Chunky was actually in the GBA remake of DKC3! Granted, he hasn't been in anything NOT made by Rare (outside of being a Spirit in Ultimate), and that appearance was just a small one in one of Funky's mini-games, but it still counts!
I forgot to add that as a note! Let’s just say it hasn’t been anything substantial since DK64. But yeah, it still counts for something!
More than anything, it's the best thing Illumination done since the original Despicable Me. It didn't set my world on Fire Flower, but it had charm and style.
Also, for me Fred Armisen is one of the biggest SNL stars in the 2000's and he is a very talented impressionist so he is known to be able to do many voices, but yeah his Cranky sure felt different than I expected. Unlike most people I didn't hate his rendition, but he wasn't my favorite.
I oughta check out some of his SNL stuff sometime!
I didn't like his performance. I blame the direction he was given, but he's more talented and I feel like his portrayal completely missed the mark and fell flat. I didn't hate it per say, but it's easily the weakest performance in the whole movie. A SERIOUS re-write and direction overhall is needed for a DK spin off movie. I was not impressed.😕 I hope Seth doesn't ruin it somehow too. Personally I would have gotten Will Ferrell or Kevin James to be DK, but Illumination went with Seth, so...

I watched it in french (I'm French) and they had a lot of popular cartoon voice actors, like people who did hundreds of voices before. It felt so good to hear the voices. By the way, the comic Super Mario Adventures (made by a japanese guy) already did a plot where Luigi is caugh by Bowser and Peach is a badass that doesn't hesitate to fight the koopalings, so yeah to people complaining about the "girl boss" thing being unexpected... it's not new ahah.
Nah, Peach has been getting stuff done as far back as Mario 2.

@@TheCartoonGamer8000 and even in the super show which i tink it's clear many folks working on tits film maybe grew up on or at least wanted to take as a major inspo where she's a pretty active main part of action a lot of the time and is a bit more rough n tumble than the games would later depict.
I don't get people's obsession with making Peach a badass. That's DAISY'S roll. If Peach is a tough fighting Princess AND dainty what does Daisy have left? Peach is basically an Olive Oil arc type. I'm fine with her being a little active, but she has to GROW into it for character development. I kept saying making her more dainty and possibly kidnapped in the first movie and than have her GRADUALLY grow into a badass in the sequels. THAT would be am example of character development. Let the audience grow with her. Mario had to grow. He was PERFECT. Peach should have been the same. Even Bowser was finding his footing a bit. Peach being super cool and badass right away diminishes her potential for character growth. Also it's a Super MARIO BROS movie; not PRINCESS PEACH presents a Super Mario Bros movie. Peach isn't Daisy or Zelda. She needed to take more of a backseat. Oh and I'm tired of the SMB2 and SMASH arguments for Peach because SMASH isn't cannon to the lore and SMB2; as I keep stating, is Mario's DREAM and his overall interpretation of Peach, not her actual character lore-wise. Also Super Princess Peach comes WAY later in the lore and would be better told as a separate solo Peach film. I would have started her weak. Make her grow strong in the sequel. THAN have a spin off solo movie where she shines. Making her "strong" from the get go actually hurts her character, but this is 2023. We're not ALLOWED to show women grow as strong characters. They're just AUTOMATICALLY amazing.🙄
Definitely felt a big budget version of the super show, especially with the use of license music in the film, and in that aspect it was pretty enjoyable for me .
I was honestly surprised by the movie. Its not breaking new ground or anything, but they were able to take something as simple as Mario and give it, at least a little bit of depth (even more impressive if you consider how strict Nintendo is about that kinda stuff). I'm also really surprised how little that "Illuminations" magic seemed to bleed into the film. I get that the whole scene with the dog was necessary to establish the ideas that the plumbing business wasn't super successful, but I feel like that sorta thing could of been handled a lot differently? Feels like a scene out of another kids cartoon, or maybe the "main character gets blamed for something that wasn't entirely their fault because the accuser doesn't wanna hear the excuse" trope really rubs me the wrong way. I'm hoping that if they choose to follow this up, we get to see a lot more of the world and maybe go deeper into the lore side of things. I think this movie was trying really hard to establish groundwork to ease any explanations they have to do in a future film.

