About having concert T-shirts from the 90's that might have an emotional value to you: I once saw this video of a family of 5 living in a tiny house. The father had a large collection of comic book T-shirts he loved. When they down-sized, the wife made a patchwork blanket for him with these comic book T-shirts that meant so much to him. So, you can downsize and still find a way to hold on to pieces you feel emotional about, but never wear. Great video Jennifer, thank you!

I did a fun experiment last fall. I used my cell phone to photograph my laundry (I hang my stuff to dry after washing on a separate delicate cycle so I just shot the stuff drying in my bathroom) over 3 weeks. I wanted to see what I actually used versus what I planned.
I had a few surprises and I made some changes in what I plan per season.
I noticed my own numbers had a pattern. I DID have a small core. It worked out to approximately 4 pants & 8 tops plus 4 cardigans or jackets. 16 core bits.
I’m a retired Nana, with a fairly quiet life punctuated by grandchildren and cruises with my DH. I prefer a dressy casual more on the dressy side. I never wear jeans let alone exercise gear. I do use aprons for cooking and cleaning.
I found I needed extras to provide psychological comfort. That’s also where colours & prints come into my capsule.
One was a small supply of cotton knit camisole tank tops that work as tops or extra for modesty in lower cut blouses for example.
Dresses & skirts were another group I needed “on hand” plus some sweaters & T shirts if things were unusually cold or warm. But they are my back up cast of players not everyday wear.
And spares of good dress pants bought on sale in my size ready to swap in when a current use core pair began to look tatty.
Knowing I could reach into my larger supply beyond my core that I used weekly gave me the freedom to use a smaller number of items.
I don’t wear dresses or skirts often but I like knowing that they are there when I need them. Same with shorts and T shirts, swim wear etc.
As for accent colours I like to add those in accent groups. Vivienne files calls them the French 5 piece wardrobes & for me it’s often a jacket, cardigan or camisole & scarf, purse or the like & it can range fro 5-10 depending on how often I wear that colour.
My base is always neutral. Black, navy and grey plus white or cream and a little taupe. And that core of 16 or so doesn’t vary much from season to season. I wear more navy in spring & summer with black more in fall to winter. Taupe, grey, white & cream are year round.
The colours are dresses, camisoles & other extras that I don’t count as my core 16.
Colours are my seasonal variations. I wear blush pink & red accents and some mauve year round but yellow, coral, aquas & greens are spring & summer while cranberry tones are fall winter accents.

Thank you Jennifer! I am soooo far off from the ten item wardrobe that I am considering starting with the 30 core-item-wardrobe and wean myself down from there. That would still be a big purge for me! I’m not drowning in clothes; I try on and get rid of clothes regularly and I stay on top of my laundry and keep everything organized, but I do have a lot and I’m starting to think I would benefit from the simplicity of “less”. Wish me luck ;)

I was in a sorority in college and had, what felt like, a billion t shirts. I wore them all the time in college but didn’t after I graduated. So I had a t shirt quilt made so I could cherish that wonderful time in my life without taking up closet or storage space where they wouldn’t be appreciated.

You are so right Jennifer. I'm originally from an island in the Aleutians here in Alaska and I remember my mom and other women in the village hand washing all their families clothes, using a tub, scrub board, and a bar of soap. Mom did this outdoors and then hung them on the line to dry. Can you imagine if all ten of her kids had a huge wardrobe? Oh, and she ironed them by placing a solid iron on the wood stove to heat it up to iron those clothes. My poor mom. She was such a hard worker. I to had way to many clothes until I saw your's and others videos, but not anymore - even with the four seasons here in Alaska I try to maintain and work with less clothes. I love it and I love that you live life somewhat like the past. It makes more sense then how folks live now. Even though we have washing machines, etc., to help us out it doesn't offset much because they are washing tons of clothes. It's all basically common sense. Saves on the budget as well. :-)

Thank you for another inspiring vlog. I started your e-course recently and reviewed my wardrobe, based on it. So a lot of shorts and some shirts were tried on and most of them donated. Now it’s building up time and finding my style. Extras are a help. So I have three cardigans (non in white though) and kept six of my twenty scarfs. Also I found out the colours I feel best in. My extras compliment my core-items. Also: congratulations 🍾🎈🎉 on reaching 50.000 subs! Well deserved!!

I think when some people hear only "10 items," they don't thin kit's possible. What they don't realize are that the extras round out your wardrobe and add variety to your base.

I find it easier to have 5 or 6 item wardrobe during the summer season. I do have to do laundry more frequently, but it is less stressful with some extras, cardi, bathing suit. One summer, I had 4 items, no extras (wasn't working). I couldn't believe how easy it was to live that summer.

My extras are 4 boatneck tees (my favorite to wear) all the exact same style just different colors and 2 are striped, 2 lightweight waterfall cardigans that go with my dresses or all my bottoms, and 4 tank tops layered underneath the cardigans. Everything goes together and it's amazing how much I have to wear! It usually pans out that my extras are about the same quantity as my core. so usually 8-10 extras for me

Thank you for addressing this! I have had this question many times as well. When I first started my Ten Item Wardrobe it was difficult not to fixate on the "right" number of items. After living it out for a year now, I am so much more relaxed about the number of items, because now my focus is on having coordinated pieces that work together and reflect my style so that I am comfortable and confident with each outfit I can create from my core pieces. The "magic number" naturally occurs and viewing the number 10 as a starting point or "ball park" number really works for me. Also, the number of extras in my wardrobe effortlessly reduced in size as I now have only the things that enhance my core items - if that makes sense! 💗Robin

It's funny because I have written down my ten-item *plan* of core items with an abundance of, what I'm calling, "special occasion" (wedding, funeral), lingerie and "extras" (yes, three separate *extra* categories). And, going through this playlist, near the end of the one before this, I was thinking, "How many "extras" would be considered too much and really, back to where I started?"! Haaa! Then, your first words was the question you get asked a lot - "How many extras should I have?" I think what I wrote down for extras was three t-shirts, a dress for weddings and a dress for funerals and a limited number of night clothes and an decent amount of all things underwear, but not too many. How's that for a list!! No need to reply Jennifer, I'm just rambling. I love your videos.

Hi Jennifer! Congratulations on 50k! I know I shouldn't play the comparison game with others, but I sometimes wonder how some women seem to fit so much into their day! I should have more time! The only thing I've managed to get a grip on is how much time I spend getting ready, which I am happy to have accomplished! (decluttering excess makeup and only keeping 1 thing in each category, simplifying my skincare) But the wardrobe is so difficult for me! I did sign up for your online class and I really need to work through that again. I really appreciate this current video series, but I do admit I am very anxious. What if I get rid of something and then regret it? Can I really distinguish between the core items and the extras? I feel silly because there are sooo many things other things more important to get anxious about, but I know getting this wardrobe thing figured out will be key to freeing my time and my mind to accomplish more important things.

The extras are either classified as layering pieces (tee shirts, camisoles, sweaters/ cardigans, etc.) or special targeted items such as pajamas, exercise clothes, special occasionwear, etc. Pants don't fit into that category, therefore, they are core items. Hope that helps!
