It does seem problematic that mini-splits do not have a more efficient air filter, unlike that which the central air handlers are capable of using. But unless you have severe allergies or have a significant lung disorder, I doubt most people care how efficient their HVAC systems scrub the air. What matters is if the air filters can protect the internal components of the air handlers (the cooling fins, for example) from clogging too easily with air contaminants that air flow is severely restricted. A dedicated air purifier in the room/rooms of a house seems to me the more cost efficient answer.
