    Despite being small it did actually have an overnight sleeping train from Copenhagen to Arhaus and as I recall it used British Rail stock on it's sleepers.I wonder if other small countries like; Belgium, Switzerland and the Netherlands have ever had any internal sleepers not crossing any national border?

    • @Simon-Andersen
      @Simon-Andersen  Před rokem +13

      I dont know about the other countries but yes, there used to be a proper night train from Frederikshavn via Aalborg and Aarhus to Copenhagen, it was eliminated around the opening of the great belt bridge as that cut journey times down to around 6 hours.

      Belgian here, we don't have any. I mean the longest train ride you could possibly achieve here is probably around 4 hours (and this is probably to the most remote stations we have). Between major cities I don't think you are ever going to be on a train longer than 3 hours. We have one of the highest railway densities so any travel by train is relatively short. If they run on time that is.

    Reminds me of my first visit to Denmark in 1997. We took the overnight train from Kobenhavn H to Hobro. Back then it was loco hauled, so we had a Litra ME to Korsor, whilst a Litra MT pushed us onto the train ferry. Then a Litra MZ took us to Arhus, for a second Litra MZ north. Four different locos, on a four coach train (one sleeping car and three couchette coaches). We were in one of the couchette coaches so I could get up and record the loco numbers. Luckily DSB paints the number also on the front of the loco, so I did not need to alight. The DSB guard thought I was maybe a thief because I was walking through the coaches at night, and the locos appeared at opposite ends of the train. He had trouble understanding why anyone would stay awake all night, but it is essential for a loco basher like me. So I explained I was just a mad Englishman, and he was happy with that explaination !!
    Best regards from London England.

Whenever I need to come back/go to Madrid or Barcelona before 8 or after 21 I have to take a 4h bus instead of a more comfortable train (and faster 1:30h train), the price is not that low either, I’ve bought first class train tickets for the same price

    We used to have a similar service in Belgium, the last IC from Ostend to Welkenraedt, you could board the train after 22:30 in Ostend, or in Brussels shortly after midnight, you'd arrive around 2 o'clock, but if you had a sympathetic conductor, you could stay on the train for its next run, an hour later as first train to Eupen and back as the first train to Brussels and Ostend. The last train is now cut back to Liège, and they don't allow you to stay on board anymore...

    A really typical Danish combination of local patriotism, national patriotism and humor trying to be self ironic on Denmark's behalf. Much off it is only fully understandable for Danes and people like me who have lived there for several years and who have followed recent local news, e.g. about the fairly new Odense tramway. Interesting also: In contrast to this young CZcamsr several commenters here are old enough to remember the real Danish night trains operated by DSB back in the days before the Great Belt Tunnel was built.
