In this video I will tell you a tale of revenge. This is a story of a club who was stolen away from the people of Wimbledon, but instead of just taking it, their fans banded together and formed a new club, AFC Wimbledon, from the ashes of the old. And from the absolute bottom of the English football pyramid, they would rise like a pheonix, all the way up to the same division, as the club that was stolen from them, MK Dons.

What an excellent Crash Course in Wimbledon history. Love to see it. -John
!!!
Holy! Been watching crash course since I was a kid, I’m honored. 🤯
Wow love you crash course 🥰🥰🥰 you guys have helped me with school soooo much, our teachers even put you on in class😂
@@FatAsianOfficialyou made a video about Wimbledon. Honestly would have been surprised if John didn't notice
crash course i see you all the time and i never knew you had a history in football mad respect you made science class kind of fun
Mk dons are still the most widely disliked club in England 20+ years after the event. English fans are not to be messed with
It’s not a sport over there, it’s religion
@cfcblue8 its a cult and also makes for really misanthropic people
Deserved.
The delicious irony is that the original Wimbledon was widely disliked for their anti-football style of play and unsportsmanlike thuggery on the pitch. Now they're viewed positively because of this resurrection arc, as well they should.
There's a popular football magazine that still refuses to name MK Dons in their round up of the results and league standings. They just leave a blank space.
“The Lakers moved to LA where there are no lakes. The oilers moved to Tennessee where there is no oil. And the Jazz moved to Salt Lake City where they don’t allow music.”
Baseketball reference, noice.
Grizzlies moved to Tulsa... Supersonics at least retained the rights to the name, and if/when basketball returns to Seattle the team will be the Supersonics. Funny story, I saw Pearl Jam play in that stadium back in 2009 (now used for the hockey team), and Eddie Vedder changed the lyrics to to their song Supersonic to be about the basketball team leaving.
As someone who has lived in Utah..... I laughed.
@@djohnnebaseketball, is that the combination of basketball and baseball?
and the "North Stars" (Hockey) of Minnesota went to the south...where there is no north 😆

If a football fan doesn't get a little misty eyed over that goal to beat MK Dons in stoppage time, I don't know what they have for a heart
The eyes are misty, trust me
Damn man i guess something fell in my eye
I was at that match, people were screaming and crying everywhere
Dude... My wife couldn't be arsed about football. But her face was truth: That shit transcends. The otherwise-objective caster absolutely orgasmed, The Child was consumed, and I personally would've dove from the top on that pile. Idgaf if it takes a lifetime, that's the love.
Not gonna lie brother, some dust flew into my eyes at that very moment.
RIP John Motson. "The crazy gang have beaten the culture club" what a line.
The context was their players walking out before the game in flashy white suits. It added a whole extra level of meaning
You've just reminded me that Motty is dead 😢.
RIP
@@chrischarman8707Liverpools white suits were the ‘96 final against Man Utd not the’88 against Wimbledon
The culture club refers to Liverpool dominance of the old first division in the 80’s
@@chrischarman8707Yeah you got the wrong final there bud. Liverpool's cultured possession based style of play in contrast to Wimbledon's was the reason for Motson's monicker
meanwhile in Brazil, a coach who had been said to be a wash for the past 10 years, makes a come back to win both the Copa do Brasil (FA Cup equivalent) and Libertadores (Champions League equivalent) in 2022, only to be sacked and replaced by the coach who he beaten in the Copa do Brasil final, and 4 months later get signed with another club, and have that club not only win the Copa do Brasil, but eliminating both of the teams bittest rivals in the quarter and semifinals and beating the club that sacked him the year before in the final, and this year be called to coach the Brazilian National team
thats gotta be one of the biggest I'm him moments eer
From the perspective of a São Paulo fan this story is very different. São Paulo are the ones that decided to give Dorival a hand after he was unjustly fired from Flamengo and to show his gratitude Dorival drops São Paulo at the first opportunity and takes the entire coaching staff with him just as the season is starting, which leads to an early exit from the state league and a terrible prospect for the coming season. Some may say this kind of attitude justifies him getting sacked from Flamengo, even after winning the Copa do Brasil and Libertadores, Flamengo just didn't want to get done dirty like São Paulo was.
And losing against Argentina and Uruguay 😂
@@ShinigamiInuyasha777 Nope, you're thinking of Diniz, he isn't the manager of the national team anymore, the comment is talking about Dorival Junior, his first match as Brazil's manager was the win against England.
@@ShinigamiInuyasha777 that was Diniz, i was talking about Dorival Jr :V
"Mama didn't raise no snitch"😂
Honestly, the FA should've completely disowned this sham of a club. Franchising should be banned in the beautiful game.
Sounded like the FA tried to but the courts said no.
@@daryanguyexactly that, the FA not only tried too, but when Wimbledon fans went to restart their club, the FA did a lot more to help them than whats stated in this video 😂.
The FA was all for the move😂
Don't forget to mention the sham ownership Wimbeldon had. Completely gutted the club of its assets
They've come back bigger and better
true that and nice pfp too
This story is the true power of what sports can be: To drive people together and not tear them apart.
I truly have never seen a story like this. To have your club ripped away from you, instead of drinking it away, the fans decided to rebirth the club from the ashes, climb the pyramid, and face-off against the team that was once them and originally stole and erased their history from them...all in all to beat MK Dons.
Im a Man United fan at heart, but these underdog stories are really where I just stand in awe of. Well done, AFC Wimbledon. I support you know.
Also, Im glad John Green is a part of Wimbledon, as I knew him from Crash Course. He and his brother Hank were life-savers when it came to my high school education, so I will always hold the 'Vlogbrothers' in high regard.
Austria Salzburg has almost a similar story
They've beaten MK 3 times in 16 meetings 😂
@@_peepyopee and all of those 3 times meant more than anything MK have achieved in their entire 'history'
@@kmahtaI think the Austria Salzburg stroy might be even worse, given that it was a local brand that just happened to become globally famous who bought them instead of straight up foreign investment

