- We do love an SG... so today we take a look at the SG 'Modern' from Epiphone's 2020 'Inspired by Gibson' range. Probably best not watch this if you own one and it's your favourite guitar, or you have your heart set on getting one!

The Epiphone Customs Moderns and prophecy Models are high end guitars absolutely incredible
Check out my reviews of the custom, standard, and specials... I love them 😍 but just didn’t get on with the modern 🤷♂️
Let me defend this guitar. I'd never had any relationship with coil splitting before I got one of these Epi moderns (which I unfortunately had to return due to a defect). The versatility of the coil splitting and phase options can be used in various ways. Very few people know or mention that the out-of-phase switch is also a booster if you use it with the neck pickup. I tried two models and both behaved the same way so it wasn't some electrical mistake. If you want a nice clean sound but you find it too quiet with your amp set up on humbuckers, and you want to switch back and forth, you just pull the neck tone switch so you get some more gain. I found this option incredibly useful, especially with amps like the Revv G20 on which you unfortunately can't change the gain on the clean channel. I also find it fantastic that if I play some heavier stuff that originally played with a Strat (like some of the Billy Talent songs), I just pull the coil split on the bridge pickup and baang. This change between the single coil and humbucker inspired me to write a the verse on the single coil distorted sound and the chorus with the thicker humbucker distortion. So if you still have this guitar please send me to Germany. ;-)
Thanks man, good job defending it! 😆👍 I understand why a lot of people would love it but it just wasn’t for me 🤷♂️
Another great review - glad I didn’t see this before buying my Epiphone Les Paul modern in faded Pelham blue. I understand what you are saying about the SG but I absolutely love my LP ! The neck is sublime and it’s so versatile although to be honest as I also have a Strat it mainly stays in standard humbucker mode. It sounds so much better than your SG through my Blackstar amp which does sound a bit lifeless - Would love to see you review the LP modern !
Your derogatory video prompted me to buy the SG modern. the guitar sounds very good to me !
@wolfgang - Congratulations!... are you familiar with the old saying that 'a bad workman blames his tools?'... that's us that is!!
@@theguitaristas I couln' t understand your comment. for my ears it sounds great. 👍🏼but weall are different ! I just ordered it a few minutes ago ! have a nice evening !
@@theguitaristas Lol.
My issue is that it sounds nice but not at all like an SG. It's a classy generic guitar that would definitely have sold better with "Yamaha" on the headstock.
I have one and it does sound "different." But I haven't had an SG since I was a kid.
love your honesty
Thanks that’s appreciated!... I would guess by the likes vs dislikes on this film that not everyone agrees! 😂👍🎸
Just got another one as prices are rising. I love this one. Mine sounds absolutely awesome. It is very well made. I felt the first one, that I returned, was cheap. Now I get the SG , for the first time. 3:56 4:39
Gonna buy it and put a Duncan distortion at the bridge. Problems solved. What matters to me is that it is well built and comfortable to play; at this price range having to change the electronics is not a huge problem
@Scorpio Curse Yeah go for it!.. there's no doubt it's a great looking guitar and a Duncan Distortion would make it scream!
Besides the weird sounds and tremendous sustain (at least on mine), I find the biggest selling point to be the upper fret access, including 24 frets. That's why I bought it. Time to play some Phish tunes, lol.
The pots are audio taper. They do that for easier volume swells.
Loved this review!! So refreshing to see someone's honest feelings about a guitar. I still bought it anyway! Haven't had time to play it enough but I love it's sound. I play with higher gain than this demo and it gets me in Jimmy Page territory in my ears. Don't know if the circuitry or pickups have changed in the last 2 years?
Cheers man, I often moan about 'fancy switching' and wouldn't like that on any guitar so take that with a pinch of salt anyway, and others have pointed out that this was probably designed for higher gain stuff and not my 'boomer bend' nonsense so I can totally understand that I may have missed the point! 😆👍
Yeah, I think eventually people get settled on a specific sound or tone. It's cool to mix it up now and then though.
@@theguitaristas You were right to be turned off a little. This is one of my favorite reviews ever!
To be honest with a bit of amp tweaking I get better tones out of my old SG 400 but the modern certainly looks good and that out of phase option has got me interested.
Nice to here someone who gives a honest a pinion
Jesus Christ this is your best demo track! How you talked shit about this amazing guitar is world's beyond me..
Sorry man I just couldn't get comfortable with it... the odd shaped neck and all the fancy switching options just beat me! 😀✌
@@theguitaristas I hear ya brother I'm old school like yourself. These "modern" things require a bit more time for us old folks but man once you get the feel and adjusted...
