Football's Most Dangerous Rivalry

  • The rivalry between football clubs Rangers and Celtic goes past typical name calling and dives into violence, racial slurs and pure hatred.
The rivalry between Glasgow's "Old Firm" sides is the most famous in world football. It's the game's flagship loathing, proof of the power of the sport to inspire profound levels of tribal loyalty and a near-Pavlovian revulsion at anything to do with a rival. We examine the situation and try to get a handle on the political, religious, and national identity clashes that have shaped the rivalry, speak to fanzine editors on both sides of the divide and travel with the Bhoys' away support to a match at Tannadice.

A few years ago, my brother was in Glasgow. After checking into his hotel, he went to bar next door for a beer. As soon as he walked in the entire bar went silent. Almost immediately guys burst up out of their seats and advanced on him. The bartender pointed at my brother: "YOU!! GET THE FUCK OUTTA HERE!!"
Turns out my brother had stumbled into a Rangers bar wearing a green jacket!
He had no clue of the rivalry. He said, "What the hell did I do?!?"
Instantly the bartender realized the situation: "EASE UP LADS! HE'S A YANK!" My brother said, "Yeah. I'm from California." The whole bar relaxed, and several fans came over to explain to my brother the rivalry and it's history...and they bought all his beers for him too! They ended up being really cool to him.
He later told me he thought he was going to wake up in a hospital, or worse.

Some linguists class Scots as a separate language to English, others class it as a dialect of English. Most Scottish people mix Scots grammar and vocabulary with standard British English grammar and vocabulary, to different degrees. It's quite common in many languages that there are dialects that can be considered close languages, which most other speakers can't understand.

This was a really great docu-video! I went to Glasgow for the first time last summer and my sister and I on the bus into the city ended up sitting next to these two local men who were best friends, despite one being a Celtic fan and the other a Rangers fan. We’re Canadian and knew next to nothing about the rivalry that they explained to us, and later that day in the city I recall seeing a lot of people wearing the football shirts of both teams. I think the fact that they were able to put their differences aside shows that ignorance can be cured when you make an effort to get to know different people instead of just keeping away. There’s a long history there that shouldn’t be forgotten but maybe some traditions that don’t need to be continued. Glasgow was a beautiful city too!

    • @thundazz2718
      @thundazz2718 Před 8 lety +74

+ravi8490 It's not so much the sport, rather the history behind it. In the USA sports teams don't really have that much history to it other than it was founded for some local lads to have fun and then grew in to a big thing. But this rivalry isn't to do with football as much as it is to the history of the cultures that both club represents. At one point, the British Protestants (Rangers) invaded Ireland and subjugated the Irish Catholics (Celtic). The Irish fought back and thats how it is. Both sides feel they are in the right and the other is in the wrong.

In Britain, the visiting team's fans sit in a separate area from the home fans, and they often get a police escort to and from the train station/car park for their own safety. In Scotland, when Rangers and Celtic play, the number of hospital visits due to violence triples.

People think Celtic and rangers is giant. It is in Glasgow but nobody cares about it. If your American you need to look at American football fans. Singing real songs, embarrassing dancing, moaning. That is pretty much what happens. If you have ever been to this match correct me if I'm wrong, I'm comparing to the fans during the match. Wigan and Bolton is bigger than this for the fans. This is why...
We fight all the time, smoke goes off unless the stewards are on guard for checking, loud fans, chanting towards players and fans.