Holy shit, is that kid he grabbed still alive?
He is! He apparently said it was the best moment of his life
Yes, he is. Ronan Curtis later said that he and his teammates made sure to keep him from getting trampled in the midst of all that. Obviously, we couldn’t see it because of the mass of humanity in the way, but yeah, he’s gonna be a fan of AFC Wimbledon for the rest of his life.

Sometimes I think “it’s been 20 years, let Milton Keynes have their club, it’s not like Arsenal weren’t formed in relatively the same way.”
Then I remember the guy who used to send me “you’re welcome” from Moana whenever Dele Alli scored for Spurs.

Describing Milton Keynes as being in 'Northern Greater London' is one of the funniest things I've heard today.
I went to AFC Wimbledon vs MK Dons the other weeks and when that Ronan Curtis goal went is it was magical, the goal was worth more than football, the goal was for the original club and for the fans
There is a similar story about to get written in Salzburg. Reb Bull stole Austria Salzburg so the fans founded their club new and started in the lowest division. This season they faced of for the first time ever in the national cup. Austria Salzburg is in the third division right now and I look forward to the clubs future.
4:20 Milton Keynes isn’t in Northern Greater London, it’s in Buckinghamshire. Which is 50 miles away from Wimbledon.
Dude swung and missed on a bunch of the American stuff, by quite a bit.
I was looking to see if somebody else noticed that.
For reference, Minnesota is nicknamed Land of 10,000 Lakes. Not 1000 lakes.
But overall, top tier content as always!
At a certain point, one would surely stop counting. I suspect that's earlier than the 1k mark
@@paulie-gnope Minnesota has actually have close to 12,000 lakes than 10,000 or even 1,000
@@theodosiusii408My point is that past 1k it no longer matters: it is then officially a metric f-ckton of lakes, which extends to positive infinity.
Hey just throwing this in here but how insane a number is that, now just a bit North and a bit over, Ontario, the province in Canada, has a 3rd of the entire worlds lakes in it. NA has so many lakes 😂
Didn’t expect you to watch one of my videos, but appreciated.
You must be joking - I think I was playing Football Manager 2010 (coincidence??) when I heard this story for the first time (I'm a fan outside of England). I could not resist starting a new game playing AFC Wimbledon and taking them from semi-pro, back to the Prem and European competitions over a span of a dozen seasons. It is still one of my favorite saves I ever did in the game. I may revisit that challenge again in the future.
Hi Fatty, this is the best coverage I have seen in those 20 years. Congrats for a good job. I went to the old Plough Lane many a time.

