Highlander (1986) - 'Training Montage' scene [1080p]

- Despite some mediocre acting from Lambert, this film managed to become a reasonable hit thanks to its mix of fantasy and modern-day crime, with help from the likes of Sean Connery, and some stunning scenery set to the music of Queen and Michael Kamen. This montage is a perfect showcase for Michael Kamen's sweeping main theme.
Starring Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery and Clancy Brown. Directed by Russell Mulcahy. Original songs by Queen, original score by Michael Kamen. - Krátké a kreslené filmy

Pretty sound advice for fighting.

Same to us even we're not immortals.
Maybe that’s why Heather never told him.
I forgot. Why was he helping him instead of taking his head?

Many Immortals are actually rather chill. Some are even compassionate.
Ramirez saw a lost greenhorn who needed help and guidance, so he stepped up.
McCleod and Kastagir supposedly were close friends for centuries.
Not everybody is a flaming psycho like the Kurgan.
I love it, a Scottish Spanish teaching swordsmanship to a french Scottish
Except Connery,s character is Egyptian, only formerly employed in Spain
With a Japanese sword.
An Egyptian with a Spanish name with a Scottish accent who fights with a Japanese sword
@@jasonleedham5678 What is clear is that the character of Sean Connery is not British, everyone knows that these people did not know how to fight with the sword, theirs are the bows. Come greetings of máximo decimo meridio and Iñigo Montoya
Would you have it any other way?
Apparently Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery got along very well and became close friends during the making of the film. I think a lot of that carried over to Connor and Ramirez's onscreen friendship and made it feel even more genuine.
That's good to know. I just revisited this film and realized what a gem it is. Love the Boston Common bit.

True legend
Scotland is still part of the UK. However, the Union Jack is for Sean Connery the actor: portraying James Bond and his many great films - and for his services in the Royal Navy during World War Two. The Scottish flag 🏴 (here) is for Sean Connery the man: and to Scotland where he was born and where his political alliances and his heart will now forever lay.

Don’t care what anyone says, this is a really entertaining movie. I still think it’s underrated, it gets better with time too.
The first one is a masterpiece but the other films were trash.
And that's why i'm writing ONE VISION

It’s underrated because it’s a bit cheesy at times.
@@knightwarrioranimations9656 It is a product of its time. The UK version is better than the USA release. The American cut is missing key scenes that make the plot choppy and the motivations feel off.
Beautiful landscapes and music. They don’t make epics like this anymore.

So I'm not the only one here because of the sad news

Serious movie, feel good moment. Where are these in movies now? The sheer joy they express in channeling a stag and simply running.
Does Sir Sean Connery express that much joy in ANY other role? It's like, a respected actor just letting himself go for once.
Epic movie. They don't make masterpieces like this now.
Well they're making a remake but it's probably gonna be shit, and even if it isn't you still can't beat the original.

"Now, PENDEJO, shall we see what sort of swordsman you've become?"
Thanks for catching that
::Proceeds to smash the blades of two perfectly good swords together in training just like every other time::
Spaniards don't use the word pendejo, that's a Mexican word. It wouldn't make any sense for Ramirez to say something like that lol
@@SargentoJohnson As a insult, it was originally used in 16th century Spain for a teen who thought of himself as a man.
@@thomasgrice8864 really? I never heard about it. Do you have any more information?
As strange as Lambert's accent is, the way it's explained in the film makes it actually brilliant. 👏
"You talk funny Nash, where you from?"
👉 Lots of different places. 👈
True. And times too.
Yes he's been alive for hundreds of years, moving around different parts of the world, so he would pick up all kinds of accents. The only thing is his lame scots accent when he hasn't moved from Scotland.
@@bimbobaggypants4820 You have to remember that Christopher Lambert is French and English is his second language so knowing that I think he did a really good job with his Scottish accent. I also really like the accent he uses in the all the present day scenes in the movie. The way they explain that in the film is also very clever. Now as great as Sean Connery is, he was the one that didn’t do well with his accents. Connery’s Ramirez is supposed to be an Egyptian who gradually made his way through the different cradles of civilization starting from Egypt, Mesopotamia, Samaria, Babylon, Greece, Eastern Europe, Western Europe, and now Spain. For a guy who’s lived in all those places and who currently came from Spain, you’d think he would at least try to do a Spanish accent not his actual Scottish accent.
@@archangel5627 and how he had only a month and a half to learn English before filming started so I don't think the accent was there biggest concern honestly
What's even more fascinating (for me, at least, since I love historical linguistics) is that he would have witnessed languages changing over time. Perhaps he would have known dozens of languages and their older shapes.
@@archangel5627you want to see "not even trying to hide the accent" watch The Hunt for Red October. Connery plays a Russian submarine commander 😂😂😂
I've always loved this training scene: the breathtaking scenery, the camera work, the enthusiasm of the two characters, the musical score by Michael Kamen,... Honestly, this is one of the best overall movies made. Single greatest soundtrack in cinema.
From Don't Lose Your Head to Princes Of The Universe to Who Wants To Live Forever, the whole A Kind Of Magic album proves that both Freddie himself and Queen as a group were musicians by which all others should be judged.
1:08 - The moment this cheap B movie gains "Epic" status.
Love the music!
Highlanders budget was 19 million in 1986. worth about 45 million in todays time. Not really cheap B movie...
@@NewFriiiikan £45M is a shoestring budget by today's standards
It never was a B-movie. It made a huge bang on France when it came out. And still acclaimed worldwide as a masterpiece.
4:28 this moment was framed perfectly. Ramirez wondering whether or not Connor would betray him and take his head. If he had become suddenly power-hungry, after everything, he has learned about being an immortal. It also left the audience wondering in that instance.

