- I gave birth to my baby boy Theo almost two months ago and I'm finally sharing my birth story. As a physician (and now dermatologist), I have experience in labor and delivery, so I was able to apply this experience when I gave birth to my son. I went in for a planned labor induction and received an epidural to make the process as comfortable as possible. Congratulations! As the grandmother of teenagers now, I still enjoy hearing birth stories. My first was born over 43 years ago. "Birthing rooms" were just being tried out. There was only one and it was first come first serve. All the drama over the birth happened beforehand. My doctor retired when I was 8 1/2 mos., the hospital closed their ob dept. and the new doctor was leaving the country the day after I was due. I didn't want to be induced because then I wouldn't be able to be in the birthing room and the epidural scared me more than the pain. Well, this new doctor was great and just gave me a shot of pitocin without IV. It kicked things off and I got to stay in the birthing room. After we held her and nursed for an hour I felt good enough to get into a wheelchair and carried her to the nursery and handed her to the nurse. It was the best for that time. By the time my son was born, my husband had become a paramedic, but hadn't delivered a real baby. My doctor helped me push (still no epidural) and my husband caught my son. Not bad for the olden days!
I am currently 35 weeks pregnant with my first child and I won’t lie that I am a little anxious about the birth experience. However, watching your video made me feel so much better. I know every pregnancy and delivery will be very different from person to person, but positive birth stories such as yours help me feel much more positive and open about my own. Thankfully more options are available for the birth experience. Soon it will be 39 years ago when I had my first of two. I didn’t want a needle in my back as epidural mishaps were not uncommon. I proposed hypnosis (LOL) but my OBGYN was having none of that as he had no experience with that approach and didn’t want to risk his malpractice insurance. Took Lamaze classes. Both babies were 2 weeks late, both times I was set up for involuntarily induction. I had heard it “threw” you into immediate hard contractions. I didn’t want that because I was planning on natural childbirth. The day before I was to be induced, I tried to get labor in motion on my own. The first time I drove a pickup without power steering or power breaks over bumpy windy country roads. It worked! Labor started at midnight. The 2nd time, the night before scheduled induction, we had sex. It worked too! It was hard but I kept refusing meds,epidural. Eventually it got even harder but I have a high pain tolerance and well… too stubborn wanting to take one contraction at a time. I kept in control, but my husband was a mess. My labor nurse gave me a new breathing technique, rolled me on my side and coached me through the first birth successfully. The same nurse was there 3 years later for my second which was a much harder set of double contractions. I still wanted to deliver without an epidural. Nurse Nicolette coached me through that time as well…as a result my 2nd daughter’s middle name is Nicole, in honor of that wonderful nurse.
Congratulations on becoming a mother and thank you for sharing your journey! As an OBGYN, just like you had mentioned in the video, the best birth plan I tell my patients is to go with the flow. So happy to hear that your induction went so well!
What a lovey birth story. Both my children came early by a few weeks and thankfully healthy with no issues. I was with my daughter when her first two children were born and it was beautiful. I cried a river and couldn’t stop. So glad everything went well and you and baby are healthy.
What a beautiful family you have - congratulations on your sweet bundle! I have one son (now 32) but had a similar experience, just not induced. The epidural helped me to actually enjoy the labor and delivery and not be so exhausted after delivery. I was an OB/GYN nurse for many years, and hands down those that chose to use nothing really had a harder time and were worn out after the baby got here. I realize this may not be the case for all, but seeing it up close and personal helped me make my decision. During all my years of assisting with deliveries, there was truly not one single time I heard that first cry that it did not bring tears to my eyes - literally every single time! What a wonderful birth story! It makes me want to have another (but I'm not ready to have two kids yet). My birth story was quite traumatic, with the hospital refusing me over a weekend with acute pains in my abdomen. I finally nagged them enough to come in, and something was a bit off with the baby. I was also having contractions (that I couldn't even feel, they were nothing compared to what I had been experiencing) and was 3 cm dilated. I got a delivery room, and 10 mins later my baby's heartrate dropped to 60 BPM and didn't go back up. Soo you can imagine all the drama that ensued, people ran in, they tried different things to see if anything helped, but within what felt like a minute, I was rushed to be put under for a C-section, and my daughter was born like 5-10 mins later. My waters were very discolored, and she had both swallowed and inhaled it. The doctor later said she seemed to remember the umbilical cord was around her neck. Her APGAR score was 2 at first, but then got up to 4. I had to be told / read all this, as I woke up a couple of hours later, while my husband was with her in the children's clinic in another building. I got to meet her when she was 7 hours old. There was a lot, but during 6 days in the NICU, she got better every day, and she is now a healthy 13 month old running around 🥰
It was smart to check on staffing at the hospital before going in for your induction. I went in for the delivery of my second baby during a nurses’ strike. It was wild! Congratulations on the safe delivery of your wonderful little son!

