  • The IC3s have finally been replaced on the Copenhagen - Hamburg intercity train service with DSB's new Vectron locomotives and old DB IC carriages dating back to the times of the Cold War. Join us for an interesting journey to Hamburg Hbf, despite encountering a few minor roadblocks along the way on this journey taken around the launch of the "new" temporary trains in June 2023

Been travelling the Copenhagen-Hamburg a couple of times and it feels like such a long trip. Maybe it just because the brain knows it's less kilometers when travelling by car (although the ferry is an addition). Will be nice when the tunnel between Rödby and Puttgarden is completed, as it will make travels to northern Germany so much easier.

I travelled from Hamburg to København on the overnight train that used the ferry between Putgarden and Rødby, and back again a week later. Trip was just over 6 hours leaving København at 2345 but that didn't matter on an overnight train as no point in getting to Hamburg at 4am and twiddling your thumbs until a cafe opens at 6am for breakfast!
The temperature on one day I was there got to 30 degrees C which I was told by a Finnish girl was the hottest day in Denmark for 50 years. That was 1982, but I understand there have been similar hot days there since. It didn't bother me, as coming from Sydney NSW Oz 30 degree days are quite normal, but many of the locals took to the beach, a short trip on a suburban train.

About the power outlets: Part of the German rolling stock running in these trains has not undergone the latest "ICmod" refurbishment programme. Those only have a few power outlets near the tables of 4 seats. It's a good idea to take along a power bank, because you don't know where you end up when you reserve your seat.
They also didn't get a refurbishment of the air conditioning system ("technical modernization package"), hence the unusable coaches ... it's a bit unreliable after more than 40 years. This rolling stock actually comes from the "technical reserve" of not entirely modernized cars. (Actually it's still the same seats used in the 1980s when the Bpmz series was built, then with seat covers in light green and yellow, the backside of the seats were brown and the sidewalls yellow, very typical for the era around 1980 ...)
Not sending bistro/restaurant coaches to Denmark seems to have a tradition. In the past people were expected to have lunch on the ferry, now the trains aren't using the ferry any more ...

Copenhagen to Hamburg is in either direction just a pain. The old route via Rødby - Puttgarden, or the actual route via Padborg/Pattburg.
I travelled that route a lot of times, and it was so often delayed. Haha, last time in June (2023) my train from CPH was also delayed more than one hour and a coach was missing.
On the way back even the train from Hamburg was totally cancelled.
Funniests delay some years ago in Hamburg: The train was delayed because the driver had forgotten to refuel!
Happy when I am back to Thailand where I nearly have no delays.
At the moment I have to travel between CPH and HAM sometimes....but I rather prefer to travel via Gedser - Rostock. Takes longer, but it is more fun.
I hope DSB and DB one day will improve that service. It is a shame for both companies.

    • @QueentasticTDP
      @QueentasticTDP Před 9 měsíci +2

When the new Femern tunnel is done the travel time will be cut by about 1½ hrs.
Also atm there are trackworks on the current line so that delays too.. Yes they can be better at making sure trains are ready when they need to be.
Also whats needed to be put in mind is that the current line has a fairly stretch in Denmark before Padborg that is Single track and runs MAX capacity at the moment. Our politicians has discussed for ab 40 years now if it should be made double track since the trackbed has been build for DT. Finally 3 years ago it was made so it WILL be upgraded.. Sometime in 2029-2030 LOL

So as one who has been riding on the "New" trains between København and Hamborg, i find them much better then the old trains they used to run on the line, they are more comfortable, they have a much better first class, they are working much better then the old ones where you find many of the toilets broken all the time, doors locking themslevs, AC not working and much more with the old IC3 trains. I say it simple i have found the "New" trains to be both more comfortable both in second and first class, they are working much better then the old ones and. I have never seen anything wrong on the 2 times i have been riding on them both from and to Humborg. The only thing though is that they don't have a restaurant/cafe wagon or just a better form of buying snacks and drinks onboard, they use a dude walking around with a 7-eleven tray of things you can buy. But otherwise i am more then happy to ride on these then our old IC3 trains who i have rode on 4 times to Hamborg and back, 3 times something important was broken

A little info on the IC3 trains.. They were surpposed to be retired when our IC4 trains came. Problem was only half got delivered and had so many breakdowns and issues. And since they spent money to fix them themselves and buy them and these trains was so unreliable. The IC3 trains got modernized as much as possible3 and continues to run though their service period is well overdue.
Luckily we soon get new electric trains and we are modernizing and electrifying more and more lines so the IC3 trains can begin to retire slowly. But it wont be i think untill 2035 that the last ones will run.