I’m really glad you touched on “Driving Me Bananas” being replaced by “Take on Me”. I actually mind it so much that during my second viewing in 4DX, I managed to time it out so I could just pop my AirPods in and enjoy the actual song that was supposed to be playing during that scene! (I know I’m a lunatic) I was laughing so hard, it was insanely fun. If you haven’t had the chance to check out the 4DX version, it’s worth a drive just to do so!

I have two thoughts on this movie. As a normal movie, it has a pretty predictable plot and is clearly a movie made for kids. The soundtrack (not the score) is badly used and none of them should have made the cut and replaced with Mario music. It is pretty great on its own. However, as a Mario movie, this was pretty much what I wanted. The animation was stellar, with it being some of Illumination’s best work. The attention to detail in this movie was some of the best I have ever seen. It was a love letter to many Mario games and I loved how they visualized everything. There were so many great visual details and references (Punch-Out Pizzeria, the blue shell Koopa using his shell to destroy Rainbow Road, and Kamek dressing up as Peach were some of my favorites). I also dug the musical score. There were so many great uses of music throughout the games and I caught a lot of them. It is energetic and exciting. The characters and voice acting were overall great! Bowser was easily the highlight for me. Jack Black killed it and him singing “Peaches” was amazing! Charlie Day was also great as Luigi. Even Chris Pratt was better than I expected as Mario. Finally, the tease at the end with Yoshi was great. Overall, while not one of the best movies ever made, I had such a joyous time watching this movie and it was absolutely worth seeing. I’m stoked for future movies and cannot wait to watch this movie again.

@@cesco6694Maybe Justin Timberlake; since he was a surprisingly good BooBoo, but higher pitched. Also he was HUGE in trolls, so that could work from a marketing POV.
This movie is like a big, gross Sloppy Joe on family dinner night. Its messy, not really that flavorful, and maybe even a little rushed... but MAN was it made with love, and that alone just sells the entire thing.
I like that analogy, and not just cus it’s making me hungry.
I really enjoyed this movie. It was a fun watch, and I'm not just saying that as a long time Mario fan. But here are three things that came to mind afterwards:
What do you think of the possibility of a Donkey Kong or Luigi spin-off film?
What did you think of that final post credit scene?
What do you think about Wario being the main villain in a possible Mario movie sequel?
I'm thinking a Luigi/DK spinoff seems likely, if not a direct sequel. The final post credits scene was cute, but I feel would've had more weight to it if Yoshi's weren't seen earlier in the film. And I feel Wario (and by extension, Waluigi) would be natural fits for villains in the sequel, probably working with Bowser.
I like how Spike was Mario's rival, but didn't overstay his welcome. A similar method should be used with Wario and than maybe have him in an ending credit scene seen with Bowser to establish he's going to team with Bowser in a third one. It should be built up a bit. If Wario were in a sequel right away without context and working with Bowser we wouldn't know much about him or WHY he doesn't like Mario so much. Maybe they could reference the comics where they flashed back to their childhoods and establish the rivalry there and than show Wario here and there as an adult, letting us know a bit about his character, but still building towards a reveal by the end that in the third movie he's working with Bowser. Than in the 3rd have Luigi help Mario thwart Wario and he becomes angry that he's bested by Mario ONLY because of Luigi's help. Than he's seen kinda down trodden; until Bowser introduces him to a friend and future partner in crime. Waluigi; son of Forman Spike. Boom. Magic. THAT'S what I'd do. What do you guys think?
Amazing videogame movie!! Dk is back!!!

I had a great time watching. I went with my friends and the theater I was in was full of families laughing and having a good time, and put me in a good mood.
The movie itself was OK, the easter eggs were easy to spot but the music references caught me by surprise a bit.
Only complaint is it should've been longer. Some things moved a bit too quick and Toad definitely needed some more screentime and character establishing though he was admittedly one of the most entertaining characters as is lol.
And YEAH if they pulled Chunky and SWANKY from the depths, it really makes me hope a DK movie is coming next cause I need even more Kong action. Tiny, Candy, Funky, Lanky, Wrinkly let em in on that silver screen clout. And of course Kremlings gotta show up, would love the kremling rivals from barrel blast being K.Rool's main entourage.
I appreciate hearing your perspective on this Malik. As a fellow Donkey Kong diehard, I found myself questioning if this movie will make new DK fans, and the creative direction they went with the movie really presented the Kongs as this culture of bad ass warriors. I wonder if this will generate interest in a new DK game or a DKC movie. Overall, I think the movie was a solid B and lays a strong foundation for future Nintendo movie adaptations to follow.
Definitely agree on a lot of things, music changes were obnoxious, and Cranky’s voice just didn’t work. But I also didn’t like how fast paced the movie was and how little screen time Luigi got. I still had a blast with all the cameos, humor, visuals, and every single scene with Bowser and DK. I’d give this film around an 8/10
The music was great to me, even the licensed ones. People get too pissy about small things.