Thanks for sharing! Im 37 weeks pregnant on Friday. Planning to get an elective induction at 39 weeks and 3 days. I've definitely felt some negativity from some people about choosing this. This video really is encouraging! Im so excited and very relieved to hear that there is os no risks to our son with an induction. I know the doctors say this but it's good to hear again. Beautiful birth story. I'm glad it went so well. Your Theo sure is an adorable baby from the pictures you've posted so far. I've seen several babies born in my life including strangers in nursing school and my own sister and nieces and nephews. It's always so amazing even if I don't know the parents. A new life is such a miracle in so many ways and it is so neat to be a part of. I always get teary eyed. May God bless your baby Theo.
What a wonderful story and congratulations to you and your husband! Mine are 22 and 24 but hearing your story brought it all back. I also chose induction and have no regrets. My son's delivery was similar---incredibly fast! My ob-gyn was shocked and I had no time for the epidural but it was fine! The 9 minute delivery was key:)).

I am much older than you but I delivered 3 babies I was determined to have natural childbirth with my first baby My water had broken the evening before but had an appointment the next day. My doctor said that as long as I didn’t go into labor just come for the appointment I took my hospital bag with me because I thought they would induce When my doctor checked, I was at 5 cm so he sent me to the ER for admission Since my contractions were not very strong they administered potosin That got attention but I not only had him with no pain meds, they had to use forceps because he was stuck in the birth canal Not the best experience but my second baby was a more normal labor and delivery also with no meds My third baby I did have an epidural but only because I was having a tubal ligation Enjoyed your story and congratulations on your beautiful baby!

That's amazing being able to give birth being present and with no pain whatsoever. I've heard stories about friends birthing at home, no medical staff, and with no pain relief. I honestly admire them so much - I would be scared af ( I don't think I'll be able to handle the pain beginning to end)

Breathing/pushing exercises, yoga or movement, massage, etc. Trying to prevent tearing and a long, painful birth as much as possible! 🙏
Congratulations!! Theo is beautiful. Love seeing updates on Theo. So happy you had your Mom there for support. I had my Mom when I got home with my first. Mother in law came 3 weeks later and was ABSOLUTELY NO SUPPORT!!! Came to question breastfeeding :( Again that first experience is really special. A true miracle.
This was such a cute video! I love hearing birth stories and, like you, I’ll cherish those first moments with my two babies forever. With my first, I had been having painless contractions for several hours and then started timing them, so when I checked into L&D it was very anti-climactic lol. I ended up being 5cm so they did keep me, and I was planning unmedicated but I got to 7 and was terrified so I got it. I had checked in at 4pm and had him at 1am. ❤️ with my second, I started having contractions at home at 10p, 11:15 started spotting so I called our nanny (my dad lives 5 hours away so he was on his way but wouldn’t make it on time). Checked into L&D in pain at 12:50 and was 8cm, had him an hour later! That one was SO FAST and unmedicated obviously lol but I am so happy with both of my experiences which I know isn’t always the case.

Your birthing and postpartum experience sounds so similar to mine. I’m a nurse and my husbands a physician and we had our first baby-also a boy-almost a year ago now (which is crazy). I had an elective induction as well and he came full force into this world. It was the best possible birthing experience I could have hoped for. Motherhood is the absolute best but like you said it also comes with many challenges and learning opportunities along the way. Good luck in your journey! Theo is beautiful!

I think induction is going to grow in popularity. Seeing that its not harmful and comes with so many pros, like planning and knowing if there's a good team available is very reassuring and smart.
There are known risks to the drugs and methods used for induction. I don't say that to argue with you or Dr. Ellis or those who live and die by the ARRIVE trial lol. But for expectant moms who may be reading and considering this, please please discuss risks and your bishop score with your provider. I largely say this because unfortunately my experience with some (not all) physicians is that they do not discuss risks unless asked specifically. Hopefully that changes as patients deserve better.

