  • Hello Low Buy Family!
    I decided to vlog my August Check-in to let you know how I've done on my Low Buy this month in terms of shopping, spending, and how I did with my student loan repayment plan this month. I'm also sharing kind of a "Day in my life" because things like focusing on fitness are tools that I now use often to avoid shopping and overspending.
    Moving into September, I'm challenging myself to another NO BUY, aptly named "NO SPEND SEPTEMBER" to see how much more I can lay down on my student loan into this new month.

      I’m thinking about September being a low buy month for me personally. In August I hardly spent money and only treated myself on my birthday estimated. $40 for 1drink and dinner with close friends. It’s great you applied $5300 to your student loans. I owe $76k in loans. It has been a hard long road. However, having the extra money to pay the principal balance helps a lot!! I can relate how it can boost your happiness. I’m able to add extra this September . So I’ll buy the basics (essentials/ food water, shelter etc), finish my side table and save the rest! Thank you for uploading this video and being transparent. It’s encourage me to going and be kinder to myself (especially self talk)

      I‘m in - I spent lots of money on a new laptop last month because the one I wanted for a year had a huge discount. Stillt it cost me alot of money. I‘m doing my wardrobe switchover this weekend - seeing all the clothes I haven‘t seen in months should be exciting enough to keep me away from shopping. Plus I‘m going on holidays by the end of the month so that‘s where I want to spend my money. And I think a big thing is going to happen soon and we are actually buying a house. Which is a huge financial responsibility which I‘m really quite scared off being honest.

    I've never understood why people feel ashamed of student loan debt. I got a full tuition scholarship to my dream college and borrowed money for books and housing. My parents didn't have the money to send me to college, and I ended up taking out about $24000. It has always felt like money well spent- like an investment in myself that I don't think I can ever regret. Maybe I can say that because my degree did open doors and felt like an opportunity for me to get out of a poor background. I deferred my student loans when I went to grad school, and although I no longer have any grad school debt I still have about $4000 from my undergrad loan. It will get paid off eventually... but the fact that I borrowed money because I wanted better for myself and wanted to make opportunities for myself isn't something I'm embarrassed about. Good luck on your low buy month!

    • @Christinamychas
      @Christinamychas  Před 5 lety +12

      It was definitely an investment in myself, but I feel shame because I basically ignored it and decided to feed my shopping habits over these years instead of focusing on paying the debt off and prioritizing becoming financially free for about 3 going on years now. That's where my embarrassment comes from in this now if that makes sense. I'm grateful for pharmacy school and wasn't really able to cashflow that schooling, hence the student debt. It's how I approached paying it off after I started my career that bothers me now, and that's what I'm trying to change. No shame to anyone who has to take out a student loan whatsoever!

    Congratulations on having that much money to pay off loans. We currently are working on budgeting better. I think the hardest thing is feeling like you are getting somewhere, and then something random comes up that takes money away from what was saved.

    I think it is so important that you're talking about this so publicly!!! So many of us have unrealistic expectations about paying debt and budgeting and it is really helpful to see your journey. You are motivating me to spend less and save more!

    I've been trying to not buy things that aren't necessary but I have definitely been having a hard time. It's so difficult for me to not put money towards things I truly enjoy eventhough I know I don't need then! But I'm determined to be debt free by next year so I am actively working on eliminating habits that enable my slight shopping addiction. Your low buy videos are wonderful and definitely help me keep things in perspective ❤

    I really enjoy your videos. It’s so healthy to talk about overshopping and finances. I’m further along my no-shopping journey, and it still feels strange to go out and buy things because I need them. And I often feel like I could easily slip back into my old habits. It’s a process. I’m glad you stopped using the phrase “failure”, when overall you are clearly succeeding. Well done on tackling that loan!

    I loved the keep your head down and do the work vibe of this video. You are paying off debt because you are doing the work - not because of a windfall. You got this - keep it up. I'm in the same boat. Work, gym, no going out, no buying new clothes and minding my own business. September = more work and progress

    That's really great that you were able to put that much towards your student loan! I'm on for a No Spend September. I'm working on repaying my emergency fund after having an emergency and I'm still trying to fully fund my retirement funds this year. It's going to be tight, but I think if I can cut a few things I'll make it with some room to spare.

    Great job being kinder to yourself and getting rid of negative self-talk! ❤️ Your advice about recognizing this is a process really helped me in Aug-I cut way back on eating out, didn’t buy any unneeded clothes, put some $ in savings and even purchased a dress for a wedding at a very well-planned low dollar amount. Overall a big success and I’m finding I’m much more thoughtful about spending after only a few weeks.

    I’m trying to establish good goals for myself for my low buy. The issue I’m having is that I’m working towards going low waste, and find myself needing supplies towards that. Like running out of shampoo and wanting to invest in a shampoo bar and tin. Investing in a safety razor ($18+blades but will last me forever vs. plastic razors). I love your videos and get so much inspiration from them! I have such a spending issue and it really stems from my own self worth as well. You make me think deeper! Thank you!

    • @Christinamychas
      @Christinamychas  Před 5 lety +1

      Triss P that’s awesome! Yes I agree low waste items are an investment but long term. I think buy and replace items slowly as you need them bc I’ve been tempted to overhaul my stuff for the sake of being greener or more sustainable (at the expense of getting rid of stuff I can still use but is not as eco friendly), and then I still overspend and may not necessarily need or use the items if that makes sense! The razors are a great buy tho! Xo thank you so much for your lovely comment. I’m glad something resonates ❤️

  • @respondstonancy

    What you said at around the 10:30 mark really resonated with me. I feel that I've also used my student loans as an excuse for not achieving as much as I "should" especially because my particular skill is film production design which is not very stable. But instead of aggressively paying off my loans i'll spend frivolously not even on large things like luxury or long lasting items/experiences just little things. August was a really bad month and a small $200 emergency expense left me almost bare with no savings it was a big wake up call and I'm hoping September is a much better month and I wish you nothing but the best on taming your shopping addiction and debt repayment thank you for sharing and making me feel less alone!

However, it’s been 9 yrs since I graduated. I’ve been able to finally now put extra this year in my debt. Knock it down, stay on a very tight budget.