i'm tired and probably delirious and not sure where else to say this so i'm saying it here (spoilers by the way but why would you be in the comments of a spoiler video if you haven't seen it):
i saw the movie the other day and that short quiet scene in the pizzeria during the climax actually came close to eliciting an emotion from me (and it's very rare that i get emotional watching media anymore).
i know it's a common beat that movies typically have and it's not really doing anything special, but i think there's something about both the score behind it and the fact that this is a character i've known for almost two actual decades that i'm seeing have this moment on a really big screen that plays my heartstrings like a sombre violin

Was really hoping more of the past playable kongs would have cameos. They had to model extras anyway so why not use more of the iconic long lost kongs. But whatever. Maybe when we get a DKC movie b
I wanna see ALL Kongs; including Uncle Kong, Fedora Kong, Bluster Kong, and Eddie the mean old yetti... Kong? Maybe? Maybe the monkies from DKC3 that thrown coconuts at you or Manky Kong too. Oh and Ookis from Mario, because they did appear in Yoshi's Island DS and are kinda connected to the Kongs. Chained Kongs from SMRPG as well.
Good review.👍 Not entirely sure, but I think Kiddy WAS in the crowd at the fight. Also I wasn't a fan on this take of Cranky; should've used the TV series version. If he's in a solo DK movie the writers will have to work harder on his character. The writing missed the mark and I didnt really like the VA's take. Also I thought the escort Kong WAS Funky, but apparently it was Swanky. That doesn't really make sense, but I'm just glad the character made it in some form as I've always liked him since his introduction in DK2; more than 3's but that appearance is ok. Also you're right. No Funky in the garage is a TOTAL missed opportunity. Also; to be fair, I don't like Seth and was afraid he'd ruin DK with his performance. Thankfully he was enjoyable and did his job; but I preferably would've liked to have had the voice actor from the cartoon or a diffrent VA. I would LOVE a separate DKC movie because we deserve better than the Crystal Coconut VHS tape/DVD. I'd like to see maybe a blend of DKC Returns and Tropical Freeze or maybe DK64 blended with DKC 2 and 3. More DK music and less regular music; my complaint with Mario. We needed more game music and I wish we got that original score over Take On Me. Welcome to the Jungle would have been cooler. The DKC series as a whole has the greatest video game music EVER in ANY video game, period. Bar none! We NEED those now ICONIC tracks in a DK solo movie. Ok enough on DK. Let's talk about the Mario cast. Peach was fine, but I wanted more out of Luigi. It was unnecessary to have him kidnapped and could have done that in the sequel. Peach got kidnapped by the end so that worked for the story. Maybe her and Luigi will save Mario in the sequel. Everyone else was amazing and I look forward to them growing. More Mario music in the sequel and they'll hit it out of the park yet again. Anyway that's my thoughts. I loved all the DK stuff because I'm a GIANT DK fan and an even BIGGER Mario fan!
I just saw the movie today and I adore it.
Freedom Planet is pretty fun. High recommendation from me.
I know the whole back and forth isn't fun but if DK can again be a grown up DK Jr., thus not wasting that character, I'm all for it. As for my view on the movie I really like how they cleaned up the chaos of Mario's canon to something more concrete, like aside from DK being Cranky's son we also have Toad and Captain Toad being the same character here. I also loved the DK stuff! Personally its a 8.5 or B+ for me.
As much as I'm a fan of your content, I unfortunately can't watch this because I just want to avoid spoilers like the plague.
I know the movie released almost a week ago in theaters, but since my parents didn't want to go, I'll have to wait until it releases on prime (which hopefully isn't long).
So, until I could watch the film for myself, I'll have to sit this one out. Thank you with all due respect.

I know the movie was released on prime days ago, but since my family had other plans (waiting for my relatives to come over, my dentist appointments, etc.), I had to wait *LONGER* to watch it. Sorry about that...
By the way, I think my favorite moment in the movie was the "Peaches" song; my family thought it was hilarious, and I felt like I wouldn't be surprised if Bowser turned into Peach himself!