Oh Dr Sam, if I shared my birth story, I can now tell it with a sort-of humorous spin! I am SO happy to hear yours and thrilled everything played out in a smooth “chill” manner! My daughter is an only child (I am an only child) and “the plan” was to add to our family! Due to SOOO many twists & turns, I knew IF I survived labor (before the delivery part 😆) I was having nothing further to do with adding to our family!!! Almost 20 weeks with my second. I’m hoping to try a trial of labour this time around since last time was an emergency c-section after 30 hours of labour. This time I’m trying to be more go with the flow and I think that having already gone through a c-section and long labour will help with tempering my expectations.

Omg he basically shot out that’s awesome!! Question I know you shared you were seeing a pelvic floor therapist during pregnancy, did that at all help with delivery or PP? I’m 11 mos PP and pushed for 4.5 hrs and 2nd degree tear, I felt more comfortable on my side pushing but they said I was better on my back so here we are weak down there and building back my strength. But we had a healthy 8 lb baby girl that will be 1 next month 😊♥️
The epidural story sounds a lot like my first child’s birth! I was about to take a nap and my doctor wanted to check me before that, and I was at ten centimeters. My son’s birth was wonderful but I felt cheated out of one last nap before baby arrived 🤣

how is blood pressure stabilized after epidural?
Girrrrrl, you didn't miss anything other than a huge mess. My water broke while I was getting up out of bed to pee, and I ran to the toilet before it really made a mess....but it just kept coming out. I had to sit on chucks in my husband's car bc even though I put on a huge maxi pad, it soaked through everything. Not a comfortable feeling to feel liquid coming out every time you move, and not being able to do anything about it. I just had to sit there in my soaked clothing until we finished admissions paperwork!
Besides, my care team told me to come right in to the hospital as soon as possible, even though it was my first child, so there was no waiting at home anyway.

Epidurals are no joke. My daughter was out to her shoulders and I didn’t feel a thing. The nurse was helping me turn to my other side and exclaimed, ‘well, hello there!’ One push and she was out.
My daughter also had a scheduled induction, at 39 weeks. Unfortunately, in 24 hours, she on progressed to 5 cm. She wound up having a C-section. The baby was fine. That's all that matters. Everyone's birthing experience is different.
My 1st pregnancy, I had an epidural, and 15 mins later, out she came. My 2nd daughter, was easy. 10am to the hospital, 10:30 delivery, au naturale.

You're lucky that your mom was allowed in the delivery room. I was not. Only the husband. I would have loved to have been there. There is nothing like having a baby. My daughter went back to work after a 12 week leave, and I watch the baby 2 days a week, and his other grandmom does 3 days. I know how hard it is to leave the baby. You are doing a phenomenal job! Give Theo a kiss for me! ❤👶
Theo is so beautiful. Congratulations!!! I had 2 home births. My biggest fear was that I would call the midwife and that I would have only 4 cm's and that she would leave to come back later and that I already really was in pain. So, I waited and waited before I called. When I finally let her come to our house there was stress. I already had 9-10 cm's and my husband had to assist because the maternity nurse still had to come. She did miss the delivery. The second home birth the same thing happend 🤣🤣. In the Netherlands the maternity nurse comes every day for a couple of hours to help you (4-5 hours). They teach you everything and they change your bedsheets, clean the toilets and bring you food because you are in bed for about a week. They really want you to rest. When there are visitors then she takes care of coffee or tea. The midwife comes almost every day to check on you. And after about a week you're on your own.
The epidural was amazing during my son's birth. Thank goodness I had it because he was stuck resulting in a 4th degree tear. 😳 However, recovery was a breeze.

Final edit: I love this. And your birth sounded so easy. I've seen horror stories where some people got destroyed by an epidural. I'm glad your birth story was great.

It sounds like you had a Precipitous Labor , this happens when moms give birth in less than 3 hours after true labor begins (contractions/cervix dilation and effacement).
I am a nursing student soon to graduate this year. I am currently in my Maternity/ON rotation. And have so much respect for OBGYNs. My cousin is one. I love the specialty and plan on being a labor and Delivery nurse ❤️🙏🏻

Did you know in australia in the public health system, they won't consider an elective induction until you are at least 40 weeks because they don't deem it safe for the baby. Unless of course there is something wrong.
