    Word has it the 2008 328i has a keylock on the trunk, located just above the license plate. ... You could also apply 12VDC to pop the trunk as described here: The only solution that worked for me was to run down the wiring diagrams and locate the "central locking drive, trunk lid" that's the solonoid that actually releases the trunk. Most of the effort was getting the information - the job itself was actually pretty easy. Here it is:
    a) Take out the two torx screws just below the glovebox on the left and right to remove the panel below the glovebox. Disconnect the power socket and the light which are attached to the panel.
    b) Below the fusebox there is a big flat horizontal junction box (Junction Box A4010). You can spot it easily because there are two big connectors going into it facing you. There is a flat wide connector plugging into the BACKSIDE of this same junction box. There are about a dozen small wires going into it and one big brown ground. This is the one you need to get to. (Connector X14270) Ideally, you'd want to disconnect this, but I could not manage to get it out from that position.
    c) Identify the small wire which is gray with a stripe of green (it looks mostly gray). If you get the connector out, this is pin 12. It's the only grey/green wire in the bunch though.
    d) You need to very briefly apply 12 volts to this lead to pop the trunk. I did it the ugly way - I very carefully razored off some of the insulation to expose it. Then I just attached some leads to my new battery. I stuck the ground lead into brown wire connector for the power socket I had disconnected when I removed the glove box panel. Then I just brushed the positive lead against the exposed pin 12 wire. The trunk popped instantly.

    Hi Ivan, excellent diagnosis as usual. Love your work and enjoying watching your old euro videos. 😂Had to comment on this one as a known issue on E9X 3 series and E8X 1 series cars built between 2006 and 2009 ish. There is a TSB on it and the fix is a new red wire about 12 inches long with a massive clamp which fixes onto old red wire which is cut in footwell. New wire comes with a new connector to fuse box which has a bolt to tighten so it holds tight on the fuse box input tongue, unlike original which gets loose over time. TSB details fuse box inspection and if any sign of burning on fuse box, fuse box must also be replaced. Best from UK.

  • @alexlongpre4527
    @alexlongpre4527 Před 3 lety +1

    Very common problem on these cars. There was a recall on that... Or maybe it was just a TSB 🤔
    Pretty sure it was a recall though. I left the dealer 10 years ago, so my memory is faint, but look it up.

The connection of the positive at the fuse box may degrade, resulting in an intermittent loss of electrical power." Scotty Kilmer was diagnosing an Audi A4 which had the same sort of keyless boot lid which had no battery in it.
    He was diagnosing it for a customer who pulled a Swifty on him by saying his car had too much wrong with it & he asked him if he wanted to swap it for a 10.year old Audi A4 that he had parked at his workshop.
    At first it only appeared as if it needed a new battery but when Scotty Kilmer opened the boot lid it had no be battery in it,the plot thickens when he fitted a new battery & the engine wouldn't rotate when it was started.
    He got a long wrench & socket onto the crankshaft pulley bolt & he couldn't rotate the engine by hand,he checked the spark plugs & there was evidence of oil burning which he says is very common in the turbocharged 2 litre models where the engine just starts to burn oil then seizes up.
    So that's why I wouldn't buy an Audi or a BMW,the Audi will have mechanical problems like that & the BMW seems to be crap for the price that you pay for them !

    Another poor engineering marvel. That cable dwarfed the ampers of the terminator it seems. Hard to understand this connection would fail unless it was poorly designed which is likely. The moisture probably didn't help much but the location is under the windshield so, those engineers should have figured on some water intrusion if a windshield would get cracked or a seal/bonding to the windshield frame were to fail. Sad but this repair proves the idea wasn't well thought out for the real world.
    A replacement cable appears to be the best solution due to the condition of the cable in the trunk. If the inside fuse box got melted too, then the Salvage Yard idea was the best plan with the exception to, upgrading that battery connector as per the TSB.

    German engineering. The wire can handle a lot more current than the connector.