One of my first great movies. Sean Connery and Christopher Lambert are glorious.
Highlander was so well written, directed with beautiful transitions and extraordinary acting. Having Sean Connery (Ramirez) supporting the lead character that Christopher Lamdin played (Conner Mccloud) really brought out the chemistry between the two actors. This film was one of my all time favorites. Highlander was tremendous and Epic !!

A Scots actor that play a not-Scots character in a movie placed in Scotland, with a French actor that play a Scots character. Incredible!
I literally watched this two weeks ago and two weeks later, Sir Sean is no longer with us. Here's to a man among men.
To train in the most Beautiful place on earth priceless
Christopher Lambert played it perfectly. Wonderful film, timeless. They don’t make them like they used too. Unless we all want to pull out our First Class Acting Degrees I don’t think it would be appropriate to comment on his acting abilities. If this film was made in the modern day it would be all action, no story telling, no character building, just explosions, knife fights and whatever else gets the studio a quick profit. You just can’t compare.
Imagine if Lucas film made this movie. LMAO
It's still a terrible movie with cringe-worthy acting, but it's cheesy and fun (rewatched again last night). But the worst 'fight' scenes ever, i mean bloody hell folks, it's not like Hollywood hadn't already shown some good sword fights in the past (Erroll)
Just because people don't have 'first class acting degrees' doesn't mean they can't recognize and comment on bad acting. You go right from that to complaining about how modern films are made without an ounce of hypocrisy. Maybe you should pull out your First Class Modern Directing Degree? It's also worth remembering that Highlander was a box office failure. There are quite a few modern films that don't enjoy box office success that are fantastic and tick all those boxes. Comparing it to Transformers is a bit unfair based on just how this movie was marketed, the cinematic trends, and a few other factors. Studios and directors are still out there making great movies; they just don't play well in China.
Lambert's acting is horrible in this film and most of the ones he's in, actually. The film doesn't hinge on it, though, and while he is the main character, there's enough supporting cast and focus on other aspects that, unlike the second film, his acting ability, or lack thereof, doesn't take away from anything. Yet, for a movie that lacks a convincing leading acting and any really good action sequences, it is done in a way that is just fun and enjoyable. It doesn't have kind of pretentious nonsense that some films come attached with, nor does it treat its audience as stupid. It knows we're all watching something that is inherently goofy yet does what it can to make it connect in the right places. On a scale of 1 to The Rocketeer, I give it a solid 7.
Say what you like about Highlander. It’s still a timeless classic that is 100 times better than the bland, unimaginative tripe Hollywood churns out today.
I agree, Christopher Lambert was fantastic. He was especially on point during the modern sections of the film, portraying Connor as a very world weary and tormented man who doesn't quite seem to belong anywhere. His accent is a bit wonky at times but I still can't imagine anyone else playing this role as well as he did.
It's hard to believe but Christopher Lambert is virtually blind without his glasses, so he's basically acting all his scenes without being able to see what he's doing. At 0:17 when he turns around, that look of tension in his face and his eyes being slightly red is REAL!
Hats off to Sean Connery. He always brought a movie he starred in to a new level. His preparation and acting was impeccable and larger than life !! RIP Sean Connery the legend
So many charming elements to this montage. One thing I truly appreciate about it is Heather.
Even after learning what Connor is and is capable of, she still stood by his side till the day she died; she was still happy and had a good life with Connor, with the exception of not having children of her own, growing old with Connor and being raped by the Kurgan.
I love this movie.
Word on the street is,she really did yurn for kurgens return... lol my bad
37 years old still love this movie but its the music that gets you addicted micheal kamen ..like many films soundtrack is very important
Soundtrack and photography are perfect!
I just love this piece of music, combined with Sean's narrative, prose-like style - its a kind of magic (sorry, couldn't help it!) :p
😊
Sean Connery is The Man.
I remembered this movie I watched years ago with my father and two years after he passed I’m happy I got to watch something that made me feel like he was here again
Gotta say, the scenery is just beautiful!
I thought it was partly the Isle Of Skye and the Western Isles (eg the beach scene above), and possibly down in Wales for higher mountain scenes. I may be wrong with the mountains - wiki and other sites say mainly Eilean Donan Castle, Glencoe, Glen Nevis, Loch Shiel, Torridon and Skye. The battle between the warring Scots tribes was Glencoe in Argylleshire (though the shot of the Kurgan on horseback was filmed later in Wales). Glencoe also in Mel Gibson’s Braveheart and Skyfall.
@@MrVidification All the mountain scenes look awfully like West of Scotland.
Yup...lived there and it was def west of highland scotland....miss it ❤
The scene at 3.24 is on the Cioch on Skye (2 stuntmen of course-look closely)
It's skye and glencoe and beaches north of Scotland
Dopest soundtrack....and possibly the last time the galaxy has seen Sean Connery run ever again.
"This is the quickening" Russell Mulcahy, a masterpiece for the ages 😊
I suddenly felt like rewatching this movie upon learning the news. Rip Sean.
I love this track from the soundtrack, its like a father son relationship in this scene in the film, Ramirez teaching MacLeod.
Chills no matter how many times I see this part
I agree
Just shows you how a good score lifts an entire film.
I do greatly enjoy that while Highlander is honestly quite silly with some level of awareness as it revels in its silliness, it also has a lot of genuine passion behind it.
The training isn't merely just to turn Connor into a better fighter. The experience allowed him to become more open and mindful beyond just his home in the Scottish Highlands, now that he no longer has a natural lifespan. Sure, immortality has downsides but Ramirez showed how enriching one can be with such an ability. Connor not only gain long friendships, but he became a wealthy cultured badass who despite his dourness is still a very loving dude. And it makes his win of gaining both ultimate power and the chance to truly live again as a mortal very satisfying.
Again silly as hell but there's a big heart in this movie.
"Now, pendejo. Shall we see what sort of swordsman you've become?"
Ja ja pensé que sólo yo había escuchado esa palabra. Creí que sólo era coincidencia que las palabras en inglés sonaran igual al español

