  • I'm Raxxanterax and I make Build Guides, Leveling Guides, Tier Lists and More for Diablo 4, Last Epoch, Path of Exile and Path of Exile 2. Today I had the pleasure of interviewing Diablo 4 developers Adam Jackson and Joe Piepiora about the current state and future of Diablo 4. We didn't get through nearly all the questions I had but we will hopefully be able to do this again in the future!

      The problem is D4 is trying to cater to both casuals and sweatlords. And both sides are tugging at devs' sleeves in different directions. This ends up creating a lot of friction in the community, cause like Joe said different people want different things. And that is the root of every major complaint in the community. They add a feature for casual dad gamers, and the sweatlords on reddit go crazy cause it takes an extra 2 seconds to do something in the game now. They add a feature for the basement dwellers, and all the filhy casuals are mad because this new thing is unachievable with the 30 minutes gaming time they get each week. In the end neither side is 100% happy.

    This was a really great interview, Rax. One problem with the internet is people feel emboldened by anonymity and get extra nasty sometimes. But putting a face to the conversation and really going indepth about the process and why things can or can't happen should hopefully quell the noise. • @trebilicious
    @trebilicious Před 22 dny +59

    Great interview. My only disappointment is the answer they gave about not wanting to drastically rework the skill tree. Just because their internal data shows that casual players pick bad passive "trap" skills doesn't mean the current skill tree offers adequate choices. Having only two options to modify key skills isn't enjoyable, particularly when one upgrade consistently outshines the other. There should be more diverse ways to augment each skill. Even Diablo III's skill rune system provided more meaningful choices.

    • @TheDravic
      @TheDravic Před 22 dny +12

      Aspects, Tempering affixes and uniques are more fun and engaging than spending a skill point on free power. It feels more meaningful as an investment to gear up in order to enhance your skill.

    • @rajendra82a
      @rajendra82a Před 22 dny +4

      The Diablo IV skill tree is decent considering the fact that the Codex of Power and Paragon Boards also exist. In Last Epoch there is no Codex, because the functionality of it is merged into the Skill Trees. In Path of Exile, the skill tree seems to be combination of the Paragon Board and a Skill Tree. Diablo IV takes a more modular design approach, and it will get extended over time.

    • @oopomopoo
      @oopomopoo Před 21 dnem +4

      This 200%. You gotta ask yourself, WHY do they select those skills, not just say they're a noob trap. If you select 4 skills that suck that's because you as a player think those 4 skills sound cool. Instead of lumping them all into "those are generators", instead ask how can you either buff the skills so that the person getting 4 feels good about it, or incentivize the use of other skills outside of generators.
      At the end of the day, those same people choosing 4 generators will choose 4 generators until 3 are removed because either they like the skills, or they're just not your target audience. They can be participants, but they're not the people you're actually monetizing to. Neither are the hardcore people of course, but we're basically announcing that due to people with the game attention span of a 7 year old, we can't give you nice things and that's just silly.

You did a great job of presenting some very articulated questions and in return received thorough responses. Some great little nuggets in here, especially about the dev's playing the game and the approach they take with prioritising feedback actions.
    I hope Blizzard continues to try to do these type of open community discussions, they seem to want to be as open and transparent as possible which is awesome to see, as someone who still holds hopes for the game franchise and company as a whole.

    • @DoctorStrange01
      @DoctorStrange01 Před 22 dny +5

      @@TheDravic Nah not life happens, corpo greed happens and Blizzard being entirely focused on making games for money (casuals) happens. D4's dev team could have GGG, EHG or Crate level of passion and talent for making ARPGs and it still wouldn't matter much, because if they came up with something that has depth, layers of customization, intricate systems/mechanics, it would be discarded because white collars would ask them if this is what sells and the answer would obviously be "no, the opposite" :D Sad but true, Blizzard is not where the good games are anymore.
      That being said S4 looks like a step into the right direction, but the traces of corpo greed Blizzard is still very noticable, like the skill tree section of this interview. You can't with a straight face as a Diablo dev say that adding a few new skills or a way to customize them a bit more would make the game worse, lol. It's literally illogical, it would only add more variety to the builds, it wouldn't turn this game into a complex game :D There are many more examples, but at least they seem to have fixed the terrible itemization, that's a starting point. I guess the expansion will truly show what they want to do with this game in a long run.

  • @tunnfisk
    @tunnfisk Před 21 dnem +3

    Great interview. I think the dev team is doing good, especially when it comes to talking about things like this.
    The things I really would like to see in Diablo 4 are..
    -Loadouts (you call it Armory), but basically, saving builds. Although I play a lot and grind a lot, I really really despise rerolling a build. It's tedious and boring. Which basically reduces my willingness to try out other builds. When I find a good enough build in a season, I will more or less play it to the end. And in my opinion, that's an issue.
    -Resetting dungeons, for the very obvious reason of time waste. It's one of my main reasons of burning out during the season. That and the constant looking over loot, which should be a lot better in season 4. But the dungeon reset is extremely frustrating and tedious and something I would like to see addressed eventually.

I really enjoyed the whole conversation. If the Diablo team manages to keep this up, both in terms of communication and community driven development, I am confident they will make Diablo great again. I am old and trust me - I have my own pairs of rose colored glasses looking back at old Diablo games, but I am convinced, the foundation they have build with D4 has the potential to surpass them all. If they keep going down this path, D4 will be remembered as one of the greats in a few years. I hope Blizz keeps investing, since the team slowly but surely earns my trust.

    • @Sins13
      @Sins13 Před 21 dnem

      Yes that is true but the issue is they need to find a way to make things challenging/fun that isn't just don't get hit / one shot, make things unkillable to 90% of builds, or tedious. They cant add in modes / fights that will capture that audience until there is a massive balance to where there are more than 1-2 skills that can accomplish everything. Once tops builds are only 5-10% stronger than others then new types of fights can happen. Modifiers can be added or stuff like Lilith. Like no mods, she dosent do the waves. Lvl 1 mod is just the slam part. Lvl 2 is what it is now. Lvl 4 can add in blisters to phase 1. This is how they can add in things. For those that play wow, I think the boss was yogg. Where you could have base, 1-3 extra mods or whatever that increased challenge. That is how they need to design stuff. Also side note.... why are the numbers so freaking high already. Like lvl 1 should be doing 1-2 damage mobs have 5 hp. lvl 100 hitting 1-2k with like 5k hp. % multipliers should only be in gear. Everything else should be additive. The numbers are already way out of control. Again wow as example, they had to stat squish because everything was % based instead of flat.
      Another side note... they need to copy LE skill tree. Current is so bland there will never be personalization. This game needs TONS more uniques like tempest roar that changes how stuff works. Why isnt there one that converts rabies to fire or adds explosions instead of bouncing etc.

      1. armor cap is easier to hit making room for more offensive builds
      2. better general affix
      3. greater affixes
      4. masterworking
      Damage this season will be higher

    I just want to say the number 1 reason that stopped me from playing D4 for hundreds more hours is lack of loadouts, or armory as you called it. I wanna enjoy PvP and do more builds but I can't without it because switching between them with the current systems would be hell on earth.

I loved the auction house ( ignored real money) when d3 came out and always looked at loot thinking I dont need this but it may help someone else.
