Saw Gummo in theater when it came out.
It affected me deeply.
It was so depressing, but it never felt like Korine was mocking or condescending the characters.
It was just brutal, unflinching honesty.
Ultimately it was a staggering human tragedy.
Excellent insight into Gummo. You guys get it. It was a lonely gig back in the '90s trying to defend this film when it came out. Even critics I respected completely flatlined with bad takes. I avoided it for awhile based on that and then saw it and was really blown away and moved by it. Nice talk, fellas.
Two things I never expected to see today:
1.) Kino corner reviewing an sfm thing
2.) Emp not being green.
Kino Corner couldn't figure out how to make Emp green for the vid. As per statements made during Simian Jimmy's Treehouse podcast.
Watching this reminded me that people with different perspectives can have a civil dialogue about a movie. It's like the _BEFORE TIMES_
My favorite film of all time, there is a strange beauty to it (that y'all touch on) that so many miss, it isn't pure nihilism, it's... life, just honest life.
I honestly find it so beautiful the closeness between the charecters .The love between the sisters ,the mother hand washing her sons hair and the respectful and kind way the father and son talk about his passed mother .I think it shows genuine true connection that you cant find with wealthy "acceptable" families and friends.
Gummo is such a great movie. Some people escape their social environment, most won't, feels bittersweet
Why isn't emp green wtf
I told him no
The footage is presented in color to preserve the directors original vision.
Clearly emp just has a filter so he dosent looks green
Offcource emp understand the style of The Kino córner
@@TheKinoCorner shame on you
Oh man.. The villain throw..
Every movie has that!.. I've heard anyone talk about that before.
Those 80's hair metal band t shirts worn through out the film is the chef's kiss
one of my all time favorites. harmony korine is amazing
Does EmperorLemon have jaundice in this video? He's not looking as green as usual.
My film professor back in college worked on this film. He said it was an absolute nightmare lol
My feelings on Gummo are so mixed. All the criticisms are basically right; it's Harmony Korine--an ironic rich kid--making mean spirited misery porn about poverty. It's not "real" or "honest," because it's too cartoonish in its negativity to be honest. (Chinese restaurants don't actually sell cat meat in America. That's just not something that actually happens. etc.) But from an audio-visual standpoint, it's an incredibly well made and evocative film. And a lot of the acting is so natural.
shout out to MDE and Gummo being mentioned in the same video! I've hung out with Harmony and Sam Hyde, but sadly, not at the same time.
I've also directed "the cross dresser kid" (Daniel Martin) and "the black small person" (Bryant Crenshaw). Great talk man!
Imagine being 16...imagine rentng Gummo on VHS... now imagine being so enthrolled you need to see this filmaker complete oeuvre... Imagine renting Kids.... Man...hype aside, I blame Larry Clark for that shi....
This movie rocks honestly
I thought I was watching FISHTANK for a moment
This movie is just what happens in Every small town in Mississippi
North Florida, too.
@@TheKinoCorner Florida and Ohio are very similar in terms of strangeness to anyone not from either
Or, any small town anywhere...
If you are from rural Ohio or Florida this movie probably won't seem that strange. I love this movie
The only reason I knew this film existed was because the band Electric Hellfire Club has a rockin' track called "D.W.S.O.B." that apparently is only on the film's soundtrack, none of their own albums.
Please do more videos talking about alternative films
I'm taking notes
Chloe was Harmony's girlfriend at the time. He had made bunch of connections because he wrote Kids, the Larry Clark movie about two years prior
Hell yea it's another one of these! I liked the talk with solar sands and I'm sure I'll enjoy this one
I remember you saying that you want to take a break from youtube at some point to focus on screenplays and other IRL stuff, to which I say good luck!

Oh boy does this remind me of my hometown. It's normal for so many people but sad from the outside. Glad I'm not there anymore.
The perfect video
Great discussion!
Wait, EmperorLemon doesn't have yellow skin?!? And for the longest time, I thought he was an Asian....😞
Certified kino
Wow EmpLemon looks better than I thought he would.
It's funny because the real life Xenia is a fairly upscale suburb/exurb.
The characters of Gummo are basically the untouchables of America. People who are lost in these dead rural towns, with no resources and no prospects. Harmony is great at artistically capturing these people on the fringes, humanizing them, and finding something beautiful where most might see something grotesque.
Also, it's funny to think of Korine as "woke", since he's such a big fan of Al Jolson.😂 We've all got problematic favs i guess.
Tf? Why is he yellow instead of green?
wonderful
Obama loves me, this I know. For the affordable healthcare act tells me so.
🤡
Saw this not too long after it came out. It's pretty straight forward on the themes it's trying to portray - a little in the nose, but does a much better job than most films of demonstrating what white trash/poverty looks like. Difficult to do, and not exactly a joy to watch.
Trash? Yikes man
@@arareanddifferenttune3130 I'm not interested in coddling the Jerry Springer corner of my demo
Two Gods
I contend that the kissing in the rain, in the pool was Bunny Boy's reward for finding Foot Foot's corpse. It's a happy end of sorts. In spite of the transactional nature, this scene is in sharp contrast with the (false) transactional undertones in the scene where the dirty old man lures the girls into his car to find Foot Foot but not really. I'm not sure if it's consent, the result (of actually finding her) or the smaller and the reverse age gap that makes one transaction seem wholesome and the other vile but it's there, and like you said, Foot Foot ties all three story lines together.
If this was a sub-genre (let's call it Intimate Squalor) I could point to one other movie that would fit in it: Ugly, Dirty And Bad (1976) by Ettore Scola, a brilliant Italian movie.
4 minutes in, I didn't watch the movie, pretty interesting! Not sure if I should continue watching or they are going to reveal too much tho
Why isn’t he GREEN!?
cool video on a movie I've never heard of.
Emplemon my boi cool. And Gummo... uhmm also cool. Sorta.

Was this filmed in a lunch room?
Why isn't he green?
One of the worst movies i have seen, reeks of hehe we had some money, let's blow it all on drugs and make a Le nihilist edgy french avant garde movie with the 10K we have left.
You're wrong. Its a great movie
Monkey paw: collab with EmpLemon, but it's about a shitty movie.
Its a great movie

Once again you review a film without understanding or recognizing the clear themes of sexual liberation and lgbtq pride. Do better...