And even though you didn't get along with it you made it sound truly stunning!
@@jahbrake9791 Cheers Jason that's really appreciated!
@@theguitaristas Maybe you should be negative more often!
Impressed by the looks, but not by the tone too much. What would be your bet for a budget SG, rather vintage styled than modern, any good options out there around 300is range?
Everyone raves about the epi LP special if you didn't get anything yet.
Hi..I just subscribed. I'm very interested in this guitar... You might want to try the Gibson version.. It has better tones but I can't afford it. Note: Towards the end of your noodling around some of your tones took on an almost Santana like tone. If I can ever repeat that, it will be worth that guitar's weight in gold to me!
Thanks for comment! I've no doubt the Gibson would be a a bit better but as you say too expensive! The thing that put me off this one was that I found the neck quite uncomfortable to play... so I think got off to a bad start? Sure it's got some nice tones in there but it's hard work... looks like maybe I found Carlos by accident! 😁 for easier Santana tones I'd recommend the SG Special. Cheers dude, whatever you play enjoy! 😎👍🎸
SG purists can be put off by the modern innovations featured on this model. But this just goes to show that the SG is a classic because it has outlived its time and yet remains relevant; Even critics agree the guitar is still hot and well worth arguing about 70 years after its invention. I rememberr when the SG was considered the best rock guitar or at least Duane Allman, Eric Clapton, John Cipollina, Mark Farner, Tony Iommy, Frank Zappa and later Angus Young thought so. This new version is my favorite and I thought myself a purist.
Thanks Gary! On paper the 'modern' does look like my dream SG but as you can see I personally didn't get on with it. Having just picked it up again recently I think that is maybe because of the asymetrical neck profile... I find it really uncomfortable and it just doesn't feel right in my hands, where as you (or the next person) could find it the most comfortable neck ever. I personally couldn't play it very well and that put me off... we got off to a bad start! Anyway I'm glad it works for you they are sweet guitars, and to me SG's are still the best rock guitars ever!
Gary- I would throw my personal guitar hero in the mix and that's Glenn Tipton- he SG'd early on then migrated to a Strat then to his signature (undoubtedly custom built) Hamers
"I think it's over-complicated" says the man with fuck-all ridiculous amount of amps behind him.
😂👍
I don't see what's complicated about having many amps. Specially when they all look to be straightforward tube amps.. I dunno
Bought the Modern like you have reviewed (EXCELLENT reviews I really enjoy them and very informative) Sent it back and got a Prophecy model- SOLID as a rock- they are both sort of the same but not. The Prophecy just has the "feel" and the sound from the Fishmans is really really good. Not crazy about the look of the prophecy- got the red version- meh. But the playability is just off the scale for me- frets were great, low action, no buzz. I picked a demo model at the store that was just spot on so the look was secondary. Tone and playability over looks every time.
Oh and dont diss the Grovers Mate! LOL Im from Texas and "mate" is the only British I know :) Other than Judas Priest, UFO and Black Sabbath songs- those are the extent of my British- Cheers! Oh and not to "Bang on" but any reviewer of anything who gives chapters goes to the top of my viewing list.
It's crazy how preferences vary from player to player.
I bought a Prophecy Flying V and totally hated it.
I thought the Fishmans were a joke. The asymmetrical neck was a pain in the ass, 24 jumbo frets on a 24 3/4" neck make the uppermost frets basically useless and the neck dive was so bad that by the time I finished adding counterweight to my strap it felt like I was playing a Norlin era Les Paul...lol. But it was a good looking guitar, I can say that at least. I think I'm just more of a traditionalist.
Just throwing my two cents in...
Think this may be my next guitar to pair with my Epi Es339 P90 pro. Wasn't even aware it had 24 frets but that might come in handy for some Megadeth 😂
I bought it for Phish, lol.
@@toddshockley they sound so familiar 😯 got a new band to check out lol
Saw Frank at knedworth 1977 or was it '78 .But was blown away !
🙌🔥
I have the gibson SG modern and ripped out the coil splits and the pickups and added seymour dunkin slash pickup in the bridge and the pearly gates in the neck
Yum
I have one an absolutely love it my favorite guitar I have prs's Gibson Les Paul's I don't know how much for to guitars and I think that that is an awesome guitar
It's great to hear that... if you love it and it inspires you to play that's all that really matters.
@@theguitaristas sometimes you just get a bad one I can only speak for the one I play
I'm glad I saw this. I really don't need another guitar, but I've been looking at one of these in trans black (just beautiful) and I've been pretty tempted. I still might, but this is making me think about it harder.
