Planet Coaster College - Arrow Hyper Coaster Tutorial

  • The Arrow Hyper coaster was the first ever coaster type to break the barrier of 200 feet - with famous examples being Magnum XL 200, (Pepsi Max) Big One and Desperado. They feature no inversions, focusing instead on height, speed and airtime. In this video I'll show you how to build one yourself, and share some pointers about them.
    I forgot to share statistics, but I tested this layout, giving as a result 5.98 excitement versus 0.74 nausea - not too shabby actually, for a coaster built to be realistic but not necessarily good from an ingame standpoint.

    About Planet Coaster College: PCC is a series of video guides in which I cover many aspects of making realistic and creative parks in Planet Coaster. One of my goals with the series is to make a video explaining each of the coaster types avaliable and show you how to build them, but there will also be some videos about elements of theme parks and the game in general, such as buildings and scenery. Overall, the series is directed toward already seasoned players of the games, though I do sprinkle tips that may be useful for beginners too.

    Arrow coasters have 7 cars per train, use scaffolding supports and Hyper coasters are defined more by their drop over height as some hyper coasters only reach a height as low as 160 ft but have a 200+ ft drop. Magnum was my first Hyper, before that the tallest ride I had been on was Shivering Timbers at MIA. I became obsessed with roller coasters after the magic I experienced on arrows first Hyper.

    I define a "hypercoaster" as a tall, lift-driven coaster featuring relatively open train design and focused on airtime and height. A gigacoaster, on the other hand, is focused on speed above all. Hypercoasters can include inversions, but inversions should be used sparingly (think Flying Aces and Flash @ Lewa Adventure).

  • @mallenwho
    @mallenwho Před 7 lety

    So long story short, Arrow built their rides like Roller Coaster Tycoon 1.
    Interesting that the development of theme park games, mirrors the development of theme parks themselves. Most if not all of the coasters in the original RCT were Arrow rides, weren't they? Same with the water rides and some gentle rides. It wasn't until the expansions and RCT 2 that other newer rides were added. And now, the Arrow rides are categorically "older" "Simpler" rides, using "old school ride construction techniques".

  • @hardpunkkore9235
    @hardpunkkore9235 Před 7 lety

    I was always under the impression that a hyper coaster had to have a drop of at least 200+ feet. Meaning a coaster could be for example 210 feet tall but not be a hyper coaster because it's largest drop was only, 180 feet. Same thing with a giga coaster, the biggest drop has to be 300+ feet, not how tall the coaster ultimately is.
    But I guess, it's left to interpretation.
    Either way, keep up with the good work.

    Just to say a hyper coaster (Original definition not style) is a coaster that has a maximum height between 200 and 299 FT. Then 300 to 399 FT is a GIGA like Fury 325 and 400 to 499 FT is a Strata like TTD or Kingda Ka

    If the height of the drop > 200 ft
    An example is Apollo's Chariot. It's height is 170 ft, but it's drop is 210 feet into a ravine.

    Wait.. What Magnum XL coaster that opened before Magnum XL 200? The only coaster with a name like that is Magnum XL 200 which was the first hyper coaster still standing to be called a hyper. Now, some people might argue that Moonsalt Scramble which once operated at Nagashima Spa Land was the first hyper. But, Moonsalt Scramble was never actually classified as a hyper coaster, and it was demolished. Also hyper coasters are mainly focused on airtime and turns, not inversions. That’s why something like Valravn at Cedar Point is not considered a hyper coaster.

    Not to be a coaster snob, but Magnum XL-200 is the original hyper coaster, and always will be. It is still very popular, usually enthusing 1.5mill plus riders per year. The best concept of arrow coasters is their simple design. They rely heavily on gravity and less on mechanical movement. This allows them to operate and be extremely reliable even in today's computer operated world. Magnums capacity tents to hover around 1800pph which is very high, which is why the line seems small and give the false sense of it being unpopular. Still on of the best and an icon among coaster enthusiasts everywhere.