The fact that people in the US seem to think franchising a sports team is all fine and dandy is beyond insane. What even ties you to your team at that point? Money plays a huge role in european soccer too, especially in english football, but jeez at least Chelsea still plays in Chelsea, Liverpool still plays in Liverpool and ManU and ManCity still play in Manchester
We don’t think it’s okay. There is a huge outcry when moves are proposed or happen. Just look at the Arizona Coyotes in the NHL and how pissed everyone is. But we’ve got a bunch of shit head owners and commissioners who only care about squeezing as much money as possible into their pockets. And the commissioners are a big part of the problem, the leagues themselves want the money too so they don’t care about ripping a team from its fan for a chance at more cash
@@liamvlasimsky3026 If you want to encourage life long loyalty from a fanbase in the States, I think you need to drop all the names (Raiders, Dolphins, Lakers etc) and use the name of the city as the primary moniker, with a generic Rangers, United, Wanderers, County, City, Town, or such added.
In England we don't name clubs after animals. We name them after places.
Before I'm corrected, The Wolves doesn't count. It is the abbreviated form of Wolverhampton Wanderers. You could not buy them, move them 15 miles up the road and call them the "The Birmingham Wolves". There would be a riot. That is why MK D**s are so hated.
Sports have been taking a nose dive in popularity over here for a multitude of reasons, franchises included.
@@liamvlasimsky3026 Arizona Coyotes? You mean the old Winnipeg Jets.
Technically Chelsea play in Fulham (there's about 100 yards in it), but as Jimmy Greaves said-"Chelsea. It's the greatest name in the world. Think about it".
They were my local club growing up - the first football match I saw was Wimbledon vs Blackburn at Selhurst Park & my school sports day was at Kingsmeadow Stadium (before AFC Wimbledon moved in) so I have a soft spot for them.
It was such BS when Franchise FC were allowed to buy the club, but I’m happy to see them back home.
Quite funny for me recognising pretty much all the places shown in the video 😂
i was born and raised in milton keynes and ive always been annoyed that the massive stadium in the middle of our city wasnt home to a team of our own :(
Absolutely brilliant video.
The old site actually has flats on it as the sanction for a supermarket never went through.
But thanks for the video top class. That curtis goal still makes me go cold everytime I watch it.
And the flats are named after Wimbledon FC players of yore.
Great video, introducing the history and the controversy! Well done! Just one thing, on 17:25, you introduce the next clip to be from 2022, when it actually happened in 2024. Other than that, perfect stuff from you. Thanks for telling the story
As a afc Wimbledon fan this is an amazing video
so happy to see you post! Since the luton town career mode I have grown up and learned more about soccer through your videos/others. Thank you BMINUS :)
You can ask any English fan which club they hate out the two, regardless of which team they support, and they will say Mk. The city is dead and empty anyway
Calling it a city is hyperbole. And I should know, I tried to get through it when the motorway was blocked, which I eventually did. Hardly saw a soul. It is a soulless place.
@Ned-Ryerson the only exciting part of Mk (apart from the concert I was seeing) was leaving or the only arcade I found in the shopping centre
Love the video, Just what I needed to start the day, Please keep going
This is an amazing watch. Keep up the good work 👏🏽
I am an Arsenal fan and I hate MK Dons.
A lot of people forget Charles Koppel in all of this
Chairman from 2000-2002 who was the one who sold the club to Winkleman and helped the deal get done. He pulled a John Fisher and did 2 consecutive fire sales of the team’s stars in the Winter window, selling them to promotion rivals, fired Stuart Murdoch for saying that he was in favor of a new stadium in Merton, and basically sandbagged the team to keep them in the 2nd tier while he was there.
First video of yours I’ve seen. I can’t express enough how phenomenal this was. Great story telling, jokes and graphics
Nice. A few inaccuracies and mistakes but hey ... you certainly captured the flavour of the circumstance. Thank you. It is I think still the greatest story in football - both as AFCW and also the old WFC story too. Those cannot be stolen. Nor can they be bought. Winkleman will get his cumuppence some day ... I just hope I am alive to see it.
Great video dude, liked and subbed. You clearly have immense passion for the sport. This was all the more enjoyable for being an outside perspective, i remember the outrage and shared it, even though it had nothing to do with me.
I remember the talk of them moving to Dublin a good while ago, excellent video and im delighted like most to see them back.
Tony Blair tried to move them to Northern Ireland to play at a new national stadium. Wanted them called Belfast United. Everyone told him that was a terrible idea.
Although it probably is what led to The Belfast Giants Ice Hockey Team, so it all worked out
I know many CZcamsrs have already done videos about Anthony Precourt attempting to move the Columbus Crew but I think it would be an interesting video done in this style. It's a great story overall. Love the video.
Yeah, the issue isn't so much that American sports fans are okay with teams moving, it's that they can't do much about it legally. The city of Seattle STILL hates the NBA for moving the Sonics to Oklahoma City. The NBA realized pretty quickly how stupid it was to abandon the Seattle market, but the city has basically refused to provide a single cent for the NBA if they want to start a new team there, which is a hardline position that almost no city governments take.
I almost cried watching this... Amazing writing dude
Thankgod this was recommended to me in my feed. Legendary video my friend 👏

