This Weekâs Watch is the Rolex GMT-Master II, AKA the modern âRoot Beerâ
The original brown dial, brown bezel GMT, nicknamed the âRoot Beerâ was launched in 1970 and phased out in the Nineties. But does this modern version of the GMT-Master II live up to the name? And will purists ever accept it as a credible modern âRoot Beer?â

Hope you enjoy this episode. This is a brand new watch channel, so any constructive feedback would be appreciated. If you want to see a particular watch from my collection, or any others, let me know.
Wow, this is probably my favorite GMT-Master out of all of em.
Dreaming of the day I can purchase a high end piece. Currently Iâm 19 and have my savings account set up for a grail watch of my own.
Does it matter if its a real root beer or not? It is a Rolex GMT 11 mixed metal, get a life. I cannot understand why people feel the need to give Rolex timepieces a nickname. You either like it or you don't. You buy a watch because you like it, not because of the hype. I collect and wear Rolex watches because I like them. Good luck with your channel.
Hi guys. really enjoying the new channel ! I currently have a Tudor gmt and a Tudor pelagos LHD which I love, but have now put my name down for an OP 39mm rhodium dial...got the call and itâs come in so will collect once stores open. What are your thoughts on the entry level Rolex in the rhodium dial? The reviews online seem to like it but never seen one in the flesh so hopefully it works out... thanks again.
The whole AD waiting list rapport building exercise is a truly disgusting practice ! Why shouldnât somebody be able to buy a watch with stickers, keep it and do what they want with it ? Maybe some ADâs should stop selling Rolex ? You should go in a list, fair enough.. but your place on that list should be fairly reflected as a number. Not based on how much money you have or the position you hold.
it's a limbo not a waitlist and whoever says otherwise is kidding themselves. You put your name in there and they decide if you are worth it of their goddly watches. If I want to sell the fucking watch is my fucking business, if I want to keep it it's also my decision and mine alone. Some guys manage to get the watch they want right away and some never end up getting it, they always need to bundle to get anything rolex related and will likely spend hundreds of thousands before getting a steel sports rolex.
Imagine going to a restaurant and before they decide if they are willing to serve you the main dish or not they suggest you buy a bunch of starters you don't want. You can get up and leave, sure, but that's just a terrible approach. Restaurants have waiting lists, but they follow a numerical order, your turn eventually comes, and you can choose to consume whatever you want, however you feel like doing it.
Iâm torn. What you say makes absolute sense and tend to agree with you. But for me, they are a private company and in a free society they are allowed to sell to who they like. I thinks itâs just a little game. I managed to get my brand new sub in Mar-2020 this year during corona by post. 6 weeks before I walked into the AD first time ever and looked at a Yachtmaster. I made sure to wear a nice shirt and shoes đ. I wore my IWC Portugieser because they are watch people and always check. They didnât have any other sports Rolex in any display except the Yahctmaster. After I chatted to the sales guy about how I loved the tapering of the Yachtmaster compared to the Submariner, he said he had a no date I could compare it to in the back. I had a look at it in a side room and I said actually I love the sub and I told him about how I loved James Bond and felt like Connery wearing it. I asked to put my name down on âthe listâ and said I know itâs probably going to be years, he said âno, maybe weeksâ. A couple of weeks later I went back in and spoke to the same sales rep and had a chat, asked him to sign up to the ADâs newsletter etc... asked him a bit about his family etc, just building a rapport, not because I pre-planned, just being a normal chatty person. 4 weeks later I get a call, you Sub has arrived. Maybe it was between me and another person but I was more like able. Thatâs why I got it. Got to play the game and put some effort into getting something so rare!
Great analogy
Jack Young Iâm liking your work there Young Jack. Youâve obviously put a lot of thought into your plan of attack and what you needed to do to achieve your Goal.