You might like it though! 😆👍
@@theguitaristas .. I'm also eyeing up the Classic and the Special, with p90 pickups. If I get one, I'm probably going to go that way.
@@miketripodo2879 That's the way to go! 👍
👍🏻👍🏻
All the reviews at stores have been over the top great? Probably too different from what you are used to. Once the brain makes up its mind that's it(imho). Was wondering what the weight is on these? I ordered one. Forgot to say it will be my frank moreno tribute guitar.
My friend owns this guitar and I've done his setups for years. It is a completely lifeless hunk of wood. The fishman pickups in his are boring and very "one trick" which is surprising because everyone on youtubes been raving about the Fishmans. Think that its paid advertising honestly. Maybe his guitar was made with wet wood or something because acoustically it truly is dull and non resonant unlike every other sg I've played beside it. Could just be a lemon, hope you are well!
Cheers Chuck… at last someone agrees with me! 🤣👍👍
I have the same guitar and can't believe all the positive reviews. It plays incredibly stiff and sounds almost muted, like the saddles aren't making a solid connection to the body. I hate it. I can deal with the neck shape and the dye, but it's like it doesn't want to be played! The pickups have an obnoxious, barky mid frequency that I've yet to find a fit for.
Glad, and sorry, I'm not alone.
@@evanw3729 Yeah, it does. And aren't these the same pickups as the Epi LPs? I guess having the pickups in a different place really makes a difference (?).
How was the neck dive on this with the heavy tuners.?
For me the least of the problems 😂
I found that a thick and wide strap put on backwards actually relieves any neck dive. That was a lot cheaper than adding a heavy bridge, heavy knobs, and a heavy strap button.
I think this would be a very good platform for fishman classics.
Okay, but foosty old dude in a room full of foosty old gear complaining that the ‘modern’ guitar sounds new… Seems like it’s doing its job right?
Fair point! 😂
The weak spot of imports are the cheap electronics and thick poly finish. But it is a looker
What fuzz did you used on this demo? Sounds very nice!
Check description box it’s maybe listed?
@@theguitaristas i checked it but i didn't find it
@@GuajoloteGonzales sorry that was an early film... I started always adding that info in description a while after... most likely was a big muff!
Thanks mate another great but honest review
The new prophecy looks testing to me have you reviewed that
Keep up the excellent work
Ps I have the Tony Iommi SG and that is unbelievable that
Brian
Cheers Brian, thanks for the kind words and support! No I haven't yet tried the Prophecy or the Tony Iommi (which I'd love!) but I got the new '61 Les Paul SG in for review next week so check that out.
I need one.
It's funny cause standard is cheaper without the coil splitting and I think it sounds better. Very nice playing though.
Thanks for nice comment @goggle boy - And also this 'modern' has a maple cap stuck on top of the body which probably affects sound, unlike the standard which is just a simple slab of mahogany like SG's always were.
The new ("Inspired by Gibson") Epiphone SG Standard is a great guitar.
I looked for some informations on the Epiphone Les Paul Classic and l discovered that they have the same switch to split pickups... I think it's too complex for me😂😂😂and if l look for some single coils there are some beautiful Squier 70s Stratocasters... I'm perfecly comfortable with my 50s LP Standard Gold Top... Cheers...
Hey Marco, the Goldtop is all you need until you try an SG with P90's! 😆
GG has these for 500 knicker… I’d like to say it would be worth getting for that then ripping out all the electronic guff and dropping in a set of Gibson pafs 🤷🏻♂ I say this because I have a set of pafs kicking about 🤔
Thanks Colin, your reviews are spot on , in my opinion anyway, you've never steered me wrong to date, I love my worn epi Cherry P-90 , was looking on this as an upgrade of sorts but, maybe not now, I also saw a official marketing vid &it sounded rough in that too, probably drift toward Epi LP classic in Black or Modern LP range tho the former would be favourite, thanks for all he great videos
Great demo , even tho you didn't like it .
😆👍 thanks man that was a long time ago!
At least the tone controls have numbers
Sounds like this one needs the amp eq'd different which is a pain in the ass
There was definitely that... but it didn’t feel good in my hands so I think I gave up on it! 🤷♂️
Remember..A guitar only sounds as good as the guy playing it...
Absolutely!… and I said right out that I wasn’t inspired and couldn’t play it very well. It might just have been me but the guitar contributes to how well I am playing and it felt and sounded wrong to me on that day so I was admittedly a bit rubbish.
So...I can't tell, does he like it?
