and a pretty bright pad playing on the System 1. Kept the chord playing continuously and turned it into a rhythmic tool with Beat FX on the MX-1. After a bit of playing around with the right steps to bring in and out on, it was sounding badass.
Thanks for the video.
Thank you. Very informative
I must make a call out to how you've got your gear setup with the cable ties (multi-color, ftw) and el cheapo wire shelving. Absolutely brilliant. It is a point of personal butthurt the amount of money I've spent working to solve this dilemma.
I love the idea that roland developed in this mixer. I have a tr 8 and a tb 3, and I'm adding more gear soon, so being able to sync all the aira stuff and another synth like you have to the mixer, without the need of a midi splitter or another box is an amazing bonus, plus you can sidechain every channel so easily.
The only thing I don't like about it, is the absence of an eq per channel...yeah you can work around this with the filter knob, but it is never the same thing as having a 3 band eq right there at your fingertips. Also, you can't route individual channels out and in to another mixer, or if you ran your gear first through a mixer and then intro the mx-1, you end up losing the sync capability...I guess you gotta make some sacrifices :)
Have you felt the need of an eq per channel when summing all the sources? Or was the "mastering" knob good enough for a live performance?
Great video and explanation! Cheers from Portugal
Really great video as always. Very in depth, right to the point and highlighting good qualities of the gear. Would you suggest this piece of equipment to a beginner for analog production purposes?
Just bought the system-8 the mx-1 and the tr-8 and having alot off fun!
How have you found that set up? It’s what I’ve ordered plus TR303
Great overview, I also enjoyed your performances! Question: when you recall a scene memory on the MX-1 does it also recall the pattern number and kit on the TR-8 that was being used, or just the settings on the MX-1?
Thanks for the info :)
good tutorial, thanks :)
Great video
hej! loved the overview, really helped to convince me to buy one... i´d though like to ask you (might seam dumb question ) how about plugging a turntable to the MX1
thanx 4 this vid
Awesome tutorial. Currently I have my Korg Minilogue hooked up from the MX1 via midi out from the MX1 and Midi into the Korg to sync the clocks. The problem I have is the faders on the MX1 are controlling the filters on my Korg synth. Is that because of a setting on the midi side of the MX1?
just got mine !! thanks for this ..you made my life easier !!
Nice video, do you have one with the MX-1 routing to Ableton Live,or what would be the best setting for the MX-1?
Great video.
Is there away to use my Safire Pro 40 as my audio interface and have the Aira gear sound coming out of the MX-1 output to Pro 40 input line?
One thing about the mastering effects that I haven't seen anyone mention in any tutorial video:
If you hold down the mastering button and turn the [Value] knob you get 65 parameters to adjust the mastering effects and the weird thing is that they are not mentioned in any of the manuals or anywhere so I don't really know what parameter does what. Any idea?
Also, if anyone doesn't know what the mastering effects are:
1: 4-band EQ
2: Low Cut
3: Enhancer
4: Splitter
5: 3-band Expander
6: 3-band Compressor
7: Mixer
8: Mid/Side Control
9: Limiter
10: Dither
I don't think this means that if you hold down [mastering] and choose 1 for example that the sound only goes through a 4-band EQ, I rather think that the sound goes through all those effects from 1-10 and the [mastering] + [tempo] knob just selects one of 10 preset combinations of those effects, but I'm not really sure because Roland really don't mention it in the manuals.
That's crazy, I just tried it and what on earth are all those options?!
Holy crap. Seriously, this needs a write-up. I found the Mastering presets but the Master+Value knob is crazy! I'm scared to touch those.
Thanks! 65 values, but with 5 to 10 sub-settings or ranges for each of those 65 values. Who knows what all of this does, exactly, but now I have a huge rabbit hole to go down and get lost in. Awesome! Thanks for this. I've only owmed this MX-1 for a few days, and it's the perfect center peice for the TR-8, TB-3, System-1, and SP-400a that I have had for a bit.
@@JarretLaMark Have you figured out something about these settings ?
cheers
Thank you brother. ~~~~
Hi , I am trying to control the tempo of the Arturia Synclavier . I have a USB connected from the pc to the usb port on the mx-1 (not the Aira ports) port. I can hear when I play notes but the Arp Tempo is unaffected. Any ideas?
Hi, very clear tutorial! I've got a question for you: is it possible to connect mx1 to Akai Force in order to use it as source of sound and sampling? I've got all Aira gears connected to it and I find useful its clock function. I've got a big lack of knowledge too about midi connection so I don't know how mix Aira with Akai. Thanks for the support
you could run main out of Mix 1 into Akai.... as far as midi.... shouldnt matter... but probally makes sense to have mx 1 as master
You'll want to do it the other way around, as per the comment above. Connect the Force to the MX1, and route the tracks from your Force through the separate channels on the MX1.
how did you find out about the combi+shuffle feature.... btw great video?
