      She's also kind of stuck with the system. It's easy for us, after the challenge, to look at the reply and say "that was an ace", but she can't do that and that's not her fault. So she really does have to go with what she remembers.

    • @user-rf9mx4qf7z
      @user-rf9mx4qf7z Před rokem +3

      @@berimboplata Oh, no doubt it's a mistake, and a bad one. I'm not defending that. The point though is that, if that's what she remembers, she's stuck with it. She can't "admit to her mistake" and change the call just because Elena said so. The simple solution would be if she could just watch the replay and check herself, and in that case no doubt she'd have changed it, but she's not allowed to do that.
      Incidentally, with the number of points umpires watch from the chair, mistakes are bound to happen sometimes. It's easy to forget that when you're just watching on TV without any pressure to make the right call *every single time*. The question should be, how often does she make mistakes like this? If it's every other match, that's a problem. If it's once in her career, it probably isn't.

      There are consequences for umpire errors in that it affects their individual rating. The higher an umpire’s rating, the greater priority given to him/her for the bigger, more prestigious matches. Tournaments such as Wimbledon also have the authority to ban certain umpires if the committee decides that the umpire is not sufficiently reliable, or has committed an egregious error in a past tournament.

This is why technology must be introduced, to prevent officials from making such simple mistakes. It is ridiculous that a professional sport, with millions of dollars in prizemoney, cannot use a replay. Sure, it's a bit complicated but I Will try lol
      When the line judge screams "Out" and than its overturned (by the ref or the challenge), there is two options in this scenario:
      1st: Replay the point because the line judge stopped the point
      2nd: If the ref considers the last ball was a winner and the line judge call didn't impact Rybakina's return (which was out), she can must give the point to the Wang
      In here, the ref was a bit confused because sequence was: the line judge called out - the ref overturned calling it in - Rybakinas challenged
      Ref mistakenly thought for a moment Rybakina stopped the play to challenge, so she was responsible for the stoppage (than, the point should be given to Wang). When she was reminded of all the fuss (and it was the line judge who stopped the point, not Rybakina) she admitted she was mistaken and ordered replay the point.
      Sometimes the refs won't admit they don't remember the play so they just go like "it's my decision, so let's just move on"

    One more reason why I'm always rooting for Rybakina. She fights for every point and when needed like in this video, stands her ground as a matter of principle without resorting to drama or tantrums. Beauty, grace, great communicator (like Nadal, her accent makes speech even more adorable!) plus all-around skills. Btw, the Umpire should be penalized for gross incompetence.

  • @jonathanchen1026
    @jonathanchen1026 Před rokem +27

    The line judge interrupted the point, Elena didn’t stop the point to challenge. So after the line judge interrupted the point, the umpire corrects the call and then Elena challenges the correction. The challenge failed, so the point should be replayed because it was interrupted by the incorrect out call by line judge. If the ball was shown out by challenge, it would actually be Elena’s point. So the umpire was actually wrong in saying that regardless of the outcome of challenge it would be replay.

    • @fredthechamp3475
      @fredthechamp3475 Před rokem +1

      This seems to be a very common misconception. In tennis you cannot have 2 chances of winning the point. You cannot say "I will challenge this ball. If it's out I win the point. If it's in we replay the point. It's a win-win situation for me." You cannot have it both ways. Either you take the chance and challenge, or you replay the point.

    • @jonathanchen1026
      @jonathanchen1026 Před rokem +8

      @@fredthechamp3475 if the ball was out, the point is won by Elena because her opponent hits it out. If the ball was in, the point is replayed because the rally would have continued with Elena already there hitting the ball. The line judge calls the ball out, umpire corrects and calls it in. Elena then challenges that correction of it being called in. It would have been different if she had been the one to stop the point and challenged the ball being in/out. If she stops the point and challenges and the ball was in, she loses the point because she stopped the point. If ball was out, she wins the point. So you see, it’s different situation based on what interrupted the point.

      Rybakina would not have missed the shot if they didn’t call it out.
      Likewise you don’t win the point just because it hit the line and the point was stopped. You have to hit a winner before the call to get the point(like Rybakina’s ace against Sabalenka that they stole from her)
      If the judge stops the point because they thought it was out and you miss the shot or don’t keep playing when it was actually in then it is their fault for being wrong and the point is restarted. If the other player hits it out and the judge says it was in but you challenge the call and it ends up being out then the other player wasn’t affected by the call and they lose the point.
