    Actually, The Son of Beast's loop wasn't the problem and the loop wasn't brutal at all. In fact it was quite smooth. The problem and the reason why the loop was removed is because the engineering of the wooden structures was poorly done which caused an incident in 2006 where some of the wood split in one of the bowl sections and caused a train to stop. So the solution was to get lighter trains that did not stress the wood as much. Because of the lighter trains, the coaster was having problems completing the circuit so they had to remove the loop to fix this.
    So ironically, the loop had to be removed because everything else was poorly designed. But the loop itself was okay. Evenutally, the ride closed because it was an engineering disaster, not because wooden coasters shouldn't have loops.

    • @panacoaster
      @panacoaster Před 7 lety +12

      agreed I was just about to write this after hearing him saying the loop was brutal I'm like what I got livid lol he giving false information and they took down the loop because they made the trains lighter and slowed downed the train resulting in the train not being able to successfully go through the loop.

    • @nitpicker9406
      @nitpicker9406 Před 7 lety +7

      panacoaster Yep, it's a myth that I've been hearing a lot ever since the ride was closed. Living near the park, I had the opportunity to ride Son of Beast over 50 times and I can tell you the problem with that ride was never the loop. It was the incredibily shaky bowl sections especially the first one. The loop was the smoothest part of the ride.
      I think that myth is the reason why we haven't seen any looping wooden rollercoasters since, outside of the RMC's which don't have looping inversions and aren't traditional woodies. We may never see a traditional woodie looping coaster again I fear because the RMC's are so good and a park would rather just make one of those because it is perceived as safer by the public and no park wants their new ride to be compared to Son of Beast.

      @vancesmith342 Před 7 lety

      Nit Picker I glad you brought this up, I have ridden Son of a Beast and the loop was smooth as glass...now that first helix was quite brutal and made the ride not enjoyable, but that first drop was amazing!

    • @Silvarret
      @Silvarret  Před 7 lety +36

      Ah, thanks. Then I suppose it may also be a problem of public perception that 6/4-seater woodies can't invert. I still see many people being strangely worried that lapbars aren't a proper protection on inverting coasters, along with the awful Son of Beast history. Just the read the Wiki, looks like I've helped a stubborn legend of the brutal loop; sorry about that.

    • @vancesmith342
      @vancesmith342 Před 7 lety +2

      Silvarret. When Son of Beast opened, it had custom built trains, not PTC's (6/4 seaters). It's a misperception that coasters aren't safe with just lap bars...insurance companies and law makers made it an issue...in my opinion. Especially in sue happy USA, where I live. I love your work, keep up! I will add, I do not believe there has been a wooden coaster with PTC's that inverted.

      Many people can create really good Roller Coasters in "Planet Coaster" like Silvarret does, but that doesnt really mean that they will be able to design and lead a roller coaster project in real. Because there are a lot of more values to consider, when you are designing a roller coaster, than you are able to define and get while you are building one in "Planet Coaster". "Planet Coaster" seems indeed very complex when you are looking at it with a simplistic view, but in comparison to the requirements of the reality, it is very simple structured actually. Which doesnt mean that the game is bad. Its a really good game, but it doesnt reflect the process of designing a roller coaster in reality. Eventually only from the "appearance" perspective, but thats it.

    Son of Beast is probably the most painful coaster I've ever been on. I thought I was going to break my back the whole time. And that was after they removed the loop. Really happy that wooden coasters have come a long way, I used to hate them because they always hurt me, but the newer ones are very smooth and a whole lot of fun! El Toro at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jersey is my absolute favorite!

      Then you haven't been on the steel coaster at the New York New York in Vegas. An absolute travesty of coaster creation. Uncomfortable plastic seats, For a steel coaster the turns were horribly jagged and not smooth, and at the end of it my back and neck ached. Not to mention the sleazy asking price of like $6 USD, around $12 AUD. Worst coaster I had been on next to Ninja during my theme park tour of the US.