Best tutorial! Thanks
What would you recomend using in a cdj setup? The amx-1 aira or a tr-8? Just to increase the creativity in techno sets.
Hey nice review..! Can I ask - when I bring in an AIRA via usb (ie MC101 etc) do the tracks get split out on to separate mixer channels? Or is it just on one channel. Thanks!
Nice
I’m a little late on the MX-1 but always had my eye on it. Bought one as a repack from Roland. I’m having issues with the MFX function. Anytime I use it there is a significant drop in dB. Is this common?
I seem to be having the same problem. Nit sure how to fix it.
Brilliant video, thanks.
Could you please do one on how to link it to Ableton Live and the 3 MX-1 modes? I've watched a few but still can't get it working.
I recommend Ranzee’s youtube channel. He goes into great detail, at least on external mode, which is probably the most complex of all three.
If I wanted to use this with my Push 2 to record and sample sounds what mode would I use?
How do I get my MX-1 to send sound through my iPhone for Facebook live sessions? When I had my dj mixer, I had zero problems, now I am getting no sound at all with the max-1
Hi mate got the mx1 hooked up to aria gear, now all of a sudden i have no sound .im new to this thanks.
What’s the difference between this and a Soundcraft FX16ii? New to producing and finally making the decision to get a mixer and an audio interface after. But I’m just stuck on the terms of connectivity, especially with plug ins/DAWs. Besides having 12 instruments/hardware I wouldn’t like to be switching cables back and forth to play one synth. Please help if can 🤕
Do you know how to change the input level? For example if you have a mic in it. Then I use it as a input in cubase and record it.
How are you getting your system 1 to sequence? Are you using midi from your DAW or is it being controlled through the mx1 from one of the other AIRA products?
I have a quick question about this. I want to get this for my fl studio and I also have an akai midi keyboard. Will my keyboard along side with this ?.
Great video my question is how do I make my MX-1 the master I just got my gear about two weeks ago and there's so much to learn please advise me I have the whole Aira set up
+Danny B Funman If you plug your aira gear into the Mx-1 and hit 'start' it should send clock to all devices.
If i have a system-8 and an mx-1, can i have the system 8 send midi via the usb aira port to a synth plugged in on a midi port? Or do i have to not use aira for the system 8?
Love the tutorial videos! I just got the Roland Aira system.I'm trying to set up now and I noticed my TR-8 Which is running through the USB is playing much lower than the other USB plug ins. All the settings are the same as others and volume knobs. Any idea why is playing lower?
Have you tried to boost the gain?
Hi, I need help to connect the mixer with the traktor to synchronize
Do you know if there is a way for me to route the master output to the digital port
Any chance of a tutorial of hooking it up to Reaper please? 🤔🙏
Hi , are you able to record any synth via Analog input into your mx1 while using aira stuff via Usb ? For example to use two boutique synth via Analog input to mx1
Yes, the USB inputs have their own separate channels, usb3 will power a boutique, and pass audio thru. I actually have a JU-06 running on usb3, with a JX-03 running audio into the audio in, so I get both boutiques on one channel.
can you connect an turntable on the mixer? sensitivity 4 analog channels?
Hello does anyone know how to turn off the flashing on Ableton Live Mode on the MX-1 ? I have faders flashing unless I move them for empty channels. It's not the demo mode that kicks in, but if I laid a new ableton template the channel faders flash and the mute buttons. Thanks
Hi, are you still replying to technical questions on this thread please? If so I have the Mx1 mixer and it won't power up at all. It's out of warranty so I don't want to get a big bill to fix it if it is something simple.
08:44 You can hold a SELECT button and highlight other ones. This way you get a multiselection of Channels, and the Value you're going to change is going to apply to several Channels at the same time.
Great tip! Thanks!
Hello Mr. Animal iI have the mx1 connected to the tr8s and there is not a normal sound distorted and big noise it is connected via usb with all the new software on it you got some id's?
What is and how do we use the diital canal?
Will this mixer be useful with some boutique series equipment, such as the Ju06A snd mc101?
Yes and Its highly recommended and very fun to play with
Im planning on getting another one soon
Hi I take it I can record out via USB to a laptop, I want to link a tr8s, tb3, dj mixer with phono in and speakon out and electronic drum kit
Does it have some kind of metering for the channel db volumes?
Seems like a nice tool for the jams. Cannot really see recording a final product with this.