I think you are being harsh calling Lambert’s acting ‘mediocre’. He conveys a complex character in an authentic and understated way, and I found him completely believable. For example, just look at the stag scene in this clip - his reaction is just wonderful and great acting IMO.
Agreed. Lambert did a ton of great acting with just non-verbals and facial expressions. The confrontation scene in the church is a prime example. In the entirety of that scene, you can feel MacLeod's anger and hatred towards Kurgan. And it starts with Connor staring dead into space as he feels Kurgan's evil presence hovering behind him and then standing over him, showing that the immortals can sense each other's presence. All during that scene, Connor is verbally going toe to toe with Kurgan and in control of his emotions, then when he realizes what Kurgan did to Heather, his reaction spoke volumes. In the scenes with Brenda, he's more cheeky and playful because he knows she's not a threat and he's also attracted to her. And he's distinctly inexperienced and naive in the 1700s scenes versus completely confident and in control in the 1980s scenes. One of the most underrated lead performances ever.
Christopher Lamert also learned how to speak English for the role, that's dedication to one's craft.

One of my favorite movies. Definitely a cult classic that gets better with each passing year. I wish the deleted footage had not been lost. It would have been awesome to see a restored-Extended Cut of the film. I heard a rumor that there was even a lost sword fight between the Kurgan and another immortal that ended with him giving up his head to the Kurgan. All that survived from the scenes were production stills.
I always felt Highlander was a film that needed a modern remake, with the utmost "Respect" to the original source material and faithful to what made it a classic in cinema history. Im saying dont have Batista (Sorry to all the Batista fans out there) playing the Kurgan and that guy from 50 Shades play Connor MaCleod.
