My dad bought nearly new X reg one in 1983. It must have been one of the very last ones made. Bright blue with gold double pinstripe and tan interior. As a back seat passenger I thought it was pure luxury compared to his pevious car, a Mk2 Escort.

Same engine used in Mini cooper/metro etc but only the ones in Allegros smoked. My dad was a BL mechanic and a very good one at that and had no idea why.

David Gibson ,I too was a mechanic and an engine reconditioner, when these engines came to me for oil burning I stripped them down for inspection, the bores were great but too smooth so I used to hone them with rougher stones and re-ring the Pistons, the inlet valves had little O rings for seals which used to split and let oil down the intake hence the smoke, once this was done no further problems but like your dad why it only happened to Allegros no idea.