What I like most about your tutorial videos of different coasters is that you'll explain the common elements to expect from each coasters (in the case of wooden coasters: double ups & downs, etc) which are helpful for inexperienced builders like myself. Without these guidance I'll usually just lay the tracks around without a clue so please keep up with it :).

    Just had a watch through this series of videos. So glad you made it, not because I wanted to know how to make coasters, but just to see what's going through your head when you make yours.
    Very similarly to me, it's not merely about the height and the maximum speed and general stats, it's about the forces that the riders will actually feel, and also keeping up the illusion of speed throughout an entire layout. Very interesting, and I hope to see more of this planet coaster college series for more different types of coasters.

    Hey, perhaps some feedback on your comment how to make the end of the coasters look faster wile they'r basicly slow. You covered the tecnical side of it, But i'd like to add the theming aspect in order make it look faster. When the coaster moves slower down the track have the detail/theming closier to the track and avoid wide open spaces. combine this while wraping the tracks around itself (as you did). Also, (and thats another thing) many people place tons of theming around the area's where the coaster runs fast, In stead of that, the extra theming should be at the slower sections when the train does not exceed experience speeds. Thanks for sharing and putting time into this. Thumbs up.

    These trains are called PTC, because they are built by Philadelphia Toboggan Coasters. They offer two-bench and three bench (shown here). The lap bars shown here are the individual ratcheting kind, which are the more modern style. Some trains come with headrests, and some do not (no headrests is generally the more traditional look).
    Fun fact: PTC used to offer trains with a single-position lap bar (lovingly referred to as "Buzz Bars") but these are increasingly less common. One excellent example of buzz bars is the Phoenix at Knoebels, which allows for massive airtime throughout the entire back half of the ride. The individual ratcheting bar generally aren't as loose.
    Thanks for the videos, don't even have the game yet, but they're great to watch

    Honestly what I probably would have done myself, after that first big banked turn at the end of the skyline, is have a fast and low sidewinder section where the coaster basically just twists and turns in and out of itself and goes up and down at the same time. That's probably one of my favorite things that wooden coasters do, cuz it gives a sense of bombing down a hilly twisty mountain road at breakneck speed.

    Wonderful tutorial, thank you Silv! And it's a glorious looking classic wooden coaster. Do you think you might be able to talk a bit about block sections at some point? Whenever I try them I always seem to end up with a train stuck at the top of the lift hill or with the second train not leaving until the first one is back at the station. I can't seem to find the middle ground. do you have a strategy?

    • @nitpicker9406
      @nitpicker9406 Před 7 lety +1

      I haven't got a chance to play planet coaster but in rct3, the way around that was to tell the coaster to wait for a full load and set the min waiting time the coaster departed from the station higher so the coaster would sit in the station longer so by the time it reaches the top of the lift hill, the second coaster will reach the block section. This won't work until the ride is opened to the peeps, but it did work.

    • @Strazman
      @Strazman Před 7 lety +11

      Many coasters in real life have a mid-course-brake-run, which in and of itself is a block brake. This provides a "safety net" in the middle of the track for a train to stop if there's an issue near the station.
      The general rule of thumb is that you want at least one more set of block brakes than there are number of trains on your track. Keep in mind, that both the station and the chain lift act as a block brake. So just by starting your coaster and building a chain lift, you've already made two block sections. But that usually isn't enough to support two coasters. If your train stops at the top of the chain lift, it's most likely because you still have a train waiting in the station. The system looks at the "block" section ahead of the top of the chain lift and sees that the very next block (the train station) is not clear. Therefore, the train won't leave the top of the chain lift until the train from the station departs. And the station train won't depart until the chain lift is clear. See what's happening? Your coasters will be forever locked in an epic limbo of infinity and you'll make headlines for your guests having the longest time spent on a roller coaster.
      By putting in either a mid-course-brake run (made out of block brakes, not trim brakes), and/or having a final block brake section just before the station, you are splitting up these long expanses of track into smaller "block" sections. As long as the next "block" section is clear, your train will advance through it. Many coasters can support three or more trains, as long as they have enough block sections to support it.
      In addition, realistic coasters need to pass an E-test. What this means is that if a coaster does have to make an emergency stop at any block brake, once released, a combination of the block brake speed and gravity can get the train all the way back to the station. This is why many mid-course-brake-runs are at an elevated height, so as to allow gravity (in the event of a complete E-stop) to still get the coaster home.
      Sorry for the long post, but I hope this helps.