I on the other hand, am a inherently lazy Sod and it sounds like a lot of shoe leather has been worn down in your quest. Imagine if you could just speak to somebody at your âLodgeâ who could get it sorted for you in 72 hours.........đŽó §ó ąó „ó źó §ó żđŹđ§đ
A real beauty!, my next watch all being well đ€đ€. Really enjoyed the video helped convince me even more
Thanks
Interested in the whole relationship aspect of remaining top of mind as a collector. An interview with someone from the dealer world might make for an interesting video.
I love that re-edition 806, too!
This is the only 2-tone watch I would wear and I love that you made this video. I tried one on and loved it.
đđ
Great video ! I'm lucky enough to also own this watch and it's my favorite out of my collection , lovey piece. The colour combination and rose gold is a superb blend . As you said it's the relationship with your AD is key , difference of waiting a year to months/weeks
Couldn't agree more!
Thanks for the new upload, loving this series. Some wishes for future reviews: Aquanaut, Milgauss, Ingenieur or any of your Doxas!
All on the way, Ging
That non hacking jump hour feature is very useful for global travellers - Iâve got it on an Omega Seamaster and have used it on many international flights. Itâs a true travellers watch with up to three time zones accessible at a glance. As for the colour scheme Iâd have to reserve judgement until I see it in the metal but they are so rare I doubt that will happen anytime soon. Looks very smart.
Not seen that model before but itâs kind of cool. Not a massive Rolex fanboy what they make is amazing but itâs what most people aspire to own when they are a one watch guy. I actually prefer the Tudor line up.
Very strong analysis Damian, especially as you've only been in the watch game for 4 years or so. That 1675/8 is a beauty you should have bought it - it's super tasteful and with fbp nearly ÂŁ30k now - it might have originally had 'Concorde' hands instead of Mercedes btw and dial is reddening too which adds value. In Asia some refer to it as a tiger eye too. It looks even better on a 70s full gold jubilee - I have a 1675/8 black nipple on jubilee (I say jubillee only because the 1675/8 oyster bracelet has slightly fancy boy polished centre links / first ever professional with polished centre links btw - true afficinados hate polished links on professional pieces and that's partly why early 37mm 62xx and 40mm 16520 Daytonas are liked over later fancy blingy models ) Ps In the collector world it's a bracelet (straps are non metal material) so it's bit like using correct term of case and crate for beer and wine. Forgive me too, but first GMT it's a 6542 - I have one just like the photo with original bakelite and radium gloss Swiss dial - they are a sublime watch ... Your viewers and you might like a GMT myth I busted and is not well publicised yet :
There has been a 50yr myth of the GMT bezel two colours being representation of day and night ....spoiler alert - it's not!
I've being doing research for a PhD and I always thought this notion was off-beam.
It was actually Pam-Am requesting in 1954 that the GMT under development should have a aviation vibe' and mimic in look the Attitude Indicator (AI) which indicates sky in blue and ground in reddy brown in their mainstay DC6 airplane The day/night myth was always troubling to me as all black bezels were introduced in 1970...... why would they do that if it was an important function to show day/night?
Also the concept of night/day on a rotating bezel if you are many times zones away is inconsistent with non equinox non equator countries in summer/winter when you start using it anyway.
Sports illustrated propagated this myth 58 yrs ago and until now nobody questioned it.
So there you go - Myth busted!
Keep up the good work and if you need any info/pieces let me know.
Awesome feedback, Paul - thanks. Also thanks for you great work in the watch community - I'm an avid viewer of many of your vids, and I was gutted I missed the Brighton show.
@@TheWatchGuysTV Hi Damian - Thanks, but that Paul Thorpe is not me btw, just the same name.
Ps I'm a pal of Dickie Meaden - I used to lend Dickie,John and Harry a car or two when EVO first set up in 98 - eg my German registered 99 lhd Porsche GT3 996.1 for our Targa Florio trip to Sicily in edition 28 / Feb 2001
Ah, my mistake
Awesome watch and great story! Your videos are great addition to the community! Thanks for the great work!
Thank you Leon, I try my best
I personally love my Rootbeer
3:00 reference 6242 ??? It was reference 6542 with bakelite bezel !
Root Beer. Yes please. Lovely looking watch.
