    Yeah, good list. In Aus a learner ride must have a LAMs for at least 12 months before progressing. LAMs..."Learner Approved Motorcycles" Back in the day......just after the dinosaurs disappeared😁 I started on a Yamaha TY250 (Trials bike which hated any sign of water what so ever....at the sniff of water it would die), then a Dual Sport, Yamaha DT250. My first Road bike was a Honda CB500 Four. Certainly come a long way since then in learner bikes. Cheers

    You have a keen sense of what is real to most people. Like i have said in prior comments , the vibe and delivery of your message stands alone. A new rider myself, having taken the msf course in july , and purchasing my 1st ever bike, a 2019 kawasaki versys 650, your message is relevant. prior to msf training , i literally studied a few hundred hours of motorcycle safety both in written and video form. primarily on youtube. all of the safety and gear , riding technique etc i studied prepared me for what can and should happen, and it does. it could be argued that i should have started with a smaller bike. but after several months of reviews i selected and bought what i did. and i am enjoying myself as often as possible. keep going strong and be safe. I can't agree about the Ninjas here. The 300 is more or less perfect for many riders. I've been riding around the last few years on an 09 Ninja 250r. Having fuel injection and a slightly larger engine and I'd probably never bother owning anything larger. The 250 is enough to get you going 90mph on the freeway and I've taken it over Steven's Pass. The fuel mixture was set for sea level. But, it was able to get over the pass at about 60mph even at the top.
    The 300 though, with fuel injection and a slightly larger engine should have no problems with typical riding.
    I regularly ride my 250 with riders on larger bikes and I generally keep up just fine. It can be a bit of a challenge keeping up when we first hit the superslab, but on the highways that people generally want to ride, I can easily keep up with the larger bikes. The fact of the matter is that there's usually so much extra power that goes unused that a slower bike with a good rider and good geometry can easily keep up through the twisties.

    • @GasWorksISO
      @GasWorksISO  Před 4 lety

      The video is about small, lightweight, cheap and easy to learn on. Of course the 300 outshines the 250. It’s a much better bike, but costs twice as much on the used market.

    It's funny you post that video the very day I started riding the Tu250x I bought from my sister (got my licence last thursday, at 42). A bit different from the CBR 500s we mainly used in my 26 hours of mandatory driving class (16 in closed circuit, 10 on the road - including highway), but just as nimble (and quite frankly, I was a bit surprised the power that 250cc have). I just might keep it once I upgrade to something a bit more powerful, but i really enjoyed the ride today. Winter is coming soon here, so hoping to get a few weeks of riding before I need to put this baby bike to storage.

Actually, there is also 6 hours of theory in the training (physics of motorcycling, proper gear, recognizing potential dangerous situations, etc.). I wouldn't say it makes us better riders than elsewhere in the world, but I feel and I know the basics of driving a motorcyle well enough to not kill myself in the first week of riding. Two of the main risks of driving here are: 1) potholes and generally bad road conditions; 2) the fact the car drivers are not that used to see motorcycles since the riding season is pretty short (6 months at best).

    Many motorcycle vloggers recommend 300cc or even 600cc displacement bikes, which I, as noob motorcyclist find absurd. As if they almost forgot how they once started. sickser66, I love you. You know that but I have to disagree with you on the Honda Grom. In my opinion, a compensating feature of motorcycles is their ability to accelerate out of danger. I worry about a new rider not being able to react quick enough on anything smaller than 250ccs. In my mind, I think a more experienced rider can manage a smaller cc bike better than a brand new rider. Other than that, solid video. In my MSF we trained on a Honda Rebel. My first bike was the Ninja 250. A prettier version than you showed in the video. ;p

      Yep. Stated in the video that all those bikes, not just the Grom have shortcomings, especially their inability to get out of sketchy situations due to the low horsepower. Many people get in an accident the first minute, hour or day on a motorcycle. It only takes a few hours to get comfortable with the controls? Those are the hours you have to get through first! How many times have you seen a beginner run into to something the very first time they use first gear? Often. These days, whose parents had a manual transmission car? Many people have never faced a clutch before. You may have to move the motorcycle 10 feet before you can let out the clutch. So you will stall it or do your first wheelie the first time you use a clutch. Have some saintly friend push you around a large asphalt area in neutral with the engine off and practice using the rear brake, the front brake and both brakes. You will also have to steer and make U turns. This is much harder than you remember. Then practice pulling in the clutch, braking to a stop and hitting the kill switch. You may not use this once a year, but newbies may need it the first time they put the bike in gear. Finally you are ready to circle around in first gear. You know how to brake, turn, pull in the clutch and hit the kill switch. Now you can think about second gear and the rest of your motorcycling adventures.

      The Monkey would be the easiest to ride. I’d say if you’re planning on buying one of those three, with the intention of keeping it even after you get a bigger bike, the Monkey would be my choice. It stands the best chance of holding its value long term, and they’re really well built, beautiful machines. If you don’t plan on keeping one of those choices, I wouldn’t choose any of them. They’re all well above the “cheap” range. The CBR 500 is a solid bike for sure, and if you’re not looking to upgrade, that would be a good all around, capable bike.

      Gas Works thanks for the great advice. Yeah I'm not looking to ever upgrade, so a black CBR 500 seems like it would be the best all around bike, but the other two are so damn cool and unique. I go back and forth on the Super Cub, but the Monkey is just the bomb. I'm surprised you don't think the Super Cub will be collectible since it seems to be limited production and is almost an exact replica of the original.

      Depends on what you’re looking for. Cruiser? Naked? Sport?

      Honestly if I were to jump to the next best thing without going too crazy, I’d get the Ninja 650. The thing with sport bikes is they’re either “beginner” bikes, or all out insane fast race bikes that you can ride on the street. I don’t think there’s a middle ground, but the Ninja 650 is probably the closest thing to it.
