- In this video Bush Barbie takes time out from providing her important public service announcements, and instead steps into her outdoor kitchen to serve up her favourite Aussie recipe - Vegemite on toast (or as us locals like to shorten it to - Vegemite toast)!
Now every Aussie has their own particular way of cooking Vegemite toast so this particular recipe might prove a bit controversial to some! But don't be too dismayed, if you disagree with Bushie's spin on this Aussie classic, or if you have a preferred recipe then please let us know in the comments.

I would argue that "Bush Barbie" is Australia's favorite dish.
Yes she is😍
YUM !
Simps
She’s selling herself short..she’s a real Bush Baby(yeah, they’re not indigenous to Australia, but what the hell).
You know you've made it when thousands are willing to watch a video of you spreading vegemite on a piece of toast.
I was hoping to see not just the toast being spread.
@@combrogi🤣🤣 you beat me to it 😅
As an American, I just imagine BB is using peanut butter rather than vegemite, and it works perfectly well.
Was she spreading something on toast? Sorry, I was peering into her cleavage.
What? What toast? I’m looking at those green eyes!❤️
Ahh, a mastery of innuendo and double entendre. Much appreciation, as it's nearly a lost art form. Kudos...
I stand my toast up like a house of cards to cool so you don’t get a soggy bottom. Nobody likes a soggy bottom.
#metoo :)
Why do get soggy bottoms?
Exactly 😂
@@bas4903 the butter melts with the heat and soaks through.. i won't explain the other Soggy bottom.. but im sure you know what that means 😂
"Nobody likes a soggy bottom."
Ah, yes, but to every rule, there are exceptions. lol
I love the kids appearing in the background at 49 secs. Seeing what mum’s up to and thinking “ fuck me, I’m not getting involved with this “
@0:55 "this is awkward" yep... esp for number one son in the background trying to stay out of shot.
Ah, you noticed that too, did you? 😅
😂
With Nikki being such good eye candy, I never noticed any other person.
Aw shit Mom……at it again?
i thought he was her lover lol
😂😂😂I’m watching toast being buttered😂😂😂❤
With extra. 😂❤
I'd watch her read a phone book.
I love Australia, love her voice, her eyes, guess there’s nothing I don’t love about this beautiful lady. Thanks kid , USMC!
A good looking girl. 100%
USMC? United States Marine Corps? You're American? Never been to Aus? Then you probably think there's women like this all over the place?
Sorry. Nope.
@@abrogard Sorry to hear that my friend, from the things I have seen still a beautiful place and strong people. Have a good one.
I concur 🥰
If you look again you'll notice there is a wee bit of nice cleavage there I notice that right off the bat
2:54 "But don't leave crumbs in there!"
When the Mum voice comes out, a great way to spike the heart rate.
Is it true what they say about Australian kissing?... It's like a French kissing, but, down under?
I call that heading down south. Not down under.
Everyone dreams of goin down ta Tasie for a for a visit.
You never know what you catch these days when you go down. They have been with so many. Think about the other man on your tongue. My last down under was still dripping. Never again.
😂
No way am I liking this comment and ruining a perfectly good 69
This is brilliant.
The only thing to compare it with is that many years ago Clement Freud, a cookery writer, wrote a piece in which he described in minute detail making a wholemeal loaf, selecting the proper tomatoes, harvesting the correct beans, and thus making perfect beans on toast.
I can only say that the Bush Barbie version is much nicer to look at.
Thanks for sharing! Richard Curtis' Father in Law if my memory serves me well!

The Enya was perfect for this. Also you need to give screen credit to your young Ninja in the back right who appeared and disappeared barely seen. He has skill sets 😂😂😂.
That's exactly how we have our vegemite toast... gotta put that second 'smearing' of butter on it.

Gotta mix that butter in and yeah what sort of maniac puts Toast in a Toaster!!
Absobloodylutely love your work mate 🤠
That's another difference between Australia and the rest of the world.
The rest of the world has to make do with crickets.
What sort of maniac? The sort who isn't a swagman trying to toast a slice of damper (does it slice?) over his camp fire on a forked stick, timing the toasting singing a verse of "Waltzing Matilda," that's who.
@@w.reidripley1968 which version of Waltzing Matilda??
Also it was about Toast in a Toaster soo 🤷🏼
Best presentation of making toast there is. For me, I put butter on soon as toast comes out the toaster. Spread it on like Bondo on a car fender. YUMMY!
The Steve Irwin figure...that dude was a legendary human being. Sad day when he passed.
0:55 hahaha... in the background.... "this is awkward". Mom's at it again.
Imagine his mates giving it the thumbs up?
Bread is raw toast.
I remember a Paul Hogan sketch from years ago explaining how important it was to leave a little bit of butter in the Vegemite jar and a little bit of Vegemite on the bar of butter. It’s good to see old Aussie traditions still being taught.
@dutchy1121
Hoges was doing a nostalgia sandwich as made by a kid, so there HAD to be some butter left in the Vegemite jar....... and some Vegemite left in the butter tub because that's how kids leave it 😂.
I've found that the best way to eat vegemite is to tell someone that is dark chocolate pudding and watch them eat a big spoonful of it. Lol.
I believe that is considered a war crime in most civilized countries.
@@grisch4329 Australian equivalent to Guantanamo Bay.
I went to Australia a couple of times while in the service, I tried vegemite, and can honestly say "You have ruined that toast" !
Harden-Up Mate
DON'T SPREAD IT THICK LIKE APPLE BUTTER NO MATTER WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE.
Spread it thin enough to read newsprint through. Makes it unami piquant instead of overwhelming.
Don't spread it like jam or butter, more like strong mustard...though it's nothing like mustard, the flavor is about as strong as a heavy dijon mustard.
i can only say...... you just don't know
now when i think about it, i wonder if there's a recipe out there somewhere cos i live in germany. no vegemite or anything similiar to be found :(
@@bluddyrowdy8757 Ive eaten snakes, alligators, frog legs, even ate hog brains and scrambled eggs once, to me Vegemite tasted worse to me. I reckon its all in the familiarity and taste buds, Heck, I dont even like Nutella.