I love this new Rolex Root Beer, classy watch with several useful complications. The Rose Gold suits my taste for something rich looking and unique to this line of watches. The 70 hour power reserve makes it better than its predecessors Iâll definitely be holding on to the one I own, Iâve no regrets.
Nice one, Challa
Thanks for showing this heavy hitting piece Damian.
My pleasure
I love that your watch has very light scratches on it and you ware it instead of having a safe queen . I nearly bought one last March but tried on the deep sea sea dweller and just had to have it so itâs still on the I NEED list đ
Yes, the Deep Sea is one cool watch
Just picked up one of these from the AD. Lovely watch. Quite pink!
Very nice!
Great piece, and I have both new and old, but this is 100% not a root beer
It has taken me literally more than 2 years to be able to see one of these in real life! I saw it at a local non-Rolex AD the other day, a pristine pre owned 2019 and of course at a premium over msrp. Soon as I had it on my wrist, I knew I would one day own one and it would become the main watch in my collection. I immediately contacted my Rolex AD, and have been put on a waiting list. I am willing to be patient and wait for this and being normally an impulsive buyer, I think it will get more appreciation for me having to wait for it. Yes, I could have bought the one I saw at a premium, and it's already sold so I can't go back and change my mind! Thanks for an excellent review! Cheers, Carl
I bet youre still waiting over a year later. I have owned mine since August and I will get to enjoy it for the rest of my life.
Did you get it yet?
Iâm an Omega collector, especially for the vintage moonwatch ones, witch I have in a dozen or so. Iâm curious about yours feelings on them.
I've got one, but so far not been bitten by that particular bug.
TheWatchGuys Iâm also deep into military watches, especially Rolexâs one. Hope one day to see one of those showed by you. Greetings from Italy
Hello from Brunei. I like the Root Beer GMT Master 2,. I appreciate the history or the controversy behind the watch but i like the watchsâ aesthetics regardless. On another note, i just saw my uncle bought a Datejust two tone rose gold with diamond markers and rose gold dial....Beautiful !
Nice, welcome to the channel
Another enjoyable video Damien, never knew much about this particular model of Rolex but now I dođ thanks for that and I look forward to your next video ..
Glad you enjoyed it, Terry
What do you think of the Breitling Top Time "ZORRO" I absolutely love it.
I bought a solid gold RootBeer a few months after launch. I off-loaded it for ÂŁ1k under what I paid six months later, for various reasons (not for need of money). Demand is not what the internet suggests.
The good was 1) ONLY watch enthusiasts recognised it and usually came and spoke to me about it. 2) Rolex staff at ADs had a âwatch orgasm â when I entered their shop. The service was suddenly amazing! The bad - 1) The Rose Gold just didnât look good on my wrist, my Yellow 40mm day date (brand new, two months later) looks so much better. Still their best watch. 2) Ordinary folk thought it was fake - and said so. 3) Hard to read the black face. 4) I am a massive Rolex fan, always have been, but only in steel or solid gold or Platinum only, I really donât like two tones. This is the best of a bad bunch, and strangely better to look at than the solid version. But steel Rolex GMTs (at al) versions are prettier, smarter, cooler and cheaper. I know itâs only a view, but from someone whoâs actually owed /owns a dozen Rolex (& others) including a modern style RootBeer please heed my advice. Itâs ultra cool, but somehow didnât tick the box for me. Iâd rather have a batman, batgirl etc. With no agenda, they do better watches ...
The simpler Rolex all the way. Don't know why you made such an obvious mistake. That gaudy blingy look-at-me image is precisely what I try to avoid. Tbh nearly all of modern Rolex looks that way. And vintage is just unobtainium. Lesson learned.
gmshadowtraders Were each of your girlfriends perfect?...
I hear what you're saying, John, and I pretty much agree with you. The majority of my Rolex are simpler models, and this is the only two-tone, so it therefore stands out. I would prefer a full gold 70s/80s Rootbeer, but I think the current one in all gold might be a step too far.
