I live in Surrey and one of the main roads (Guildford Road) was sign posted a 'Road Closed Ahead' for weeks with a diversion set up around a village and back onto the main road further along. I ignored the signs and drove though. There were no road works at all and no cones, just a clear open road. Traffic which had been diverted was emerging from a roundabout further up. Numerous vehicles were ignoring it too. WHY is my question. Are they trying to make car journeys difficult for the sake of it? There are so many road closures when they could easily put in traffic lights.
Be careful what you wish for. A few years ago in my town they resurfaced a 1KM main road in both directions in 48 hours flat in both directions. It was a wonder of engineering with the new surface rolled out like a carpet from preformed tarmac. Within two years the road was like the Somme in 1917 and had to be rebuilt from scratch which took several weeks.
Same in Essex mate. Last Friday it's 2pm I'm trying to come home and one of the major major main roads (that's not only a major road for the town but a major through route) is closed... At 2pm on Friday. So I do a ridiculous long diversion, come to the other end of the road, also closed apparently for "road markings" yet there isn't anybody there at all and this is 2pm on Friday. Absolutely ridiculous and really just unbelievable like to fully close such a major road at that time of the week, and then to make it worse not actually do any work!? You're not alone man 👍
That road is wide enough for them to close the left lane, allow traffic into the centre by driving on the hatchings, allow traffic to leave the centre by travelling in their usual lane. Separate directions with pylons. Stick a 20mph speed limit on it if you have to, but there was absolutely no excuse for them to close the whole road in one direction for what is, let's be honest, a short stretch of work going on on the pavement.
it's all over the country mate... on my street we always have cars parked on the sides and it's always one way traffic regardless. the other day there were a few of these red fences over nothing on the pavement and they flipping put temp lights... one of them was at the exit of our car park...
This, I don't know if it's new health and safety rules or EU regs. But yes nothing more frustrating than a hole no larger than a parked car requiring temp lights.
This shit is everywhere pal.... I remember think it was back in the 1990s when their was a helpline to call if you were getting stressed by motorway cones... off to the caravan to distress from my week at the lunatic asylum now! 😉
its not much better here in Queensland Australia either mate. Brisbane has been an absolute nightmare since they won the Olympics bid years ago. only difference is they use plastic and concrete barriers here. no roadworks one just a kilometer or so down the road from me been that way for weeks. utter madness designed to peas us off i thinks. much love mate

Coming up to their new budget thing is it? I live in Germany but here this usually happens just before they need to put in for the new years amount, so that they get the same or more for the following years time. It is worse though here with speed cameras as every so often when they short of money these things pop up in bushes or the back of normal family cars and all over the place and there is a month of so of tickets being given out left right and centre of everything and then nothing again lol
@@MUSIC4TRUTH.... Yea and there is that I guess as I mean even after they do the changes, the changes are usually either pointless of do not make any sense, making things worse if anything.
Pretending to be doing work when not really doing it so charge the council for the night or fay's work see it every night all over the country cones and nothing getting done just causing mayhem
Could be wrong but I think the big yellow pipe is gas pipe are they laying new or replacing old gas pipes? ask one the workers. Also with the prevalence of No win No fee Insurance schemes and the like on top of the Health and safety paranoia that's another reason for the delays. Then the contractors aren't bothered about delays and inconvenience the longer they can stretch out the job and the less people they can employ to do it, the more they can make from councils who after all aren't spending their own money their spending ours so why should they care either!
I've worked in construction for 35 years, its not stretching the job out at all, just can't find people that will do hard physical graft, THAT IS TRUE !!!!!
@@alanrogers9597 Another reason is the local councils, they actually dictate how long & when you can close a road, the notices are in the local news papers regarding closures of roads & time lengths, companies do get fined considerable amounts of money for running over timescales & not informing the councils of opening notices, I hope this helps, but obviously not when you stuck in traffic or delayed when there appears to be no work being carried out.
Same everywhere. Local authorities are utterly useless. They should be removed from their positions. Completely ridiculous. My route to work. Main route to get to M20. Since November,i would guess 80% of the time there have been various roadworks. Often with nothing happening. Currently there are roadworks just off a roundabout. This stops one exit, yet they have completely coned and traffic light the whole area(New Hythe). They are incompetent!
It's everywhere and so annoying!
I live in Lincoln they have closed 2 main roads in the city centre for 7months
I think all these roadworks are the companies conning all the local councils
How do you think a company cons the local council over roadworks?
@@jonathanlake6053 It's obvious if you think about it. They charge for hours worked when the work isn't being done!!

I suspect it's mainly to keep cars away, but also a money scam probobaly involving councillors and businesses.

All by design, they are trying to make driving so frustrating that we give up on it.
@@eyesodd my thoughts exactly, make it miserable so we won't even want to drive! Disgusting tho..
It seems as if they want to make driving as unpleasant as possible. They want us out of our cars.
