  • It was a big honour for me to be included in Episode 3 of Sky Arts Series 'The Art Of Drumming'. I was invited to talk about Keith Moon and demonstrate his style. In this video there's no talking, only drumming! Thanks to The Who for creating great music.

    I don't think most people can really appreciate how difficult this is to play; Keith Moon was as far from a conventional drummer as you could get. He did not play to establish a rhythm, he played along with the vocals or the main melody of the song. To him, drums were a lead instrument and he used his incredible speed to place fills in places where they weren't supposed to be, but he made them work. This song is full of them and the combination of constantly playing intricate fills along with keeping the beat with the added element of what is essentially a drum solo towards the end of the piece makes "Won't Get Fooled Again" one of the most complex drumming performances ever recorded - and she crushes it! Really amazing.

    • @danielfisch389
      @danielfisch389 Před 3 lety +26

      yes, Pete Townshend always stated that he (Pete) mainly was responsible for keeping the rhythm, and that Moon was 'something else'. Keith was indeed a lead drummer, just like Entwistle was a lead bass guitarist

      Very interesting comment. When I was trying to learn keys I had to "unlearn" following the vocals, I'm mainly a poet and the difference between words-with-music and music-with-words gobsmacked me. Moon is very much doing "talking drums" in this piece and it's an enlightening observation.

    Sina: I'm a 64-year-old, retired TV/video producer from NY & L.A. Worked with a lot of musicians. Seen more concerts of more top bands than I can remember. I started following your covers & originals about 3 years ago. Only wrote one comment before today, early on, telling you how extraordinary I thought your potential was. I fell behind on tracking your stuff for the past few months, but I'm finally catching up.
    After watching this, I can barely find the words. It's not about potential anymore, it's about mastery. There was a point -- I didn't note the time, I should have -- where you closed your eyes, leaned back, then threw yourself forward... and, suddenly, your hands were everywhere, and you became more than just the sum of your training and natural talent. You entered a space where you could do no wrong. I saw it. I've seen it before in the best drummers -- including Keith Moon. It was pure Zen.
    You have graduated. This doesn't mean you won't continue to learn. It doesn't mean you won't get better. It simply means that there is nothing ahead of you now but greatness. I think it's time for you to gather the right musicians around you, write some more material, and take your gift on the road. The world awaits. I would love to see you live.
    Thank you for the rare opportunity to be your audience and your fan, Sina.

      Russell, I could not agree more. I first saw Sina's videos about 6 months ago. The first video of hers I saw was her reasoning why Ringo was a great drummer. I always thought of him being good, but not among the greats. When that video was done some 15 minutes or so later, she got me believing Ringo may have just been a great drummer. From there I went on to check this young lady's videos.
      My favorite band is The Who. I have always thought Moon to be one of the greatest, if not the greatest. I saw them with Moon at Madison Square Garden a couple of times in the 70's. I came across this video here and sat in awe. Sina gave respect to Moon. She did not create her own interpretation, she emulated him. The same can be said about her other videos and the artists she pays homage to.
      There is no doubt Sina has a bright and wonderful future ahead of her. Her collaboration with other artists of her age group gives me hope that the music we grew up with, what we know as classic rock, will continue to be passed down for generations to come. Russell, you and I are of that generation that witnessed first hand the beginnings of Rock 'n Roll. With that said, I know you mentioned her writing some new stuff and I agree, I would also love to see her in a classic rock band that played the songs of our youth.
      Peace.

    Such a musical drummer. Her touch is insane, very very fine. She doesn't beat, she plays the instrument. I love her so. Being a pretty little girl is part of the draw, there's nothing wrong with that and it's not a cut-down, just a compliment. But the thing is how intuitive she is on the set. She's a champion. Her timing on these Keith Moon bits is perfection.