@@johnscott4693 No mate, both my ex's were fucking crazy. Sure they were beautiful. But you have to look deeper than the superficial, But at least with watches you can kind of use your intellect and experience to reduce risk. With people that's a different matter entirely. In retrospect, I should have considered their family backgrounds more, lol. Touche! But going back to watches, the new rootbeer I thought was fantastic, and out of all the new Rolexes it was the one I was actually considering. But something just held me back, a gut feel. I had always loved the plain but elegant 14060 Submariner no date. I suggest you find the most 'boring' looking Rolex next time. Good luck!
Iâve found comparing watches is like comparing Helena Christensen 25 years ago, to Natalie Portman today, with Scarlett Johansson 5 years ago. You just canât. Itâs taste, style, your mood that year, fashion and more. Each great in their own way. I will be buying the replacement sub with a blue face in solid Yellow next year when they bring it out. And they will be. I just pray they donât change too much. Iâll try and bundle it with a steel - I do love the jubilee bracelet and I travel globally, so whilst the steel sub is the one, I wonât buy two subs ( and / or flip it, Iâm not a flipper) you can guess which one it will be. PS. Sorry to hear youâre a flipper (of wives!). Still with mine, but only because she allows my watch habit!
Excellent vid on the Root Beer. Just subbed!
Glad you enjoyed it
my sample arrives in 2 month!!! I'm really exiting.... expecially cause I've the original root beer bi color 1971 (eye of tiger?)
I have this very watch and completely agree with your review. Not a fan of the Breitling though. The dial is far too busy for me
Welcome to the channel
Itâs absolutely beautiful
Great reviews, amazing purchasing stories and educational together with entertaining videos!
Thank you very very much đđđŒ
Am I the only one, who does not understand why Rolex does not offer a âchocolate đ« dialâ as an alternative as well ??
i think an awesome update would be a light brown dial and a jubilee bracelet
Just subscribed, loving the channel. A question though. Why do your videos look like they were shot from inside an 18th century Gulag?
Thanks - welcome aboard. I thought it was an interesting texture and different to the usual gentlemen's club/coffee shop/office environment.

Loved this video thank you. I actually just purchased this watch in 2020 before the world shut down due to the COVID 19. In watching the unboxing I notice that there is no bezel protector. Mine also did not have a bezel protector. However in another video someone else had a protector. Does the model have one ? Should I get in touch with my AD to get one ? Pleas keep up the good work with your content.
Hi Albert, it may have had one and I misplaced it, or told the AD to keep it
I picked up my rootbeer from an AD with no purchase history at the end of 2019. đ I stopped in several times with my other Rolex watches and let them know I was an enthusiast-youâre right that they donât want to sell to flippers! Visit ADâs and having patients is the keyđ! Just subscribed best regards
Welcome to the channel, great to hear from you
Great watch, great video & great channelâ€đ
Thank you so much đ
Damian, what are your thoughts on the now discontinued full yellow gold green dial gmt? Stunning piece imho
Love it
Thatâs a beautiful watch
Another lovely watch I like the full rose gold one.
I know you are a fan of Seiko have you seen the SPB105J1 it is based on a 1960s watch and has a stunning green dial.
Looking forward to the next episode đ
Iâve just checked it out - looks nice. I have the black dial equivalent on the rubber strap
I am sure that it looks a lot nicer in the flesh, especially under natural sunlight. How about adding a rainbow Daytona?
I have one and you are correct, pictures do no justice for this watch. Looks so much nicer in person.
Hi, Damian
Great show and I have enjoyed your every episode. I like root beer a lot as well. Two tone root beer may not be the most popular GMT, but I found that the mixed color is unique and attractive. I have a question for you -- after you possess this two tone root beer for slightly over a year, do you still enjoy it? If you need to pick one between Pepsi and Root Beer, which one would you keep?
Good questions. I have to admit I rarely wear the Root Beer, and it is not often one I go for. Out of the two, most definitely the Pepsi. Maybe I need to get out the Root Beer today and re-appreciate it.
