who knew that the sum of a shitload of strait lines added up to a curve. and i agree, the small imperfections of natural materials is a huge part of the charm

For these jobs I bought meself a set of the cheapest tungsten grit files I could find and bent them. I use it all the time.
Great job Tom, but it does remind me of my dislike of ball finial carving - it's just so labour intensive! Prefer the lathe to be honest

Superb stone masonry content continuing on from a previous video detailing efficient methods to remove waste material on underside of the ball finial and base region. Your reference to the original drawing and the order of cutting checks was clearly described and demonstrated - it also provided a wonderful contrast to an alternative hand tool approach ( we used at Bath College). The guidance on abrasives to finish the surface of the ball finial were insightful too as were the tips on using a marker pen to create a uniform line around the angle grinder blade so as to be able to cut to a precise depth around a curved surface. The entire video was really helpful in providing additional insight to carving a perfect ball finial using both hand and power tools in unison.THANKS SO MUCH for taking time out to make and share such valuable creative content. It is MOST APPRECIATED!!!

    Coming along well that.😎
    Great video again, very informative.
Look forward to seeing your approach to those little radial mouldings on the plinth.

Great work, gives a realistic view of the difficulties of stone carving even with the best equipment.
How long did it take you to do everything up to this point, meaning how many working days?
Started doing some stone carving couple of months back, so that information would be interesting
    Cheers

Looks like a bit of purbeck or possibly mottled limestone?
Love working with the softer stones over granite or similar any day 😉👍

Yeah it’s a Spanish limestone called Laguna. I did a big job out of it a couple of years ago and this piece was missing ordered so has sat in my yard for a while. The quarry is actually shut now I believe so it’s no longer available.

@mainstonecarving cheers for the info 👍
You're inspiring me to get some stone and get back into masonry as been out of the trade for a while, miss the art but not the dust as I'm sure you'll understand 😉🤣
Keep up the good work and keep posting as it's always interesting to see these crafts from other talented people 🫵😁👍

Been meaning to ask; what's the waterfall in the background? Forgive me if you've already explained this a few times. I'm assuming it is a ventilation system that forces dusty air through water to clean it, but I suppose it could also be a way of making sure the humidity stays at a reasonable level so you're not getting bloody noses every 10 minutes.

So the machine in the background is called a "waterwall" which is a dust extraction machine like you said. It has a really large fan inside and a long sprayer bar which sprays the water that gets recycled from the sump at the bottom. The dust is drawn in through the machine, hits the water and then collects in the sump which needs emptying every few months. It is externally vented to the tiny amount of dust that does get through the water gets fired outside 👍
