Avoiding The FAIL Of My Last LS SWAP *67 Camaro Rear-End Upgrades*

- I bought a 67 Camaro RS for only $6,500 and I'm taking it to LS Fest East in only 6 days.
Now that the Powerglide transmission and the LS2 from J&J Auto Wrecking is ready to go, we're going to try to install it and get everything else ready to go as well. As always, things don't exactly go according to plan. The LS2 is getting the complete Holley EFI treatment and some BRAND NEW HK Wheels as well. To get that power to the ground we're rebuilding the entire rear-end and adding a posi-trac from Yukon Gear and Axle.

This has been one of my favorite builds you've done. I would love to see a full restoration of the paint and interior
Oh it's happening, as soon as it gets back I'm starting over with the frame-off. 💯
@@WatchJRGo Posi-tively BETTER of COURSE!!
Hey Riley is that the moon and Antarctica album cover?
Daegan Jones yes it is!
@@TheVIdeosOnly Nice man that's sick. That's my third place MM album behind Lonesome Crowded West and This Is A Long Drive. Gravity rides everything smacks though its like crack for my ears haha
IMPORTANT - Those mono leaf springs get brittle over time and now that you have LS power and the 10 bolt posi you're going to break those old springs guaranteed. If you have time install multi leaf springs to avoid disaster. Nice build - good luck!
Yup those springs and shackles are gonna twist like taffy. Goneasy on burnouts and after event break the car so you can fix it, axles are gonna twist like taffy. Too....
Seals are gonna leak tooo
You guys are true professionals such as myself. Sitting on the floor in shorts and flip flops working hard. You have more fun tools than I have, but we work the same.
When popping off a rusted rotor once, it landed on my flip flop-clad foot. It was not fun. Now I just keep one of the lugs on.
That's not sludge, that's rear diff fudge. Make Hoovie a cake :) .
When you get time, please try to do the "flipping a car in one day" videos again!
I've got one planned! 🍻
@@WatchJRGo Awesome!
@@WatchJRGo Awesome! Keep em coming :D
@@WatchJRGo Buy an altima with a bad CVT and missing front bumper
Hey JR. Awesome build but I thought you would have known better that to torque up ring gear while it was still hot. The bolts wont be 55ftlb when they cools down. Cant wait to see the finished car.
SAFETY GLASSES! You ever seen a bearing race EXPLODE! Maybe even a face shield as well!
Wouldn't want to see you lose your eyes, buddy!
Just finished watching you and Tyler with the Ford comparison then this notification popped up
We shot this video and that one yesterday 💯
WatchJRGo putting on some work! 👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽
Hi JR. Just when I was heading for bed you put this video up. Fun to watch. Thanks.
You've got some really good friends to have them let you always be using their shops and tools.
"We almost got to try and start it today" ...........Gas tank laying in the background. HA! Love this series!
Good job. Have been meaning to refurbish my rear diff for years. Just one of those jobs that creates more work as you go on. I did manage the pinion oil seal which was fun. Keep up the good work.
I can’t wait until it’s done this give me motivation to work on my dads 69 camaro
Good job JR. I think what viewers fail to realize is this is not a final build. You are on a time crunch for LS Fest. There is only so much time in day. Got get it together and rolling. Keep up the good work. From Dayton Ohio
I am glad you changed the axle seals and bearings.
Dude, i love watching all the wild stuff you do. Go in, get your hands dirty, learn along the way...this is what makes for fantastic CZcams content. I’m hooked, brother. Keep up the great work!
after a few days I am recalling how many times the word turn key was used earlier. It never is turn key.
I love your channel man!! Just started watching back when you all bought those 3 cars a few videos back.
I have seen the wheels pull out on a ford van on a busy 6 lane freeway in San Antonio, TX on a ford van. Whole wheel and axle came out at 70mph. Dude managed to stop it without incident and get pulled over. That wheel and axle bounced and wobbled around in heavy traffic from the right lane all the way to median and nobody tagged it! Craziest thing I've seen in a while!
If I could help Watch JR Goes and Joshs work on the rear end of the 67 Camero I would drink the cold Bartle Skeets and pack up the Hash Pipe with Rocky and get all schmoked up.
I've got a 69 RS, had it since 1978. Love first gen camaros
Love these restomod type builds.
Nice progress. I hope you're planning on some Cal-Tracs, or at least a set of old-school slapper bars. Otherwise those monoleaf rear springs are just going to wrap up when you get on it, resulting in wheel hop instead of smoke. They were notorious for it even at stock power levels, which is why Chevy dropped that design after one year and went with conventional multi-leaf springs for '68.
So excited, this build came outta no where but I’m here for it lmao
Putting some extra work editing and filming! 👌🏽👌🏽
It might be only 15min but sure it takes a few hours during the day!
3:13 in, you guys didn't see all the slop in that front pinion? That's where your noise is. A rear end should NEVER clunk like that. I have a feeling they are going to slap it together, send it, and blow it up Like roll smokes diff. Ok. Should watch the whole vid. Good job JR. Little tip, take the ring gear and bearings and put in a 250 degree oven for 30-45 minutes, put the carrier in the freezer overnight. The bearings and ring gear will just drop on like butter.