There's some bits of Bush Barbie that'd be more fun than others...
Love her hilarious and the Steve irwin action man yes and the vegemite xx

Great timing right!!
when i was in the royal brisbane women's hospital in 2010. i had fasted for 7 days without water and food.. first meal was chicken soup and jelly. next meal was some solid food like bread with butter and vegemite! it was the first time i had vegimate and it was super delicious.. i would never forget that moment.. best food in my life!

I'm one of the few Americans who love Vegemite, so I'd like to take this opportunity to say thank you Australia for your culinary gift to the world!
Sweet that's good to know 😊
if you like a cheese and Vegemite toasted - try using frozen bread, the butter spreads on one 1/2 and Vegemite on the other add your cheese close her up and into the toaster oven for 10 minutes or until your prefered darkness of toast.
the vegemite spreads super easy on the frozen bread, and if the other 1/2 has left the bloody butter in the fridge it's easier to spread as well.
Same way I do it. Especially the extra butter!
I am in Noosa. In this part of the coast we put the butter on immediately with no second coating. What they do 'inland' god only knows.
She just smiled and made me a Vegemite sammich...
Annnnnd with that Steve Irwin Doll, you rise to the top of the list! Luv YA Bushie!
And to think a 'chemist' invented it. Onya Luv, blood's worth bottling.
Crickey, bread goes in and toast comes out like magic. I really enjoy this content, keep it up, thank you.
I tried that stuff when visiting Australia, from the UK, and it was really nice, similar to Marmite but sweeter tasting. Love the sounds coming from around your garden, sounds like a jungle out there.

You mean put the bread in the toaster .. the bread then becomes toast .. yeah something like that or maybe not

We're happy little Vegemites, as bright as bright can be. We all enjoy our vegemite for breakfast, lunch and tea 🎶
The lad @58 😂😂😂. He’s like “oh great, she’s at it again”…
So incredible you are. The national treasure of Australia. I’m living in the US and love Vegemite. Hope to see you soon on your next adventure.
Its an acquired taste. An Aussie workmate brought a jar back from holiday, we all tried it, a resounding "NO!" was the final tally on taste. I'll stick with a nice strawberry jam or British orange marmalade, you Aussies do you.
@@crosslink1493 I think I should have phrased the one sentence in my original post. Yes, I live in the US because I’m a US citizen. My Aussie friends dared me to try Vegemite, I bought a small jar and ate it with instructions from my Aussie friends. Yes, you’re right it being an acquired taste. After a few weeks the taste has grown on me. My Aussie friends were amazed that I liked it.
@@AusNetFan13 try marmite mate far better!
@@jonm2884 I’ll try it next. However I did read stories about fans of both Marmite and Vegemite and the fights (word wise) between the two.
One minute toast = sushi toast
By the time she made my Vegemite on toast, I would have started and finished my 8 hour shift.
This is has been the most difficult recipe I've ever tackled... It's just how my Mama would have made it. Greetings from Johannesburg S.A.😊😅😂
Legit question for the CZcams community. I’ve never tried this stuff, what does it taste like ?
Thank you for the longer videos Nikki, More Bush Barbie please. Just more yah….😄
It's a bit like Marmite, but not as good...
Marmite and Vegemite are the same thing, a yeast extract.
It tastes like nothing else, it's quite salty.... maybe a very strong, paste version of soy sauce?
The amount Nikki uses here is a "hero" amount, usually less is more. It's really good as a base for a toasted cheese sandwich, or as a "flavour enhancer" for stews, pot roasts, casseroles etc.
Tastes like solid Soy Sauce. :) Salty umami.
Marmite is a bit milder, and is gooey like honey. Vegemite is a bit stronger and spreads like margarine.
@@amcconnell6730 Perfectly said
It's a salty unami belt, very intense. Spread it thin enough on your toast to read newsprint through --- no more. This moderates it down to just piquant. As noted elsewhere, it makes a fair soup base, though perhaps not for anyone watching their sodium intake. It's salty enough to keep on a kitchen cabinet shelf -- in Darwin.
Like the party in her shirt😊
I’m crying over here! 😅😅 You’re a gem! 💎 love these how to videos!! 🤣🤣
Yay! Thank you!
I'd wager its never dull around her house,
Heinz Baked Beans & Vegemite On Toast Beautiful
Yeah, that's way too much vegemite for my liking. To all you Yanks out there, you're going to want to spread a whole lot less vegemite or you'll hate it so much you'll never try it again. But then again, you guys probably won't be able to find the stuff in the States.
Next do "Australian Roulette"
Fairy Bread with random pieces spread with Vegemite on instead of butter.
Dont get her started....
Thank you. I've wondered for over 40 years... WTF is a vegemite sandwich? Found it for sale in US, tried it and like it. Thanks ;)

