Football's Most Dangerous Rivalry
Vložit
- čas přidán 3. 07. 2012
- The rivalry between football clubs Rangers and Celtic goes past typical name calling and dives into violence, racial slurs and pure hatred.
The rivalry between Glasgow's "Old Firm" sides is the most famous in world football. It's the game's flagship loathing, proof of the power of the sport to inspire profound levels of tribal loyalty and a near-Pavlovian revulsion at anything to do with a rival. We examine the situation and try to get a handle on the political, religious, and national identity clashes that have shaped the rivalry, speak to fanzine editors on both sides of the divide and travel with the Bhoys' away support to a match at Tannadice.

I'm American, but my boss is from Glasgow and a huge Celtic supporter and has been telling me about the rivalry. He said his mom wouldn't allow him to wear Celtic gear in public until he was around 15 for fear of his safety if wound up in the wrong spot of Glasgow
I wasn’t allowed a Celtic top until I was older. My mum was worried incase I got attacked. That was back in the 90’s though when it was a real possibility. Nowadays its not as dangerous but things still happen.

A few years ago, my brother was in Glasgow. After checking into his hotel, he went to bar next door for a beer. As soon as he walked in the entire bar went silent. Almost immediately guys burst up out of their seats and advanced on him. The bartender pointed at my brother: "YOU!! GET THE FUCK OUTTA HERE!!"

This was a really great docu-video! I went to Glasgow for the first time last summer and my sister and I on the bus into the city ended up sitting next to these two local men who were best friends, despite one being a Celtic fan and the other a Rangers fan. We’re Canadian and knew next to nothing about the rivalry that they explained to us, and later that day in the city I recall seeing a lot of people wearing the football shirts of both teams. I think the fact that they were able to put their differences aside shows that ignorance can be cured when you make an effort to get to know different people instead of just keeping away. There’s a long history there that shouldn’t be forgotten but maybe some traditions that don’t need to be continued. Glasgow was a beautiful city too!
The humor in this episode is priceless! They just sit around, drink, and come up with witty things to say about the other team , and its really funny too! Good on you lads!

Yup. Partisanship for its own sake gets no one anywhere.
Being an American I thought people are crazy about sports teams here, this takes the cake. Although this I think is much more of social/cultural/political rivalry than the actual Football. Please correct me if Im wrong.
+ravi8490 It's not so much the sport, rather the history behind it. In the USA sports teams don't really have that much history to it other than it was founded for some local lads to have fun and then grew in to a big thing. But this rivalry isn't to do with football as much as it is to the history of the cultures that both club represents. At one point, the British Protestants (Rangers) invaded Ireland and subjugated the Irish Catholics (Celtic). The Irish fought back and thats how it is. Both sides feel they are in the right and the other is in the wrong.
There are lots of other rivalries just as intense as this, some more so
+343ethan343 please name some
+ravi8490 Nothing in American sports compares to the animosity that is Rangers and Celtic. They don't segregate the fans at American sporting events. In Britain, the visiting team's fans sit in a separate area from the home fans, and they often get a police escort to and from the train station/car park for their own safety. In Scotland, when Rangers and Celtic play, the number of hospital visits due to violence triples.
People think Celtic and rangers is giant. It is in Glasgow but nobody cares about it. If your American you need to look at American football fans. Singing real songs, embarrassing dancing, moaning. That is pretty much what happens. If you have ever been to this match correct me if I'm wrong, I'm comparing to the fans during the match. Wigan and Bolton is bigger than this for the fans. This is why...
We fight all the time, smoke goes off unless the stewards are on guard for checking, loud fans, chanting towards players and fans.
Straight after an interview “yous getting a buckfast for the bus” hahahaha fucking quality Scottish fitbaw man

I just love football rivalries like this. There is so much passion and fire and I think that to certain extent such fire should always be part of football. "Some people believe that football is a matter of life and death. I can assure you it's much, much more important than that." ─ Bill Shankly
I don't know, I've always thought that it was somewhat ridiculous. In a way I'm happy they dedicate themselved to football rather than being say, religious fanatics, but it's kind of the same energy, at least they keep it between themselves, most of the time.
However they should just be honest about what they do and simpoy meet up every other week for a scrap, I really fail to see the connection with football.

