If you go direct mount stem the steer tube length becomes a nonissue.

You need a little gap between the stem and the steerer tube because when you tighten the top cap you need a little space to preload the bearings. The stem cannot be flush to the steerer tube unless you make it flush then add a spacer above the stem like I do. Then you can have the full clamping surface of the stem and still be able to preload the headset bearings.

exactly! I'm just used to seeing a spacer used on top of the stem to make that gap rather than take away clamping surface. Thanks for commenting!

There is a 10mm spacer under the steering clamp. If you can find a shorter spacer it will get you in the ballpark.

DNM is a pretty good fork if you Revalve it and re spring to the correct rate.

Marzocchi Bomber 58, mine just came in. Gonna go nice with the Vonkat 10/5 in the rear.
    New in the box $1039.

The steer tube is supposed to sit under the stem.

Not sure what you mean. The SurRon uses a traditional clamp on steering stem which requires about 40mm of steer tube ABOVE the triple clamp to attach to. If you use a direct mount bolted directly to the upper triple clamp you don’t need that extra 40mm of tube

After watching @KMcFarty's video I realized there is another option. If you use a direct mount steering stem which are common with DH mountain bikes you can go down to a 7" steering tube length because you don't need the extra 2" for a steering stem! I've never owned a DH MTB so I didn't realize they had moved to a direct mount stem. Check out his awesome mod video here: czcams.com/video/IZiyC6iff2g/video.html

Good catch on that. Direct mount stem is the way to go. You can get an old 26” DH fork for it.

So now I’m curious, I can find Fox 36 and 38 all day long. Can’t quite find Fox 40 as easily.
      Wondering if this is possible.

was just about to say the same thing... steer tube length is not an issue when you switch to direct 31.8mm handlebar mounts, that mount on the upper assemble of the tree

There is a place that redoes DNM forks to make them much better. You send the fork legs to them and they completely redo them for about $350

@chargedcycleworks does DNM tunes and even has a custom made coil spring and valving to handle the weight of the SurRon.

Im having the worst time with my handlebar mount.. it twists way too easily.. I need to figure out a direct mount stem. Anyone know what type i need?

    • @BrianLampright913
      @BrianLampright913  Před 3 lety

Any DM stem that fits a 31.8 bar will work. Unfortunately we are sold out of those and probably won’t have more for a month or more. Many are buying FUNN off eBay

  • @officialmysteriousrider6327

That's definitely a bad excuse specially when they can heat the cases with a standard electric heat stripper gun & for the sur ron why don't you press the tube out of the bottom yoke do it that way

They ended up breaking my engine case on the Honda :-/ just got it back after many weeks! I might need to redo this video I also learned another trick, another person was using 6.25” stems by replacing the OEM headset and bearings with a different setup that changed the overall head tube length of the frame.