    As an old drummer who sadly can't hold a candle to Sina and also was fortunate enough to actually have seen the Who live in the 60's (when they used to smash their instruments) twice, I am TOTALLY amazed by her raw talent. At first when I saw her stick positions, I thought oh boy this is going to be rough, but soon threw that thought out the window once she started playing. Not sure how or where you learned to play, but you probably surpassed and smoked everyone around you. Thank you so much for taking some real classics to levels that few have ever gone. Hi Steve - like you I was there - I was in a warm-up band called Macabre for the Who for about six months before they became really big in 1964 - so I saw Keith play a lot - so Sina is much neater than Keith and way more efficient. Keith could ring out a tee-shirt and 3/4 fill a pint glass he put that much into it.

      Bravissima! Just like that was the spirit with which Keith played the drums. The drum had a dynamics according to the progress of the song and emotions it only served to keep time but it was an instrument to be played at 360'...a live instrument that transmits emotion. This was how it was played in the 60s/70s. Now few drummers play it like this with their soul. Bye god luck.

    It's Friday - TGIF - No Foolin'
    THE SONG - "Won't Get Fooled Again" was written by Pete Townshend. It was originally intended for another rock opera project called 'Lifehouse' which was eventually abandoned. Recording began as early as March 1971 in New York but, except for Townshend's Lowrey organ / ARP synth track, was re-done at various locations in the UK with recording engineer Glyn Johns helping in the production throughout April and May.
    Keith Moon had to carefully synchronize his drum playing with the synthesizer, while Townshend and Entwistle played electric guitar and bass. Townshend said, "“Keith could play to a prerecorded tempo exceptionally well, something that every good drummer can do today, but was unheard of in 1971.”
    The track was finally mixed by Johns on May 28. It was released as a 3:35 single on June 25, 1971 in the UK and in July in the US. The full length 8:32 version appeared as the final track of 'Who's Next', the band's fifth studio album, which was released in the US on Aug 14, 1971 and eleven days later in the UK.
    "Won't Get Fooled Again" entered the Billboard Hot 100 chart at #76 on July 17, 1971. It peaked at #15 on Sep 18, 1971, briefly holding that place until the 25th, and was last seen at #33 on Oct 9, 1971 spending 13 weeks on the chart. The album 'Who's Next', with the long version, peaked at #4 on the Billboard 200 chart on Sep 11, 1971 and spent a total of 42 weeks on that chart.
    The song's lyrics describe a revolution - the verses tell of an uprising, an overthrow, and the realization that, in the end, nothing really changed - "the new boss, same as the old boss". Whoever takes power becomes corrupt. In his biography, Townshend said the song was anti-establishment but that revolution was pointless - "It's not going to change anything in the long run, and people are going to get hurt."
    THE DRUMMER - Keith Moon discovered drums around age 13, playing first on a friend's set and then a cheap set his father bought. He was completely self-taught. He reportedly never took lessons, couldn't read music and rarely, if ever, practiced. He simply seized the sticks and began to play. He started playing professionally with surf bands and was a fan of The Beach Boys, Jan and Dean, and Elvis. He was also influenced by big band drummers like Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa. In 1972, he told 'Melody Maker' "I had just been copying straight from the records, but with the Who I had to develop a style of my own." He also developed a penchant for showmanship and his excesses, particularly when fueled by alcohol and drugs, were legendary.
    Not only was his style unique, so were his equipment choices. His setup sometimes consisted of 18 drums. He preferred the kick drum front heads off, used a combination of single headed and double headed toms, many cymbals, and his hi-hat was permanently locked in an almost closed position.
    He drummed with wild abandon. Often, instead of a regular groove, he played so many complex rolls and fills that he seemed to be soloing. He hated drum solos, telling 'Melody Maker' in 1975, “Drum solos are the most boring time-consuming things. I don’t think of the drums as a solo instrument. Drums are there to set the beat for the music.”
    Despite that, Moon remarked that many drummers “don’t paint with the kit. That’s what I like doing. I like painting, adding color and effects and shocking people. Constantly, while I’m playing, I’m thinking two bars ahead. That gives me a chance, if I’m in the middle of a roll, to do something I’ve already thought out so I can get out of the roll…”
    Sina has covered Moon's playing twice, in "My Generation" and "Pinball Wizard". Still, it's always a challenge and Rosanna asked her about it.
    RO: Compared to the restrained precision of Roger Taylor, Keith Moon was the exact opposite. What was your approach for this cover?
    SINA: It's very hard for me to explain how I try to cover Keith Moon. I try to understand why he did the things he did, how it felt for him. I asked myself: How would I play when I had waaay too much energy and I didn't know where to put it. Keith put all of his spare energy into the drumset. I listened to Won't Get Fooled Again and tried to memorise the fills I liked most. Keith gets wilder towards the end of the song and I also tried to do so. But most of the fills I played are improvised and more 'in the style of' Keith Moon.
    RO: Keith's drum kit and setup were so unique. You use a more traditional kit. How did you compensate?
    SINA: I never played a drumkit without a hihat and can't really imagine what that would be like. When I cover Keith Moon I forget that he has such a weird setup and just play what I hear and feel on my regular drumkit.
    FUN FACTS: The title isn't actually used in the song since "don't" is substituted for "won't" in the lyrics. Portions of "Won't Get Fooled Again" were used as the theme song of the popular US TV show 'CSI:Miami' during its 10 season run.
    THE ICON - Niki is back in charge, to everyone's relief!

