By all accounts, yes. He was gentle soul. I didn't get to speak or know him.
But I did get to know my other guitar influencer, Reverend Gary Davis. I saw him in 1968 at the Mariposa Folk Music Festival. I asked for his phone number and a week later I called and asked to visit him in New York. So I spend a week with him. Then maybe one year later the local Folk Music Club scheduled Reverend Gary Davis to come to play for 6 days. The Manger asked if I could have the Reverend stay with me. Of course I said yes. So Gary stayed with me in Ottawa and it was wonderful.
I play both Mississippi John Hurt and Reverend Gary Davis songs, although the Reverend songs are more difficult.

I was there. Man, I miss those festivals. When I was in Rhode Island I went all the Jazz and Blues Festivals on all the days. We'd sleep overnight on Newport Beach, then catch the next day's event. Always great jazz, folk, and blues. And it was a photographer's dream. I have so many great pics. And there were usually musicians appearing that didn't strictly fit the genre of the festival. I once got a nice candid shot of Van Morrison. Damn, I miss those festivals. Btw, I also saw Mississippi John Hurt at the Unicorn Coffee Hose in Boston.

MJH was a master musician with a unique style and a gentle winning personality. I regret that I didn't see him live. He was a major influence on my own music (along with Doc Watson, Bill Monroe and Muddy Waters all of whom I did see live) Note the respect the audience had for him and the intense observing that Van Ronk and Sonny and Brownie afford him. They knew good music. This very song "Kassie Jones," (Jay Gould's Daughter) was my own breakthrough in fingerpicking. With the help of some herb, I finally relaxed my mind enough to catch the groove, then I didn't "need" the outside help after that. I have been merrily picking ever since, about 47 years. It remains fun and a large part of my artistic life . Thanks MJH

Hey my friend beautiful storie. I am a huge fan of MJH and I use herb to learn his songs just the same. I saw an information that he said he used to plant it and smoke (I don't know how much he did it). And he said it was the poor people's whiskey, cause when they dont have for alcohol they use the weed.

Stephan Grossman would know... or Phillip Ratcliffe, who wrote the definitive biography of Hurt. Recommended reading! It does look like Van Ronk though... Ronk was especially a student of Gary Davis.... hmmm... love that era and time. I was born in 1973, so it was before me, but I do love that history. MJH is the very best in my opinion. The company originated as a Manhattan based research archive named Associated Researchers and Image Quest; it was founded by Joe Lauro and Richard Plagge in 1991. Lauro had previously worked for Archive Films as a researcher and Plagge for FOX MOVIETONE NEWS when they decided to form their own company. They soon realized that licensing footage was more lucrative than acting as researchers. In 1993, the company moved to East Hampton, close to Plagge's home.