Hi damian I've seen your rolex root beer that's a really good looking watch with 18ct everose gold on it I really love it mate đ
Cheers, Chuks
Your welcome mate đ
Great work mate, great presentation as well as professional and friendly as well as knowledge, huge Aussie Fella mate
Cheers, Phil
Yep! Like!
Great video. I subscribed
Cheers
I totally agree with your advice on getting one of these, or any other sought after piece from an AD. The AD needs to know that you are a true watch lover, and not simply there to buy and then flip. Great to see that you wear all your watches, as I do too.
The latest Root Beer is a beautiful watch to my eyes......
Stunning reference! I just picked up a BLNR but I think Iâm going to ask for a Rootbeer for my wife and I to share. She wears an OP31 turquoise now but has taken a liking to my 40mm watches.
Good choice!
For someone who does'nt own a watch I love this channel...I find it strangely fascinating !!!
Excellent - hope you continue to enjoy
Be careful to not get bitten by the watch bug - the hobby is a bottomless financial pit :)
Iâve spotted this watch on You tube and wishing to hv one And lucky enough to have this as a gift from my wife this Fatherâs day. Its really a desireable pc of Watch to own.
Iâm convinced that 90% of people complaint about the âgameâ to buy a Rolex:
- never planned to buy one because itâs out of their price range
- are too lazy to go in to an AD and talk to someone
I agree with you.
future classic.
Hi,
Would also like to see the review nor the oris big crown bronze that you have.
Looks like a completely different piece or out of place that's part of your collection.
Noted!
My favourite model. đ
Love the 1959 reissue. Am I the only one that is annoyed with the counterclockwise setting required to move the hands clockwise?
Yes finaly a breitling in your videos sorry that I'm only watching now but it was very busy at work so now I have time great video
Welcome back!
It's lush.
I love this rootbeer but the tigereye i prever more.
Yes!
Maybe a silly question, but if you donât travel across time zones, and already live in the UK, what do you set the gmt hand to?
You donât care about it
Cracking channel!!
Thanks
Looks Like a 2 tone COKE to me
Paid my deposit for mine, now just patiently waiting for WOS to reopen so I can collect, cant wait!
Nice one - you won't regret
On the list with my AD ... Relationship established and ongoing ....Waiting , waiting for the doors to open :)
Best of luck!
TheWatchGuys ... Cheers chaps. Hope you enjoy this beautiful day ... Porsche weather don't you think ? Top down , coast road hint hint :) Enjoy
And it arrived đđđ so much more beautiful than I expected . Very happy . Keeper .
Another super video. Love this watch but have to say it looks fabulous and dam sexy on my girlfriendâs wrist !
I like how you roll, my friend
If Rolex didn't have that watch, I wouldn't even look at GMT Masters line.
Gorgeous watch, but I'm just too white to carry this off. Doesn't work well with my skin tone.
I'm white as hell but it still works on me.
the best dealer is the one, who sells the watches to absolutely everybody. there is no sense to not sell a Rolex to a new gut who just walked into the store. I hate this "are u already a customer?" what a bullshit.
100% disagree with that. When it comes to highly prized items, it is far better to verify customers and ensure that their intentions are good, instead of just selling to the first person who comes through the door, and then flogs it the next day for 50% profit. Surely, you must understand that?
Excuse me BUT the only good looking Rolex model available is the rolex submariner rainbow. The other Rolex models are so similar. No, I said follow your TheWatchGuys, you only have boring watches. When you show the clocks you can think that these cost a maximum of 20 pounds. Why don't you get more beautiful watches so Jacob & Co. Epic X custom diamonds, Jacob & Co. Epic X Chrono, Jacob & Co. EPIC X BLACK TITANIUM, Jacob & Co. Epic X Rose Gold. All these slrolex and all other boring chlorine have. Jacob & Co watches are as artwork unaffected price class.
Not sure I agree with that Rolex statement, Ingvar. But there's no denying Jacob & Co are superb pieces of art.
Tudor or rolex is pure sex
First dislike , yup you got it right HA
paige Why would you do that?