No. We don’t. Not really. The push pull stuff is alright. But, a Gibson electric has a classic recipe. If the market didn’t feel that way, the classic Les Paul’s and 335s etc wouldn’t be the top sellers. Right? . That said. I like these videos.
Hey Philip, yep we agree there are already lots of great sounds possible from the classic format. Thanks for the comment!
In my opinion….the feature that makes this guitar so striking is also what ruins it, tonally, for me…..the maple cap!
Way too bright and brittle…..a hard pass for me.
Keep up the great reviews my friend.
Yes that's the thing SG's don't need a maple cap... its just wrong! 🤣
@@theguitaristas agreed
What’s with all the pinging when you pull or push the pots?
Its just the guitar is plugged in so the sound is resonating through the body 😁
@@theguitaristas I just picked up a Charvel DH24. It’s gotta go back, can’t do those necks anymore after playing my SGs. I think I’m going to have GC order me one of these and give it a try.
How is the neck dive on this?
It was the least of my worries! 😆
@@theguitaristas haha you look genuinely unhappy throughout this video 😂
@@lucjanssen8 🤣👍
@@lucjanssen8 So fucking entertaining, lol. Seriously, I guess I love watching people play interesting stuff on something they don't like, like making love to a relative or something.
How come Epiphone can't seem to get the AAA Figured Maple top to be symmetrical all the time? If Harley Benton can do it, surely Epiphone can. :/
cuz gibson arent either.. Symmetrical makes it look fake.
@@diddymies That's true. Gibson fail also.
@@diddymies I've just got one of these - fantastic guitar - figured maple is still a tad off, but I try not to look at it. ;)
Oh no. I just bought one.
Let us know what you think! 😆👍
Respectfully disagree. It even sounds awesome in your hand to me. But I agree with you about the maple cap; unnecessary.

Cara Frater,
It is really self evident what you problems with the SG Modern is. Everything you play on the Modern sounds terrible because you have a malignant personality which is channeled into every chord or lick you strum (or attempt to) on your incredible guitar (of which I am the proud owner of one as well! An Ebony SG Modern with gold hardware and an ebony fretboard.) Without a doubt this is is the best all around SG, it is the best bang for the buck period! I have been playing guitar for over 50+ years. I started with Blues and Mersey Beat in 1963 and bought my first SG in 1972 (it was a 1964 and to this day I am still partial to the SG.) You my friend are so negative you are poisoning everything you come in contact with! You are toxic beyond human understanding!
This is not a judgement call. I am actually trying to help you! I am a Mystic and a Magus from the Astrum Argentinum going on 50+ years along with my Music as well! I hope you did not get rid of your trans-black SG Modern! It has everything you could ever want in an SG+ (right down to the neck!) You are cutting your nose to spite your face.) Give this guitar some time...give it a chance! It is your magick wand! Alter your perceptions! More will be revealed!

Oh is that what it was! 🤣 I didn't like it so sold it quick... I'm a big SG fan but this one was trying way to hard to be something else. Glad you can make magic happen on yours though! ✌️
I'm so glad my edible just kicked in. Looks like I'm not the only writer following this adorable human.
So then put it down if you don't like the Sg
I sold this one... didn’t get on with it
I don't know, maybe it would be possible to get some juice out of this guitar... 🤔🤔🤔🤔
Coil split on an SG? C'mon... ridiculous! Put a pair of EMGs in it, and YES, it would be "modern"...
😁👍
I do feel weird sounding like Mr. Strat on this thing. It doesn't fit mentally.
What do you really expect for a $549 guitar?
We own much cheaper guitars that have a lot more soul... this a bit like an expensive collection of parts that don't really go together particularly well.
We get it, you’re rich
Considering some of the cheaper epiphone guitars have a better sound, that $549 comment does not hold water. Personally, I think Epiphone slaps higher specs and prices on their guitars today expecting the market to jump while not considering whether the tone justifies the effort. I mean it's not just Epiphone, but increased specs do not always equal a better guitar. I kick myself for selling my 1994 Epi Korean sg . It still remains my best sounding guitar I've ever owned. I was young so the Epi name threw me off into brand snob sell off mode. With age...comes wisdom and appreciation of a quality instrument without the name badge
@@JT-gm4fk You nailed it. I've never seen a bad color on a good horse..🥃😎👌
buy the gibson sg modern instead....i will....
I bought one, over priced junk, I've been trying to sell it no one likes it

Doesn't seem like you're very experienced at playing so how can you give us a good review on this guitar....just being honest..if I gave you a Holy Grail 59 Gibson LesPaul I think you'd make that sound like shit too..just saying ..thanks for the review..keep practicing !