    Here is another tip for making smoother hills. Delete them and auto-complete. Go to the top of the hill, and to the bottom of the hill and delete that part. Then auto-complete, it's quicker there is no smoothing button involved, and it always works great for me. If it is a lift hill, start where the chain stops and end at the very bottom of the hill, delete and auto-complete.
    I try not to use the smooth tools whatsoever, but I do on every coaster in certain spots. I think when they are too smooth they lose realism.
    I did read the comment from Nit Picker saying the coaster you were talking about wasn't brutal. There is a tip to brutal coasters as well. The Mean Streak at Cedar Point was a very brutal coaster, until I learned how to ride it. If you press your knees into the lap bar, most of brutal of that track goes away. And, it becomes a decent ride, though it is no longer there.
    When you ride an Arrow coaster, you do the same kind of thing. You push yourself up into the harness, and you won't shake around too much and they become a lot more fun.
    Stand up coasters, if you find them brutal there is one trick everyone knows, bend your knees a little when sizing the seat, but that doesn't do much. The trick to riding a stand up coaster, is pressing yourself into the harness by standing on your tippy toes. And almost all the brutal from that goes away.
    The trick is to be secure, so if you press yourself into the harness, your body will stay in place instead of shaking all around, and hurting when you are done.
    That is my tip from a guy riding rollercoasters for over 40 years.

    LOVE the video, but quick note on Son of Beast. The loop wasn't taken out because it was rough or anything, it was a previous part of the track where there was some kind of problem with the wood and people were getting back issues. To combat this they acquired lighter trains, and the new trains couldn't make it through the loop at the speed they wanted to they removed it.

    I believe the theme for the wooden coasters in this game is based off of the company that built the cars and trains for The Beast. I could be wrong, but considering that the game has the train design called "monster" and the fact the design reminds me of the trains on The Beast, I think they are referring to that ride in particular. But great tutorial!

    Thank you and Phew my wooden coaster follows all these principles and I was going off of a memory many, many years ago. However I didn't know about the block brakes and being able to add second train, I have a slight incline going into my station so I only have 1 trim near the end, I may have to alter that, which is fortunate as it's the easiest section to alter cosmetic wise.
    It might also be useful to note that the amount of cars in the train seriously affects whether it will make the full distance and ride quality and something worth adding to your otherwise excellent guide.

    • @Silvarret
      @Silvarret  Před 7 lety

      Thank you! Good point, I'll take that for some future tutorials. Car count should be a thing anyway for these tutorials - most coasters have their usual car count set in stone, it's very awkward to see people make e.g. floorless coasters with 3 cars a train.

  • @thegreatskinkpriest8104

    Currently the worlds largest double-down is on the Boss at six flags St. Louis. The first drop has a smaller but steeper drop that dives under the mid course break run. It sucks that so many people hate this ride because it is a little rough. It is currently the largest CCI and the ranked 17 best wooden coaster to ever stand. In case if your wondering, CCI created roller coasters such as Balderdash, Shivering Timbers, and Raven. Yet people still hate this masterpiece.

    Great tutorial, wooden coasters can be one of the more challenging coasters to create in game when it comes to making them feel real. I personally always just tell myself that all my wooden coasters are of the Intiman varriey and will age well. And to be fair considering the max drop angle of the in game woodies, that is a fair assumption.