If you hear anyone saying "I DONT LIKE ALEX SALMOND" or "I DONT LIKE SNP"...
THIS VOTE IS ABOUT SCOTLAND'S RIGHT TO ELECT ITS OWN GOVERNMENT... IT HAS NOTHING WHATSOEVER TO DO WITH ALEX SALMOND OR THE SNP.
DONT LET POLITICAL IGNORANCE RUIN THIS OPPORTUNITY.
Do you know... This is the UK's legacy of success in our history of being better-together is as follows...
The UK has the 3rd lowest pensions in the 34 OECD countries of the world
The UK has the single most expensive childcare in the European Union
The UK has the second lowest-paid economy in the entire developed world
The UK has the 3rd longest working hours in the EU
The UK has the lowest number of holidays in the EU
The UK has the 8th highest gender inequality pay gap out of the EU's 28 countries
The UK has the highest likelihood of poverty in disablement in the EU
The UK has the highest rail prices in Europe
The UK has the second highest housing cost in Europe
The UK has the highest fuel poverty rates in Europe.
The UK is the 4th highest country of wealth inequality in the entire planet!
But surely these awful figures cannot be possible when you read the following Scottish statistics...
Now, finally, did you also know that in all of the UK's elections for Westminster ever!... Not one vote cast in SCOTLAND has ever mattered! Because of the Westminster numbers, whatever government England votes for, the UK gets. So we have no democracy here!!! 4 decades of tory rule that we voted against is proof enough, and our defiance was punished by the closure of all the mines; closure of all the steelworks; closure of all the shipyards losing hundreds if thousands of jobs. The term used by Westminster's Thatcher when these industries needed some assistance was "let the markets decide". Funny how when the greedy bankers collapsed everywhere they were bailed out to the tune of over a trillion pounds of our money... Not a mention of "let the markets decide".
    FACTS:
Fact: Scotland has an oil boom waiting to happen on the West Coast, but Michael Hesaltine signed a cessation of any form of oil exploration in the entire area in the 80's to make way for nuclear submarines which Scotland doesn't want!
Fact: Scotland has shown its revulsion time and time again to nuclear weapons but they place them here against our countries wishes. A recent contingency report was carried out a out the feasibility of relocating them in Portsmouth. The report stated that it was unfeasible because the detrimental risk to the area of an incident was too high. (Ok for the Clyde though)
Fact: Scotland, with only 1 Tory MP, was forced to take the shocking attack on the poor & disabled called The Bedroom Tax, even though as our nations government, Holyrood voted to utterly reject this awful tax on the poor. Westminster gave us it anyway!
Fact: We are led to believe that the oil in our waters is finished and its a dying industry. Yet 13.5 billion has been invested by oil companies in the last 2 years alone!
Fact: The Clair Oil Field is about to open, and on its own has over 650 million barrels which will be extracted over 20+ years with production reaching a hundred thousand barrels a day!
Fact: Scotland gives more to Westminster than it gets back. Do you really think they'd be so keen to keep us if we were being subsidised like they'd have us believe?
Fact: Westminster has amassed over £1.3 trillion debt and still growing at nearly £6000 a second. Thats another £516 million today alone which YOU will have to pay for.
Fact: Of the 178 countries that have gained their own independence across this planet, not one single one of them has ever asked to reverse this independence, and very few of them have the assets we have.
SCOTLAND, WHAT ARE WE SCARED OF? WE HAVE A CHANCE... WITHOUT A SINGLE BULLET BEING FIRED, WITHOUT A SINGLE DEATH... TO GET OUR FREEDOM AND INDEPENDENCE, ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS PUT A CROSS IN THE YES BOX.
SCOTLAND, ITS TIME TO STAND UP AS A NATION AND VOTE YES ON THE 18TH OF SEPTEMBER... AND BECOME A FREE AND CARING NATION AGAIN!!!
VOTE YES AND SET OUR COUNTRY FREE!!!!

Still following them religiously (until he passed away 2 years ago) from here in Canada since emigrating from the auld country in the late 50’s. Yet when my interest in the ‘Beautiful Game’ peaked & despite not having an Italian bone in my body, because the Serie A was/has & always will be very popular here in Toronto-Canada, I fell head over heels for AC Milan. A team I still proudly support to this very day. That said the more I read, watch & hear about this rivalry, the more I want to get a piece of it too. And of course by cheering on the lads in the green & white if & or when I do, as well.
