- One of the most underrated badminton players of all time is Chen Long. Despite winning two World Championships and three different Olympic medals, few people talk about how good Chen Long was. With the Paris 2024 Olympics coming, Chen Long has been seen helping the Chinese national team's Shi Yu Qi and Li Shi Feng prepare. There have been noticeable changes to these players' playstyles that include elements of Chen Long's gameplay. In this video, we'll discuss Chen Long's strategy and the style that led him to win 2X World Championships and 3 Olympic Medals.

Great video, but worth noting this strategy only doable if your stamina and endurance is better than your opponent, otherwise they’ll just gas you out by moving you around the court 😂 Wasn’t a problem for Chen Long with his 2 sets of lungs and planet sized thighs lmao
It really depends - if your shot quality is better and you move them around, you might actually be able to spend less energy. Playing those neutral shots limits your opponents' options in most cases, meaning you get to conserve energy the majority of the time where they don't play the very difficult option.
If you fall into his trap of attacking slightly out of position where he's able to play the cross block, you're the one scrambling and spending more energy.
I will grant you that you definitely need very good conditioning if you want to play like this reliably and even against very skilled players (that can put you under pressure by playing the unlikely, difficult options and really force you to move)
Great points! Really depends on what feels more tiring for you. Chen Long's defensive style relies more on having strong legs, so it's more of a strategy that'll make you sore. I personally get more tired running around the court and smashing all the time 😆
This is what I was gonna say. A lot of Chen Long's rallies were won by his stamina abuse. Insane athlete, if anyone else was feeding LCW those net blocks they wouldn't have the stamina to continously retrieve them at such high quality as well.
@@MrJ4ckie Look at Kodai Naraoka. His shot quality is up there, he prefers the rally play style with consistent neutral shots, but he gets shit on by actually good players performing well. He is simply not long enough nor atheltic enough to have the success of CL. And this is a top 10-20 player we are talking about. I can totally see players like LSF benefitting from CL's tactics and advice though.
Guys, don’t let this channel die! Ever!!!
as so many people have said, the most underrated player in the shadow of ld/lcw. also his backhand while nothing fancy is consistently played with high quality. good video anyway may I request analysis of lee hyun il who won his last title in his late 30 almost 40
Thank you for commenting! I love Chen Long's backhand as well, definitely one of the best of all-time. Thank you for suggesting Lee Hyun Il as well. We'll add him to our analysis queue!
This video was fantastic, I was really mesmerized by the gameplay and your commentary actually felt insightful? The clips you selected often highlighted the things you were speaking about in ways that were clear to me. I really feel like I learned a lot. I overwhelmingly play doubles so it's interesting to think about what does extrapolate out and what doesn't. Thank you so much for the video and all the work that went into editing and script writing!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed 😁
Really appreciate this video
That being said, the magic of Chen Long is the extreme speed of movement backwards that we can't readily copy which makes his middle block more effective.
He hovers very close to the front, knowing you'll have to lift, and then gets back there in a blink to hit the shuttle downwards
My legs are too puny for that
We all need strong legs :) That being said, it is a little easier to move back if you block further. It's difficult for your opponent to push/lift all the way to the back from the middle of the court compared to the front court.
Great initiative mate. The video is very helpful!
Thank you for your support!
great video!!
Thank you!
A video on Chong wei's consistency throughout the years too😢
1:20 he literally has one of the most lethal and feared smashes. No one had as many smash winners against LCW like CL. LD used to get around 20 ish smash winners against LCW in 3 sets. Chen long gets about 15 in 2 sets with LCW.
Thank you for the comment! There is no doubt that Chen Long's smash is very good, but have you thought about why he is able to play so many smash winners?
Great video! Let's keep it coming :)
Thank you!
Very good player.
Love these types of content. Can you do a breakdown of famous players over the years and what made them successful.
Thank you for the comment! And yes, we will definitely do that! Are there any players you specifically want?

Hi great video but I have a question:
You say at the end to play down at the back court with half smashes and drives but when would it be appropriate to play a clear in Chen long’s case.
Thanks
1:20 is Lin Dan, not Chen Long - you can see it from the playing style and the fact, that he is left handed. Also, the opponent is Kenneth Jonassen - a player active before the Chen Long era!
Yep! That was done on purpose - we're comparing how Chen Long doesn't often play fancy deceptions that players such as Lin Dan excelled at using.
Very good🎉🎉
👍
It's like what I teach highschool and elementary players, just have a good quality lob/clear... And play that game in order to beat more advanced players. Lol 🤭😅
Haha! Thank you for your support!
Do Lin Dan next plz
Lin Dan is coming
i subbed fr
Thank you for your support!
@@getgoodatbadminton8406 keep it up dude your channel growing fr btw do you play badminton just asking
Can you do one for Kento Momota please and thanks?
100% will!
Did you use AI for the commentary?
Yeah we do!
why is blocking to the middle better than blocking to the side?
it limits the angle of your opponent's push/lift which makes it easier to intercept or to take late forehand/backhand
one of the signature block by LD too
not just left & right middle , also the front & back middle
basically not many angle option the opponents could work with
Great points made by @samuell2507 and @vitorlam9046
More chance of them messing up the acccurscy of the lift putting to left or right
I found a diamond channel
