Susan Kelechi Watson was so amazing in this episode. Her goodbye to Rebecca just destroyed me. And then her conversation with Randall about Deja being pregnant made me laugh. Her performance as Beth over the entire series was just masterful. I want her to be in all the things I watch from now on! More Susan! Put her in every movie and TV show!

I had the privilege to be there for my grandma. We played it out similarly, with the immediate family going through pictures and telling stories around her bed. I can attest that they DO still hear you. Gram opened her eyes once and nodded to me when I talked to her, and she reached up and grabbed my cousin's hand without opening her eyes when he bent down to tell her goodbye.

It was the 1st episode that I actually liked a bit. Im not a This Is Us big fan. I have sorta binged thru it just to see how they end 'the series of weekly tears' and how they end Alzheimers dx (yes, Ima RN who has taken care of a few dementia patients). Making some of the past characters into train employees was nice. Glad to see that Katie made her flight in time to say goodbye. I had a rocky relationship with a mom. I was just thinking about this. I feel like it's such a brilliant and beautiful depiction of motherhood through Rebecca's story. The flashbacks are all about her building her family but kind of in the shadow always of Jack - the obvious hero. And when the kids grow up they often don't appreciate her and she starts to fade - both her story in those episodes and her actually mind in the story. And slowly her relationship with her kids heals and they start to recognize her again. It's just really stunning and subtle and impecible!

I totally see your view but I don't think it's been ALL about Rebecca all along. I mean, this episode depicts the death of the matriarch of the family very beautifully. However, I think the show is as much about Jack and the Big 3 as it is about Rebecca. At least that's how I see it.

Sadly, my best friend who introduced this show to me ("You've GOT to watch it!", she'd enthusiastically tell me) passed away 3 years ago. While watching this episode I found myself talking to her. Berta, what do you think? Isn't this a great ending for her and Jack? And then I cried for many layered reasons...
One of them being that I was in Kate's position when my mom passed in December the same year as my friend. I had forgotten my ID at home and missed my flight. Unlike Kate I wasn't able to say goodbye to mom in person before she passed. So yeah...I was a big bally mess watching this episode.

@@AdrianaLopez-sy6yg I loved the train analogy. And the fact that it had been foreshadowed in earlier episodes was just so clever and perfect. With my mom, we struggled whether to bring her home to Kansas where the majority of our family is buried or leave her in Colorado. She didn't specify in her will. But as we were going through her things we found a slip of paper where she had written about how the Colorado snow was perfect in the morning. When I put it on Facebook, my cousin saw it and nearly fell over. The words happened to be song lyrics to a kind of obscure Christmas song that was playing in his shop at the moment he saw my post! Sounds too crazy to be real but I swear it's true. So we found a small cemetery that had a beautiful view of the mountains and we buried her in her beloved Colorado.

I absolutely loved the Marcus Brooks storyline! Yes, we had to think about Jack’s gut wrenching death again but Fogelman makes it less sad by “zooming out” (as William tells Rebeca) and showing us how the end of his life was the beginning of Marcus’ life as a researcher.
Death is less sad when we realize how meaningful life is and how our lives touch so many other people’s lives - sometimes in small but significant ways. The fact that Jack’s life touched the Brooks family by a piece of advice that simultaneously stretched back to the very first episode and went forward to the future made that it especially poignant. Life really is a “Circle Game”. Dan Fogelman is a genius! and I’m going to miss this show so much! 😢❤️☺️

@@Mixmastermonk80 I think the Brooks storyline had 2 purposes. The fantastic 'misdirect' the show has mastered was that throughout the episode we were given the impression that Marcus was the father to Deja's baby, only for Malik to appear at the end.
The more detailed connection to the first episode comes from the conversation between Jack and the Brooks father at the coffee machine. Jack shares the advice that he was given in the very first episode about 'when life gives you lemons'. That then became the Brooks family motto. Marcus suffered a setback with the cancer medication, has siblings reminded him about the family motto and he went on to develop medication to combat Alzheimer's.
So one of Jack's last acts before he died ended up inspiring someone years down the line to discover medication to help the disease that killed Rebecca. Brilliant writing about how one life can touch another and the subsequent ripple effect.

The writing is phenomenal. The symbolism of her life and moving through the train was simple but brilliant.
I really also liked the tie-in with Jack and the other dad in ER, who’s child was injured and lived while Jack died. That child, Marcus Brooks became a doctor and researched Altsheimer’s looking for a cure and later cancer. All the little nuances - beyond excellence. I have loved this show. Truly one of the best series I have ever seen. Many thanks to everyone involved in this show. No bad language, no excessive show of skin - it can be done!!👍👍❤️❤️

Aaah…. This was just beautifully sad! To connect on such a deep, real and raw level is such a gift in life. As a nurse who has cared for the dying it is truly beautiful to help others connect at such a critical time in life. There are two times in life that we have little control-birth and death-its during these times we can, I believe, learn much about being present and experiencing the full capacity of our souls!
Big thanks to the writers, to the actors-for your choice to be present!
God bless and keep you all.
PS: ‘Final Gifts’ is a beautiful book written by two nurses who have many years of helping others pass.
They taught me and helped me to ‘see’ as others are passing they truly are caught up and greeted by the angels.