El Salvador and Honduras legit fought a war against each other because of football
Not really. DONT LET POLITICAL IGNORANCE RUIN THIS OPPORTUNITY.
Do you know... This is the UK's legacy of success in our history of being better-together is as follows...
The UK has the 3rd lowest pensions in the 34 OECD countries of the world
The UK has the single most expensive childcare in the European Union
The UK has the second lowest-paid economy in the entire developed world
The UK has the 3rd longest working hours in the EU
The UK has the lowest number of holidays in the EU
The UK has the 8th highest gender inequality pay gap out of the EU's 28 countries
The UK has the highest likelihood of poverty in disablement in the EU
The UK has the highest rail prices in Europe
The UK has the second highest housing cost in Europe
The UK has the highest fuel poverty rates in Europe.
The UK is the 4th highest country of wealth inequality in the entire planet!
But surely these awful figures cannot be possible when you read the following Scottish statistics...
Now, finally, did you also know that in all of the UK's elections for Westminster ever!... Not one vote cast in SCOTLAND has ever mattered! Because of the Westminster numbers, whatever government England votes for, the UK gets. So we have no democracy here!!! 4 decades of tory rule that we voted against is proof enough, and our defiance was punished by the closure of all the mines; closure of all the steelworks; closure of all the shipyards losing hundreds if thousands of jobs. The term used by Westminster's Thatcher when these industries needed some assistance was "let the markets decide". Funny how when the greedy bankers collapsed everywhere they were bailed out to the tune of over a trillion pounds of our money... Not a mention of "let the markets decide".
FACTS:
Fact: Scotland has an oil boom waiting to happen on the West Coast, but Michael Hesaltine signed a cessation of any form of oil exploration in the entire area in the 80's to make way for nuclear submarines which Scotland doesn't want!
Fact: Scotland has shown its revulsion time and time again to nuclear weapons but they place them here against our countries wishes. A recent contingency report was carried out a out the feasibility of relocating them in Portsmouth. The report stated that it was unfeasible because the detrimental risk to the area of an incident was too high. (Ok for the Clyde though)
Fact: Scotland, with only 1 Tory MP, was forced to take the shocking attack on the poor & disabled called The Bedroom Tax, even though as our nations government, Holyrood voted to utterly reject this awful tax on the poor. Westminster gave us it anyway!
Fact: We are led to believe that the oil in our waters is finished and its a dying industry. Yet 13.5 billion has been invested by oil companies in the last 2 years alone!
Fact: The Clair Oil Field is about to open, and on its own has over 650 million barrels which will be extracted over 20+ years with production reaching a hundred thousand barrels a day!
Fact: Scotland gives more to Westminster than it gets back. Do you really think they'd be so keen to keep us if we were being subsidised like they'd have us believe?
Fact: Westminster has amassed over £1.3 trillion debt and still growing at nearly £6000 a second. Thats another £516 million today alone which YOU will have to pay for.
Fact: Of the 178 countries that have gained their own independence across this planet, not one single one of them has ever asked to reverse this independence, and very few of them have the assets we have.
SCOTLAND, WHAT ARE WE SCARED OF? WE HAVE A CHANCE... WITHOUT A SINGLE BULLET BEING FIRED, WITHOUT A SINGLE DEATH... TO GET OUR FREEDOM AND INDEPENDENCE, ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS PUT A CROSS IN THE YES BOX.