    I came back to this video on the anniversary of its release and watched it again. Even though I know the song really well I’m amazed at how Sina gets those powerful strokes in after the extended synthesiser parts. As an indication of how energetically she’s hitting the drums, there’s a bit toward the end where she has a moment to move her hi-hat back into position. Absolutely brilliant ❤

    • @gregbr100
      @gregbr100 Před 6 měsíci +4

      Lee, Sina has said that when she makes a video she usually does several takes and uses the best parts in the final. I have watched this video well over 500 times and my guess is that this was done in 2 or 3 parts. If you watch the Hi-hat position at 6:25 and again after the break at 6:59 you will find it at the same location. I suspect that they switched to the last segment because it was the best and most dramatic with Sina flying up off her seat. The Hi-hat move was just a bonus. There are a few other interesting things that happen in this video, like a miss on the right crash, but it's still my favorite and one of her best.

    This young lady not only did the song justice, but uncannily recreated the drumming style of Keith Moon himself! Keith never used a high-hat, only cymbals. In this video you see Sina keeping her foot on the high-hat very still, thus using it like it was just another cymbal. She also matches Keith's frenetic style of drumming to a T (Arms flailing, bouncing on the stool, etc.)! All she needed was wild, wide-open eyes, and she would have been Keith Moon incarnate! Excellent job young lady .... I tip my high-hat to you! LOL

    • @saaamember97
      @saaamember97 Před 4 lety

      Okay, what I should have said is .... Keith did have a hi-hat in later years, but he rarely used it. Here is an article from MusicRadar titled "10 things you didn't know about Keith Moon."
      "He didn't use hi-hats much …
      A unique element to Keith’s (early) set-ups was the lack of hi-hat. He did add a hi-hat in later years, but it wasn’t a big part of his drumset. Predominantly he used a lot of ride and a lot of crash. A good example of this is in the ‘Who Are You’ video of the band in the studio, and for the hi-hat 16ths, Keith is leaning over to the hi-hat set to his right."

    Sina... What a great song to wake up to! When I saw the notification, my heart started beating faster in anticipation of what I knew was going to be a great video. I was not disappointed. I had to watch twice, right off, because my eyes teared up in sheer joy the first time, watching you pay tribute to Keith Moon.
    I was 17 years old when this song came out. Playing in garage bands. We sucked so badly it hurt the ears! I had to play bass because no one else wanted to. We sound proofed my friends basement and played down there before I gave it up because I liked riding and working on motorcycles more.
    But, to the point. We had a drummer who was a little younger than me by a year or two. But the sheer energy of this guy was incredible! His hero was of course Keith Moon. This kid was good. He was better by far than any of the rest of us were. Me and the guitarist were playing full stack Marshall and Ampeg tube amps. He easily kept up with us in volume un-miced. We didn't know how to, or could afford a proper set of mics for a drum kit. I'll never forget him. He broke so many skins from his animal attacks on them, we all pitched in and helped him keep his kit in order.
    Any way, here we are today and you are playing a cover of what was the anthem of my generation. (No pun intended) I have not read anything but Juliet's comment yet but I'm sure most of them are saying the same as me. Great job Sina! You are truly a world class drummer. Aside from your training in a drum academy, you really listen to many other drummers to figure out what they are doing. Just like a guitarist studies other great and famous guitarists. You take the licks you want and incorporate them into your style. And you do have your own style. We have seen you can play anything. From Salsa to jazz to uncommon rhythm patterns. You can play anything. Sina, I wish all the success in the world for you. You truly deserve it.
    Best Regards... 🎶