What on god's green earth is Vegamite? Hmm. Thank god for wikipedia. Favorite, eh?
Or Vaginamite as we used to call it
Start on Promite first, it's a little more sane and will build up the cast iron layer on your stomach before you hit the hard stuff :P

@@GenghisVern mate, cobba, whatever lol call me anything but late for lunch. I'm not an easy offended type lol

Promite is a little less salty and not quite as bitter, but flavour is similar. Since they offshore the ownership of Vegemite it has developed a bit of a weird after taste so I moved to Promite now. I can still eat Promite out of the jar like I used to with Vegemite. Kind of like a teaspoon lollypop and just suck it it slowly as a savory flavor thing.
And it's full of B complex vitamins :P
@@axle.australian.patriot But what is in it, besides salt? I assume from the name that it's vegetarian, correct?
Just the way I like mine.
Excellent comedy genius better than TV
That was a homoeopathic dose of Vegemite with a focused medicinal value only ...
One can also apply as much (but not more) as Nutella does for true enjoyment and bliss. N.B. Also goes well with French crepes. 🙂
I can honestly say I’ve never noticed Nikki’s eyes before (I’m typically looking elsewhere) but she has absolutely beautiful eyes! Stunningly beautiful. Love the show and wish she’d come to America.
"its a bit cold" LOL i wasn't disappointed with this title and video :)
I now want to marry Bush Barby. Never heard of her before, but I feel I have a shot
Who knew you could create a 4 minute YT video about buttering a toast that you want to watch over and over...
Just rolling on the floor laughing 😂
Here in the USA, we butter our toast in a clockwise swirl. In Australia, due to the Corialis effect, I reckon you do the same job anti-clockwise.
Nikki… you are a genuine down to Earth, genuine superstar… love you to bits… the world needs more beautiful, non-precious strong women like you… “non-precious”, I think I made that up”
Put the bread 🍞 flat on top of the toaster and switch it on makes the toping melt
GREAT VIDEOS VERY FUNNY AND CLEVER WORDS great to hear Australian accent 😀 😅
@0:55 "this is awkward" - A true mum! Eyes in the back of her head
Damn right, you gotta wait 36 seconds (I wave them around to speed up the cooling on the outside) before adding heaps of butter and a bit of Vegemite.
After watching Bush Barbie making the toast, I am now thinking with an Australian accent ... if I actually eat the Veggie toast, will I be speaking with an Australian accent? That would be totally cool 🙂
California here.
When in the land down under I’ll have toast this way.
Usually I’m very particular about my toast: Almost burnt, hard enough to make a plate ring when I hit it with a slice. Thickly buttered edge to edge with room temp butter.
I’m going to see if I can have vegemite shipped!
Cheers! 🍺
whatever you do, dont spread it on too thick otherwise you'll never like it after that
Love her or hate her, Bush Barbie's always good for a laugh!
Years ago i would take hot soup to work. One day mom ran out so guess what. A few spoons of Vegemite in boiling water in the flask. Bit of a surprise.
Almost right. Firstly, let the real dairy butter you correctly chose get much softer at room temperature.
(I always leave my butter out on the bench, covered. Australian fridges used to have butter compartments which kept it perfect, but with the rise of cancer inducing margarine, they disappeared)
I like to let the toast go cold, I even speed up the process by putting it in the fridge for a minute or two. Lay the butter on thick then blend the Vegemite by spreading it back and forth with the knife. One of your edits showed a perfect result. The creamy crunchiness is sublime.
" Butter Puddles...! "
Lol...😅😂😅😅😅
bah, drier than a dead dogs dinga,,, butter one slice(hot as fark toast) and australian yes australian 333's Mighty Mite on the other ("HAF Toast") A Toasty Aussie Sanga !
I remember hearing David Byrne from Talking Heads when asked about the food in Australia after their tour he said "they make good toast". This just proves his point.
Love when Nikki does the Starfish 😂😂😂
Too MUCH! I am at a loss for words so ❤🥃🥃🥃🥃
My ocd is ringing in my head. Keep the toast cooling in a rack, or prop them on something, to avoid a wet underside. I also use a separate knife to avoid getting butter in the Vegemite (or Marmite in my case, which is definitely better). Anyone who melts the butter is a psychopath 😂
I never knew that about the toaster dial! Thanks for enlightening me.
{nerdy voice} Acktually ... that's a common misconception :) The dial on a toaster designates the amount of current flow ... very techie but probably the most misleading timing device ever :D