I'm English, we haven't got a fucking clue what Huns and Fenians means.
well you're fucking thick then
Ross Johnson Nope, we just don't give a shit about your little Sectarian nonsense. Keep it up there.
ojideagu i know I'm actually glad that rangers or Celtic didnt join the premier league because there was speculation of it happening.
ojideagu Implying I'm not English too
Ross Johnson
Go and ask the average Englishmen in the street what Fenian means. I'll still be waiting 30 minutes for the correct answer.
Honestly one of the best things I have watched
The truth is what Mark Dingwall said. It's nowhere near as bad as it once was. The 70s and 80s were crazy and dangerous inside and outside grounds.
Abdul Rafiq, Is like the intellectual version of Mr Bean.
No
Funny enough, the actor who plays Mr. Bean has a master degree in some engineering field.
maybe the muslim version
Did you just call a Muslim member of an English fascist group “intellectual?” Fuck me.
Intellectual? You should meet him. He makes Mr Bean look like Einstein. Rangers fans can't stand him.
Thank God for the subtitles.
MrMatthiasSchneider I'm going to assume your not Scottish 😂
MrMatthiasSchneider ikr
Say this prayer Dear Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner, and I ask for Your forgiveness. I believe You died for my sins and rose from the dead. I turn from my sins and invite You to come into my heart and life. I want to trust and follow You as my Lord and Savior. In Your Name. Amen welcome to the family God loves you Peace and love
Am I the only one seeing double subtitles?
They are not that hard to understand lol
I know this is a long shot but does anyone have an idea of the soundtrack behind the start and throughout of the film?
The rave style tune is suck it by Irish Leprechaun 👍
My Dad was born in Aberdeen & my Mom in Glasgow. And after they married, my Dad, whether by choice or not became a dyed in the wool Hoops fan. Still following them religiously (until he passed away 2 years ago) from here in Canada since emigrating from the auld country in the late 50’s. Yet when my interest in the ‘Beautiful Game’ peaked & despite not having an Italian bone in my body, because the Serie A was/has & always will be very popular here in Toronto-Canada, I fell head over heels for AC Milan. A team I still proudly support to this very day. That said the more I read, watch & hear about this rivalry, the more I want to get a piece of it too. And of course by cheering on the lads in the green & white if & or when I do, as well.
I've heard that while it's dangerous for a Protestant to go to the wrong parts of Glasgow, and it's dangerous for a Catholic to go to the wrong parts of Glasgow, it's dangerous for a sheep to go to all parts of Aberdeen.
The best old firm games are the cup games, unbelievable atmosphere, although it's not at the nest stadium in Glasgow, ibrox, it still holds my best memories growing up.
IMO one of the best documentaries ever made
I'm Scottish irish American raised in Chicago my mom is from Glasgow and my dad from county down. Great segment brought back good memories of me as a teenager going to the Barras and off to parkhead to watch Celtic and Rangers play it was rowdy but I never felt my life was in danger.. God bless the people of Glasgow best city in the world
A lot of rocket scientists and Russian world champion chess players here I see
I thought you guys were gonna talk about Red Star Belgrade vs Partizan
WeekzGod me too lol
Yeah, we don't like each other but it's not a religious thing (hasn't been for a long time) and there's stories of much worse and more intense football rivalries throughout the world. I remember reading about the head of an ultra group who raped a rival on the grave of his friend. Which isn't quite as bad as calling each other Fenian and Orange bastards for 90 minutes according to Vice.
Was it just me that was fuckin vibin tae the intro
Why the hell are a muslim and a german getting involved in a catholic protestant conflict?
Because Protestants fucking stink
Cause its just a bit of banter
Mate 😂😂😂
"what do you think it is about glasgow that generates this kind of gang culture?" "its hard to put your finger on it"
really? i dont think its that hard to figure out. combine abject poverty and a two tiered society where the rich and the poor are vastly separated with religious and cultural friction and voila, you're more or less left with why glasgow and the west of scotland is the way it is. doesn't take a genius to figure it out.
im Irish and a Celtic fan but its not 1916 anymore people should just enjoy football and shut up about English vs Irish. (my opinion)
Well said brother
Well said brother
Shaun Corcoran I’m a rangers fan but yes I totally agree
same here, family is irish, but born in England. Keep the politics out.
Dean Quinn
Dean I agree with you to an extent I have family all over England and some wear the English Jersey with PRIDE and fair play to them but CELTIC and rangers is totally different match day especially it's part of the experience no club's in England have the passion sometimes too strong but that's the reality of it that I love and makes it 1 of the best derbies in THE world 🍀☘🍀☘🍀☘🍀☘🍀☘
Thank God for subtitles!
love the unbiased video mate...
So Celtic is supported by the Irish Catholics, and the Protestant Unionists support Rangers. Who are the Scots who want independence from UK supporting?
Dunfermline.
The definition doesn't apply to all supporters.
I'm personally a Scottish, non-religious Celtic fan, like a lot of other and same for Rangers.
But there is other Scottish teams if you didn't notice...
Ross - Orbit Eqoze Yes, I realise that its not so black and white, not all Celtic fans are Irish and not all Rangers fans are Unionists.
I know other Scottish clubs like Dundee, Hearts, Kilmarnock, Aberdeen..but Celtic and Rangers are the two biggest clubs with most supporters, and both are not Scottish oriented clubs. I remember when i watched the derby i saw only Irish and British flags so i was curious and wondered what Scottish people think of that..
Celtic was founded upon Irish Catholic Immigrants in the East End of Glasgow, there are just as many Scottish as Irish that support Celtic, probably more Scottish nowadays many with Irish heritage. There's not as many Catholic's that support Celtic as everyone thinks, it's an open club to all religions, always has been and always will be unlike Rangers oldco and newco.
I support celtic
I respect the rivalry, and have a soft spot for Celtic, but no Rivalry in Britain is the worlds most dangerous. South American and Eastern European clubs would have a word to say about that.
ignorant americano
cameron lenaghan He's actually right dude.
Albort Ross hell no, scotlands much more dangerous than anywhere else regarding football rivalry in fact, in glasgow, youd be fucked just being an american, thats not a diss, just saying its much more rough over here than you think.
Im an aberdeen fan and i wouldne even seta foot in glascow. very rough place , go there and your opinion will change fae sure
***** I know they can be vicious mongloids, but its nothing compared to some of the stuff that goes on in Eastern europe and South America. Mainly because they simply don't have many guns.
Rather than associate with Ireland or England and the queen, why not celebrate being Scottish?
Léon Noël difficult one to explain that mate x
because of history
the queen is the queen of th euk which means scotland too lad
Rangers are proud to be Scottish and British
@@Ahhrboan1 and not the proud Scottish identify free from England?
Bruh that intro joke had me dyingggggg 🤣
Can'f find the Rangers in FIFA 16
Not in it
Lookn forward to play an old firm but seems the Huns just are not good enough
+Justin Hawthorne No prob, u will find them in FIFA 17 on Premiership! ;)
+Justin Hawthorne Can't find a united Ireland on any map. There's still that part in the North that's labelled British.
+Justin Hawthorne I just looked again, and I still can't find a United Ireland on any map. That part in the North still looks like it belongs to Her Majesty. Funny that, eh?
And I thought Philadelphia Eagles fans were fanatical...
lol philadelphia are nothing compared to fans of river plate, boca juniors, galatasaray, fenerbache, panathanakos, olimpyakos, celtic and rangers
I'm starting to get that impression.
American Football Fans aren't even in the same league with some crazy soccer fans.
Not even in the same sport.
Is this a rick roll?
What I find funny is the first shot of him in Glasgow is his feet walking on soaking wet ground.
That's Scotland for you.
Funny how I am watching this for the first time today and then found out that there is an old firm derby happening today
