I love that this song was originally written as a breakup letter to her alcoholism, but she said herself that others interpret it as a breakup song to someone and that everyone can interpret it the way it fits for them. She's such a damn good artist!!

Many people, I think, see these lyrics as breaking free from some abusive lover or something along those lines. For me, and I'm probably not the only one, it's how about depression and anxiety and other mental issues can 'chain you down'. To me, this song is like a cry of relief and liberation from getting out from the bottom of the well.
Think of it as a sequel to "Missile"
For me personally it's about breaking the chains on addiction. I've been sober from alcohol and painkillers for over 5 years so this song really speaks to me.
Both interpretations are possible.

@@alexsrecife Definitely, like I said in my reply to the other comment, it's very nice to see the lyrics having different meanings for each person. Dorothy may be singing about a old lover but for some people it's about mental issues or addiction. It all comes down to how the person listening to the song interprets it.

This song is my new favorite! My abuser died not long ago and this song makes me so happy and sad at the same time. He was my stepdad and he hated me so much. I could almost feel that hate through the years even when I had no contact with me but his death set me free from that hate and I am so much lighter now. So grateful for music like this!

I’m so sorry you went through that. I’m happy you can feel that peace. I went through an abusive marriage and even though it was years after he divorced me when he passed away, all I could feel was like a wet heavy blanket was being lifted off my soul and felt a deep happiness and peace. I felt light like what you said. You deserve to feel that. I’m glad you do.

I swear there's something about Dorothy that's just immaculate. It's damn good rock, but it feels like there's far more substance and she's incredibly distinct from a ton of rock in the absolute best way possible.
I've been a fan of Dorothy since "Raise Hell" was played on Pandora's ad. "Rest in Peace" has only been in my head for 20 mins and it's already my new favorite! I fucking love these epic blues!

Wow, that voice reminds me of a country singer of 1970's and rock band of the late 1960's to early 1970's, of female singers. She is doing outstanding job with her voice.
Gretchen Wilson is the only country artist that I can think of to carry this off. Her Baracuda and others are the best. If you haven't heard them give those a listen. She rocks and does as well or better than Heart!

I think this song can also be applied to anyone you encounter on a regular basis that takes advantage of you or is abusive in some way towards you. I've had toxic friendships this song fits. Hearing it helps heal those broken pieces of my soul. Plus she has one of the most amazing voices I've heard in years.