    While Sina’s cover of Dance with the Devil is impressive for showing how super speedy timing is done on that number and with one drummer, this tribute to Moon is far more impressive because Moon was a “whack-a mole” controlled explosion of fills and half beats which is exemplified in the chaotic build up to the break, rather than the bursting power-finish which this number is popularised for. Those few seconds before the break are my favourite example of Moon’s brilliance. Beautifully reconstructed Sina.

    This has to be my favorite Who song, undoubtedly for the percussion. I closed my eyes and saw Keith playing it. Sina has power and soul and of course, technique. She doesn't just play the tunes, she channels the artists. Every time I listen to her I learn something new. She is a breath of fresh air!

    It would take me 50 years to learn to play that -- and I still wouldn't play it as well. And I'd be dead by then. Excellent job. This song is so complex, I doubt Keith Moon ever played it the same way twice.

    • @concretebuilding
      @concretebuilding Před rokem

      you'd be correct, he never played this piece the same way twice. I've listened to so many different recordings and never did he play it the same way, including the solo before the big scream. That's the thing to note about Keith's drumming at all - He rarely played anything the same way twice, so you get a very different performance each time. Many people don't catch that.

      Michael Yolch ... Come on Keith Moon has never been a drum genius... If you think HE was the best drummer, it just a joke. He did not have 1/100 of the drum technics than other drummer during the same period...At the end of the 60s, there was King Crimson...listen to the drummer...(album In the court of the Crimson King...) Also listen to the album « Birds of fire » with Billy Cobham as a drummer (end of the 60s or beginning of the 70s...Same thing with ELP, Carl Palmer the drummer...All of them and many many many others were much better than Keith Moon... This guy was so over evaluated, it’s incredible...

    That has got to be so satisfying to channel into Keith Moon and become a pert of him for even a few minutes. She nailed this and I'm sure it took her weeks of dedication to say, " Ok, I'm ready".

    Recently a pretty accomplished young drummer commented on Keith Moon’s art of drumming: “For me as a drummer when I hear a normal song I know what the groove is. And I can play it, I can imitate it. And that’s not like that when you hear a Keith Moon song. Every time he plays a song it’s different. [...] And I try to not memorize what he played on the track but to get the feeling that he had. He does very much tom fills. He also uses many cymbals at weird times.” With regard to his role in a band she added: “I don’t think he sees himself as a drummer or as a time keeper but as another melody instrument. He’s soloing all the time when he plays a song. He either plays nothing or he plays drum solos.”
    Well Sina, today’s post would have made the perfect visual and audible comment on the lines cited above. The drums are a far cry from anything “normal” - be it 1971, be it today. One can feel the weird accents Keith (you) set(s) all through the song. I didn’t conduct a “stroke by stroke” comparison. But it is obvious to me that you “feel yourself through” the song, as your rendition runs so smooth and fluently. - And the drummer (you) adding further melodic lines: no doubt on that point either. With the drums being an orchestra in themselves as well as having their own role in the “score”, one might call this style “an orchestral way of drumming”.
    Thanks once again, Sina, for your unflinching pursuit of keeping handmade Rock alive! Best wishes - Stephen

      To be honest I think that is the hallmark of the WHO. Pete Townsend always said that John Entwistle was a bass player who thought he was a lead guitarist .... just a collection of fantastic musicians in the same place at the same time.