All I know is it runs perfectly now... and the Rolls ripped the bolts out of the floor that hold the IRS, the diff on it didn't break at all 🍻
@@WatchJRGo I amended my post, looks like you got it good. Did you change the pinion bearings by chance?
After inspecting their build, I'm pretty confident that one will have at least 30 minutes of decent 11s in it, which is all he needs right now. I'd send it too without fear. I was more worried that he implied he had the entire weight of the axles, wheels, tires, and presumably brakes hanging on the axle seals.
But... Same logic applies: It will do a few cool burnouts. So, meh...
Looking good. Hopefully it works out better than the Rolls
Flip flops, flames 🔥 and posi trac
I watch your and hooves videos all the time!!!
I like the beat up paint look with the great interior and "guts"
Also looking forward to the interior finish.
Helpful hint.. you can always bake parts in an oven to expand. Its better to evenly heat metal to get it to expand
Quad turbos with NOS, bruh. Radical!
Hoovie managed to post a video before you??? **le gasp** Also, shoutout to Jonny for being awesome and always letting you use his shop to get things done. Stand up guy.
Nice mask!! I’ve been waiting and watching. Thank you!!!
Damn Camaro's FLEXIN' w/stance! Just needs fenders to reach over the tires
Episode 1: “Tuuuuurn Key!”
Today: * pry off rear diff cover* ”Eeeewwwwww What is THAT!?”
I really like channel. You deserve so much more subs
Good to see that GM know how to write a date properly.
Incredible talent, hard work and investment going into these repairs. Makes me want to stick with still under warranty vehicles :: )
5:45 That must be a machinist claw hammer. I like them for pulling out those stubborn rivets!
How does posi-trac work? It just does son, it just does.
Nobody knows how it works! 😂
It's only Plymouth posis that are a mystery. Science has answers for the other brands.
Honestly I'm four years into a mechanical engineering degree and trying to learn how modern LSDs work makes my head hurt. Insane how somebody came up with this stuff with all the clutches and everything.
@@rvne3959 A simple clutch or cone style LSD is actually really easy to understand. You have friction plates (clutches) held against each other by spring tension from side-to-side. Once the friction exceeds what the springs can hold, the clutches slip and the axles are allowed to move at different speeds like an open diff. That's why it's "limited slip". Something like a true locker doesn't slip at all once it locks up under load. Basic lockers are even easier to understand. Look up something like a Richmond Powertrax and you should be able to follow along from the installation manual.
If you're looking at stuff like a torsen or some of the e-trac stuff, those can be a lot more complex. I'm no expert, but the torsen is basically just a crazy series of hypoid gear sets that are just always fighting each other and are much more difficult to understand without one in your hands.
@@TheBrokenLife I agree regular lsd is pretty easy to understand. When I was in school we had a cutaway of a torsion and I never could figure out how it worked.
Permeates Right Stuff doesn’t have much of a shelf life after the applicator is cut. The case of 3oz tubes is a pain to use on the larger gaskets. The pressurized cans aren’t too bad.
I’m loving this build. I hope you re-body that car.
Nice progress 👍😌👍,Liked, StaySafe
That "Balls McGirk" LS2 mated to the 1st Gen 2-spd Powerglide pops helped you prepare is going to destroy that "10 bolt posi" even without a turbocharger added.. 70 was the last year a 12 bolt posi were offered by GM.. but a Ford 9" would still last longer if you plan to do "donuts".
The rear differential is an amazing price of engineering.
Good old powerglides, first gear til 65 mph
That is going to be a crazy high gear set . Open diff , small block ...3.23 or higher . So go with 3.73 or a little higher .
I thought that you were doing a new body? or floors?...ur my fav car guy to watch....love your videos.
Car Ninja: wears safety boots Mike can hammer on all day long....
Jr and Josh: wearing safety flip-flops and manual eye shields :D
1st! LOL. Just kidding. I will have to go check out you and Hoovie's video after this. I'm loving the Camaro project.
What about that 10th bolt @ 12:21 ? Stripped or lost? Eh, at least it's at 11 o'clock and it's got the cheese wiz on both sides. Ready to see some burnouts!
It was never there, probably from someone messing with it in the past. It's a longer bolt of course because that bracket is supposed to mount there 🍻
I don't know I probably would have changed out that U-joint as well seems how it is an old probably original but who knows throwing that posi unit in there it may positively break hope not though I want to see a successful burn out with this monster. I think one more failure on the road and it would absolutely break my heart. Haha you guys stay safe stay well and as always God bless
More power is always the solution.
After LSfest, Add T-Tops for style!!!
Frame twister, easy come easy go.
wearing flip flops while using a torch. Just like my garage lol
Nice vid with Hoovie
So cool!
that looked like 3/4 inch play to me! :)
What I’m really surprised at is that single leaf rear suspension, I thought only 6 cylinder cars got that. My 69 firebird only had the 350 2 bbl and it had the multi leaf suspension.