I think when u select a track it shows on the meter on the right.
With USB, u can record your tracks seperately into a DAW and make edits to make a final product.
U can also use the meters of your DAW.
Thanks for the info! Can you make a similar video about the system 1? Specially for the disgusting flashing lights! Jehejehe
Hi! I want to sync my RC-505 into send fx rca and return into 5/6 plug....but i miss something, i need looping into RC-505 all instruments comming from MX-1, is this possible? Thanks!! 😘
Maybe using the Aux Send and Return on the back to apply your FX? Check the manual on Rolands website, it's only 4 pages short :P
Thanks Adam! is possible!
I have question : sin you have all out gear how do you connect all those gear on the mx1 because it only has 4 audio mono input
It has 4 mono, one stereo and if you get an analog to digital converter, the digital in is another stereo track. Then if you use any aira or boutique gear you can connect them to the usb tracks
Also you have aux in which in a pinch can get you more sound, just no BFX
+Anonymous Animal 2 thanks for me back.
Anonymous Animal 2 Great tutorial, I have one but really never had a chance to use it. This is very helpful. I hope you do tutorials like this on a regular basis. Cheers! Mitch
did u plug the KP on the AUX in ? so effectively, it's another channel in ?
Yes that's what I did at first, but now I use 5/6 stereo for the kp3 so that I can sidechain the vocals too
Hi, can you use the MX-1 as a reason controller?
Is this an audio interface too ?
Have you experienced any background noise or static while recording with the MX-1?
Nope, nothing out of the ordinary!
Check your "Return" knob below the headphone volume knob. It could be all the way up which introduces lots of noise.
Hi there and thanks for your torturial! i have a question regardig my set up i ableton. When i hit start on my mx-1 or my TB-03 boutique it also start playing the same notes on my software synth? And when i play my software synth it also play my system-1. its a big mess haha. hope you can help me out!
Kim Jensen sounds like you have them all set to the same midi channel.
considering i really don't want any aria products is the MX-1 even worth me investing?
I do think a performance mixer for live hardware is an absolutely killer idea, though i think the "n" channels that would be lost due to my setup having no aria gear pretty much makes the thing a waist of time!
Very valid question that's not much addressed. Seems none aria uses makes this a no go. I turned down a heavily discounted one.
Feels Roland missed out by making it exclusive. 4mono +1 stereo is not worth the desk space.
@@Spherical_El they really should have made another version alongside this one that had all analogue inputs. It would have been a game-changer. I think it could have sold really well, I can't think of any other mixer like it
If this unit is so good then why would I need a t8 and have it connected to the mx-1?
what do you recommend setting the gain levels and volume levels to when recording
I'm having a problem with the volume of the faders not being recognized when in "External mode" I've got all channels recording but the faders have no effect on the mix :-(
I think this is better for play live from ableton than from synthesizers because you can connect only 5 synthesizers :(
as cool as that is you could make your own really original sound-then tweak and add thru this thn ableton --nothing like real synths etc-break free
What is the tutorial here, I have a mx-1 myself soooo yeah you can use the fx per channel as the button says. Happy Easter!
Can I use it to mix four boutiques?
Yes- but you need to power three out of the four of them, as the MX-1 only has ONE powered USB port. SO- you need to SPLIT the USB on it's way in to the MX-1: one for the MX-1, one for a power plug. The splitters are available on eBay and other cheap online outlets.
DEMO, DEMO, DEMO!!!
Coming very soon over on our first channel!
oh jes
Your uploads haven't been as frequent lately ;(
When using the MX-1 do I need an another audiointerface too? If not is its audiointerface comparable with a Focusrite in terms of latency?
No the mx-1 has a built in audio interface so thats great!
surprised No XLR inputs
your gear sits on a CLOTHDRYER?!?!?!?!?!!!!!!
But he's used multicoloured zip ties....so its cool.
Excellent description/features and tutorial - just what I needed. I wont buy... If only they had put adjustable EQ and Dynamics on each channel then it would be beyond perfect... Thanks a lot anyway.
Please tell me you didn't spent all your money on that equipment, and have it multi-color zip-tied to a universal closet shelf?? Kinda defeats turning off default light show, you have the rainbow coalition securing your equipment. Does your girlfriend know you used her zip-ties?? 👽 👽
Disgusting flashing lights... Lol that's my favorite shit on stuff, if there is no flashing lights everywhere, I don't buy :D
i like a machine that looks like a ufo. Zooooooom!
those lights even when not flashing make the device toy like and it ruin the look of your setup I think . thats why its disgusting :))
😂
Are you using a drying rack + plastic bands ?
You cheap skate :)