It's not so bad if a carriage breaks on locomotive hauled trains is it's generally something to do with the passenger part like a broken window or heating, rather than to do with the wheels,so the carriage can be locked out of use. However it does mean less carriages for the passengers. With under floor engined diesel and electrical unit trains it's a much more serious problem and the whole train may need to be taken out of use.

No earlier connections from Hirtshals, unfortunately. Hopefully the service is not as unreliable as reported, krysser fingrene…

@@Simon-Andersen 2/9/2023: IC 397 cancelled and replaced with IC3 stock until Flensburg.
Our ICE wasn't ready, we had to wait half an hour to move on.
Luckily, even the Nightjet to Innsbruck was too late. It was right behind us in Hamburg, we left Hamburg Hbf with +35.
You can't expect any reliability from this old DB IC rolling stock. Hope the new Talgo cars come soon.

One question I keep asking myself is why neither DB nor DSB together ordered the Railjet sets from Siemens? Are there any regulations regarding universal accessibility for the disabled? It's not surprising that the air conditioning fails on an IC1. They are just 50-70 year old cars. I work at SSI (Siemens Smart Infrastructures), and I know the procedure of the European tender, but I still don't understand why they didn't simply follow ÖBB's lead... Neither DB, nor DSB, nor PKP.

If everything works out, there should be a direct train between Copenhagen and Prague from 2025, going once a day. ČD will use their new train sets called ComfortJet based on Viaggio Comfort, so similar to Railjet. I wonder if they will be allowed to go 230 km/h also in Denmark (at least on the Copenhagen-Ringsted section) as the only train since the new Talgos should only be capable of 200 km/h.

The oldest IC1 coaches are 50, maybe with the exception of a couple of 1st class coaches (Apmz ¹¹¹ were built from 1962). Many of the coaches DSB got look more like those DB had built from the late 70s (like Bpm(m)z²⁹¹).

DSB started a tender around 5 years ago for 8 new coach consists for their international trains to be pulled by their Vectron locomotives. At first Siemens, Bombardier, and Talgo were prequalified. Bombardier later pulled out and let CAF join in their place, who in turn also pulled out later. By the end it was Siemens vs Talgo, and in the end Talgo won the tender. DSB's new talgo trains are coming from the same production line as the Deutsche Bahn's ICE-L trains. If not that, it would've likely come from the same production line as ÖBB's new Railjet consists if Siemens had won, albeit without cab cars.
However since then, with DSB seeing increased demand for international travel, and their original Sandwich locomotive plans falling apart, they made a deal with Talgo, expanding their order from 8 consists to 16, along with buying cabcars for all 16 consists. Afaik, the first 8 consists will enter service as planned in 2024-25, and then in 2027, the remaining 8 will be delivered, along with the cab cars, while the consists get reconfigured from End car-consist-End car, to End car-consist-Cab car.

The railways love multiple unit for some reason, even though it is much less flexible. The PKP should just buy Griffin locomotives from newag and new wagons but with seat standard as is in the pendolino, not the fabric on wood that we have been receiving from FPS Factory.
I don’t think we need to spend money on control car, most stations have enough space for reversing the loco and the only big one that does not (Łódź) can be served by the 40 EMUs they bought. Also there was a tender process for double decker push pulls for lodz, but it seems it is cancelled.

i know its just a personal opinion but last month i was at Hamburg Hbf and i was pretty disappointed seeing generic Vectrons with DB InterCity carriages. the only time i saw a DSB IC3 there was at the carriage sheds outside of the Hbf while the train i was on was arriving from Rostock. if this is the future then it looks... bland. i hope to see the IC3s in Hamburg sometime soon though.