Reminds me of the 4 lug 6 cylinder mustang verses the 5 lug v8.
Yes!!
How do you secure the drive shaft in....they seem to come out a little too easy
You and Tyler have good chemistry together. You and him should do more videos together.
I have a 2003 gmc sierra 2500hd 4x4 with the allison transmission and the big block 496 (8100) ... I need help I did a radiator swap on the truck and lost the lower radiator hose clip.... it looks to be about 2-1/2inches and it's a w- clip style .... I need to locate where I can get this w-clip asap please if you can help me locate where I can get one for sure I'd really appreciate it soooo much .....
I think you'll be more happy with a more refined driveability and streetable torsen differential.
"A typical open has a 1.1 to 1 bias ratio due to some small internal friction. The non spinning wheel gets 1.1 times as much torque (10% more) than the spinning wheel. The Torsen differential for Camaro SS has a 2.2 to 1 bias ratio, therefore, the non spinning wheel gets 2.2 times as much torque as the spinning wheel. The Torsen will support up to a 2.2:1 torque imbalance before it differentiates (unlike the open), and then will differentiate at the 2.2:1 ratio. With the spool, there is actually a negative torque on the outside wheel in a turn making it difficult to turn in the intended path. This can also occur with spring preloaded limited slip differential under low torque. The Torsen applies a positive torque to both drive wheels in a turn. Another benefit of Torsen: in an aggressive turn, the inside rear wheel loses some traction and the Torsen then biases torque to the outside wheel which tends to pull the car through the turn (instead of sliding sideway). If the rear loses traction and the driver releases the throttle, Torsen biases the engine braking torque to the outside wheel which helps to lessen the severity of a spin-out."
Are you going to go with 4 wheel disc brakes?
A cowl hood wouldn’t be bad, maybe not stock looking, but it would be good to get you around until you figure out a permanent solution. Unless that permanent solution is happening sooner than later lol
Better get the muffler bearings replaced also.
Put hood spacers where it bolts to the hinges import tuners do that. 1.improves engine cooling. 2. You won’t have to spend money on an after market hood. You can find the hood spacers on eBay.👍
my pop tore down a 70 SS Chevelle and took the 12 bolt rear out of it and put it in the '64 el camino when I was like 10 ish, the wheelbase is so wide compared to the stock 10 bolt that he had to cut the quarter panels at the wheel wells to make tires fit
your father butchered a good car for no reason
My neighbor put a 10 bolt from a Camaro under a Vega and didn't shorten the axles. Looked goofy as hell.
awww man really enjoyed these vid, can you say gearhead, haha.
What weatherpak kit is that...?
Is that drum brakes I see on the rear wheels?
Where do you get the gates hose clamps
Nice nice nice 👌🏼👌🏼
I did watch your vid with Hoovy and I have a weird question at 10:27 camera view to the right of the rear view mirror there is a black box what looks to have a CAT 5 cable plug in. What is that for? Just curious.
Did you end up upgrading your front or rear suspension? I have a 68 with mono leads and OG control arms and prepping for the LS swap.
Go for cowl hood if needed
Rear is gonna go boom. The 8.2’s don’t hold at all. If you wanted a cheap upgrade that would hold you should have picked up a used 8.5 out of a nova and sent it. I’d also be very careful with those old mono leafs. I’d be willing to bet if it’s not already cracked inside the front leaf pocket it will be after your first good burnout.
To get a true back in the sixties look, lift the back 4 inches!
You should both axles out when removing the gears unless your replacing seals.
You really should make a competition on episodes for how many time you have to go to oreillyauto. That would be fun
JR - why did you not paint inside the engine bay?
That is a 10 bolt rear. With the extra hp, it needs a 12 bolt. My 65 Chevelle bought new with a 300hp 327 and 4 speed manual came from the factory with a 12 bolt rear diff with an eaton posi.
I have lots of 12 bolt shims left over from a gear change in my 69SS 396 Chevelle back in 1974. I bought a full set from chevrolet before the job.
Wonder if the slop was from the spider gears. Look at how much the carrier moves at 3:10 before the spiders move.....
You guys need to get and wear some safety glasses. Especially with that press. I've had things flying using them and the glasses saved my a%^.
You wear safety glasses on your ass?
@@TheFracturedRooster Lmao
Start wet sanding the body with 320
Ending with 1200 then primer black .
Seems like we’re pretty close...*CLANG! CLUNK! CRASH!*
When you had the drivetrain & engine out why did you not send the body out to get painted?
I would temporarily find a donor hood, and cut out the appropriate holes for the hood to close.
Watched that video earlier today
Saw you on Hoovies, he roasted your sweet truck. Lol.. He is such a goof..lol
This better look like something Barrette Jaxon would build when it’s finished
cool got it at 1 minute in
Wish the shimming process was shown. I could use some visual schooling there.
December 31st 1967 was a Sunday..
Is there more stuff that happens off camera or is an LS swap just that easy?
I’m here!!!
