  • I fly solo in the helicopter just a few days after passing the commercial helicopter skill test. On this navigation flight I take a similar route to the one I was given to fly on my skill test for the CPL. I depart Leicester and track North East towards Cottesmore, then head South to Desborough before flying West towards Bruntingthorpe. After a quick look there I return to Leicester. Can't wait to get flying again and come down to see you and your colleagues flying and check out the 109 Grand. Hopefully you'll get your FI rating fairly quickly so we can go flying, would love to have a go in the G2 :-)

    A really interesting flight Rory, and very professionally handled! I use Bruntingthorpe regularly as a VRP back into Tatenhill.. just up the road from you. A terrible shame the Vulcan isn't there any longer, but an interesting airfield all the same! I'm looking forward to the curry evenings at Leicester when they get up and running again. 👌👏

    I passed my skills test for PPL(H) last week. Now waiting for the CAA to process and send out my licence so that I can go and start flying solo. Is quite a long time since I was last out on my own.

      @@RoryOnAir Great, I used to work at Goodwood as a helicopter engineer. I love the pre-flight stuff and start up check lists, i got most of my pilots licence on Enstrom before the company went bust, i have flown Enstrom, Jet Ranger, Gazelle, and R22. Also Heughs 500. Great channel keep up the good work.

      Ha ha - yeah it might stick but actually until the physical licence paperwork arrives from the CAA you still need to use a student call sign. Since I filmed this the little blue wallet arrived so I won’t need the word ‘student’ anymore. 👍

    Here in Australia they have started to issue your license electronically with QR codes attached. Saves a bunch of waiting time since your PPL/CPL's are issued instantly now. I'm not sure if its better otherwise but hey.

    75 more hours needed before you can train for Instructor rating? When will your CPL enable any revenue to be created in the interim.

      Thanks very much. Technically I could be earning with the licence now. If you had a heli and wanted me to do air tours or fly you from A to B I could do that now, but most people don’t want to employ brand new pilots so the instructor route is normal.

    Hi Rory, nice to see you in the air again. Really interesting stuff.
    I like Bruntingthorpe, I well remember seeing the 'Rolling Thunder', jet fast taxi events, awesome.
    If you become an instructor, does that help with hour building towards a commercial pilot job?
    Also have you covered off IFR and night ratings etc yet?

      Thanks Muso. Yes, instructors can log around 600 hours a year at some busy schools (Helicentre Aviation being one such busy school) so it’s a great way to gain experience and log time while helping others achieve their own flying goals. I have a night rating but no IR - that’s a big course itself.

      Thanks Rory, I think that instructing can be very rewarding too. I read a story whereby a woman with stage four cancer, was told by her oncologist, to find something to occupy her mind (there was little hope for her, even with her continuing treatment). She took a trial flight in a helicopter, then took lessons, beat cancer and, iirc is now a commercial helicopter pilot! Remarkable!

    Congratulations - the closest I'll ever come is a simulated Cabri but if you ever fly the Cabri in XPlane11 or any other sim I'd be really interested to hear your comments about how close to real life a sim can be (or not).

    Is progressing to FI a natural step towards hours building for the full CPL? Ohhh a couple of VC10s on the deck at Bruntingthorpe, brings back memories.

      Yes, it seems to be a good way to go because you gain a lot of hours and experience quite quickly. I’d like to visit Bruntingthorpe at some stage actually.

      Actually no, although a ‘Helicentre’ callsign is a force of habit. Until the physical licence paperwork arrives from the CAA you still need to use a student call sign. Since I filmed this the little blue wallet arrived so I won’t need the word ‘student’ anymore. 👍

    Why 'Student golf....' your not a student now or am I missing something? Well done!! How many hours do you need to build before Bristow do a type rating for you?

      At the time of filming, my licence was still being processed by the CAA so we do a briefing with an instructor and fly on the student callsign. My paperwork has turned to no so I won’t need to use it again. As for a type rating - that would be amazing if that happened but I guess we’ll have to wait and see!

    * the green fields of England are softening and bring relaxation.
    *When you hear a registration number close to yours over the radio it really makes me lift attention. (I used to think O' s#+t).
    * are you in the ballpark for employment on a private, government or media helicopter?
    P.s If flying over any old military airfields, I would like to hear some commentary.

      @@RoryOnAir just seems weird on a private flight. I don't know anyone regardless of ratings who wears a uniform for a private flight. But congratulations on the CPL regardless