Seriously one of the best football essay videos ever made! 5 stars!
Been a Wimbledon fan since 1978. It warms my heart in this cold, dangerous world that we have this video. Plus all these comments about MK C**ts from fans of various clubs, who know that but for the grace of God, it could have been THEIR club. NEVER AGAIN. Thanks everyone x
Excellent. Well done! Great video. I have big soft spot for Wimbledon. Used to enjoy going to the old Plough Lane with my club - Portsmouth.
My first ever game that I went to was Wimbledon F.C. vs. Tottenham. My dad and his family all support Spurs and so I was taken to this game as a 6 year-old because we had a great uncle (married into the Spurs supporting side of the family) who lived near, and supported, Wimbledon.
That great uncle was Wimbledon through and through. Not long after that game, the whole MK DONS thing happened and so my great uncle is one of the people who helped found the modern Wimbledon AFC. He still attends matches, despite being in his late 70s.
Dude this was bloody fantastic. What a video. Makes me want to pick up FM and lead AFC Wimbledon to the top as well!
Great recap of the famously appaulling story, with a happy ending, of course. I'm not a Wimbledon fan and have no justification to be one, but damn near every FOOTBALL fan should hold them in high esteem. I know this is almost unhelpfully off-topic but I also love their ground banners: "The club that came from nowhere", "We are the resurrection, we are the light", "Not in the wider interests of football"... Just a magical comeback, Winkleman doesn't deserve any sympathy even after becomming more genuinely interested in football and appearing to genuinely wanting MK to succeed.
God, why am I about to cry watching this especially when the goal happens. Lord, the beauty of sport.
Great video but that ending with them finally beating MK Dons again, playing the music from haikyu was just, chef's kiss.
I’m a Pompey fan. My missus and her family are lifelong Wimbledon fans. We were there and it was the most craziest I’ve ever seen a football ground. incredible moment
This is why football is much more than just a game
I have been anticipating your latest video 🤓
That end made me belly laugh, momma sure ain't raised no snitch with you.
Great video to a grand story of football. When I was introduced to the reborn Wimbledon FC, a few other cities in Europe already went for the same after the Don's example. Chemie Leipzig was founded fresh by students and maybe more importantly for the mainland: so was Austria Salzburg after the club had been bought by the energy drink brand that should have stayed in fringe sports and never ever come into football.
But (gods be thanked!) no club that I have in mind was ever moved to another town or city, like Wimbledon was.
Maybe 2nd Bundesliga's Wehen-Wiesbaden counts as such but it was two clubs merging into one bigger club, which has happened quite a few times in football history. It's sad that they lost their traditional home and club history of the SV Wehen though.
Wehen-Wiesbaden is 2nd division now??? Good for them. I lived in Germany in 2016 and was an Au Pair for a kid that played for Wehen-Wiesbaden's youth team. Always had a soft spot for them since then but never kept tabs on them.
Wehen is a tiny, tiny town. Would love to revisit the training facility sometime, it had a spectacular view of the area.
@@maxanderson755 Wehen is great, Wiesbaden is great, the club being a mix of the two isn't.
@@refragerator I honestly don't know the details of the merger so I can't comment on that but, at least the two are only 15-20 minutes apart. Pity to see two clubs disappear and become one but I suppose it is better than one or both failing.

Great video, you missed out the part where the club were trying to move to Dublin though.
MK Dons were not the first franchise in English football. It was Arsenal, who were previously called Woolwich Arsenal based in Woolwich in SE London and were moved to North London by a wealthy businessman in 1913.
its not the same, we moved out if necessity for financial reasons and we moved in 1913 btw.

Another interesting story is that of Portsmouth FC. They were in the Premier League and won the FA Cup in 2008 but over the next 5 years they were bought by multiple owners and asset stripped. It lead to fans buying the club in 2013 and saving it from absolvency because the millions of debt the asset strippers loaded on to the club were then paid off by the fans. The fans sold the club in 2017 to former Disney CEO Michael Eisner and the club now look set to rejoin England's second division (the Championship) for the first time in 12 years.
The 2 players who assisted and scored for Wimbledon (Lee Brown and Ronan Curtis) both played for Portsmouth before they played for Wimbledon.
